Leonid Yelin announced the promotion of
Derryk Williams to associate head coach. Williams, who joined the Orange staff in 2018, will be responsible for working with all facets of the program, including recruiting, team travel logistics, planning and running practice, game planning and budget oversight.
"He's very enthusiastic and his personality can fire up everyone," said head coach
Leonid Yelin. "He is willing to handle any responsibility, no matter how big or small. He will do everything in his power to improve the program. Derryk is very coachable, he is a fast learner, and he is open-minded. He relates well to the student-athletes and the administration and is always very professional."
During Williams' first season at Syracuse, the Orange earned the program's first NCAA tournament invitation and beat Yale in the first round. Syracuse ranked second nationally in blocks (3.08/set) and was one of two schools to have two players ranked in the top 30 in the country in blocks per set.
Williams began his coaching career at Ithaca College in 2015. During his season on the sidelines at IC, the Bombers won the Empire 8 Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament semifinals. In 2016 he became an assistant coach at Colgate. The Raiders finished with a 36-22 record during his two seasons, and advanced to the Patriot League tournament championship game in 2016 and to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) in 2017.
In 2017, Williams was the assistant coach at Hamilton College while also serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Colgate in 2017. At Hamilton, he helped the program to its highest conference wins total and best seed in the NESCAC Tournament in program history.
A 2015 Ithaca College graduate, Williams played two seasons with the Bombers' men's tennis team before serving as a two-year captain of the club volleyball program. He earned a bachelor's degree in television/radio with a minor in coaching.
