Desko Presser Jan 22 (Vermont and Hofstra Scrimmages)

At about the minute mark Desko says they are going to play “a freshman or two at the defensive end of the field.” That could mean starting close or could mean back up SSDM but very curious as to who he’s talking about.

Clary and Page most likely.

Though J. Kennedy and Hull are RSFR.

Lee I read was injured.

I think those are the only candidates.

I believe Kennedy Jr is hurt as well per IT
I've heard that Clary & Page have been outstanding especially since the break. Both are crazy athletic; however, they're Freshman and will be prone to Freshman mistakes. If our starters can stay healthy it might not be a bad idea to Redshirt them as we lose Mellen, Helmer & Dearth next year. The way the NCAA works if either one of these kids steps on the field for a scrimmage then they'll lose their redshirt

That is good to hear about Clary and Page - I had high hopes for Page but Clary comes as a surprise. And as you said, we will need them next year. Usually I am of the mind that if it is close between players, you should go with the younger one as the reward at end will probably be higher (Desko did this two years ago with Curry and Dordevic). But this year it feels like the Orange might not have the luxury of "grooming" youngsters, and personally I'd feel better if veteran players were seeing the majority of minutes.

I was also under the assumption that they were looking at Rosa and/or Aviles seeing time at SSDM. They would have to leapfrog a couple of guys, so same thing as Clary and Page - is it better just to redshirt?

Expect close to be manned by vets, Helmer will have a pole somewhere but flexibility and options have slimmed somewhat as younger Kennedy out and Lee still sidelined. Staats likely a man down specialist. Present depth likely factors into any redshirt considerations on d . Frosh are athletic and have gotten plenty of practice reps so at least better prepared than the usual if ever needed. Perhaps one redshirts but unlikely both do. Dont believe there is need to formally declare, unsure on whether or not participation in a winter scrimmage counts agaisnt eligibility. SSDM unit is well manned yet Aviles polish has impressed . Expect some rs on O. Story known with mids, opportunities are very few unless rotation is greatly expanded . Attack at least 5 deep

Feel the same about Aviles and Rosa. Aviles played really well against Lehigh this fall. Rosa stood out at the intrasquad game. Both will be major contributors down the road.

interested in assessments of Rosa. I watched some of his Genny games. Was not impressed at all, but I did not see enough to make a educated judgment. Tell me what I missed about him please. Thanks

Rosa is a good player who was hampered by injuries a lot his Jr year and with not much around him his Sr year. Good step down shooter who is a team first guy and plays physical. He's guy that I think can play a similar role to Trimboli but he could also be a good two way middie if SU needed him to play SSDM. He's the kind of a guy who will excel being a secondary option on an offense. I expect him to be a big factor in a few years when the middie roster rolls over. He has already impressed from what I was told.

I think the staff likes both Aviles and Rosa but barring injury there isn't a ton of PT to be had as Ivory pointed out in his post. Aviles as a two way middie to start his career would be very interesting as I think he has the skills to play SSDM for sure. I think Aviles and Rosa's futures are both as midfielders but things have to clear out as they aren't surpassing the guys in front of them. A RS year for at least one would make a lot of sense.

I think Clary and Page both see time this year with a couple of the younger young guys hurt we need the depth unless Lee is close to a return. The 2nd and 3rd guys on close are unclear but there is solid depth in Murphy Staats Dipietro Helmer etc etc. I think a lot depends on what they ultimately do with Kennedy as Helmer moving full time to close puts Kennedy and Fernandez as the clear 1-2 LSM punch and if they bump Kennedy down one of the Frosh will likely backup Fernandez at LSM.
