When I started grad school, our department was really into March Madness and I was in charge of getting some sort of trophy. Mostly as a joke, I wrote to Dick Vitale, asked him for advice, and explained my situation of being on the lowest rung of the ladder and my task at hand. Dick (or somebody) wrote me a nice letter back and sent me a few other things with his autograph and a few notes. I always appreciated that, even though I don't always appreciate... him.

John Wooden, Dean Smith, BE commissioner Gavitt, Coach K, John Thompson, Jim Boehiem, and many more were more important, imo. He had a good shtick but those guys made CBB, broke barriers, and in the case of Gaviitt led the league that made CBB watchable and exciting. I dont think Dickie V. Holds a match to any of them. I think there are better announcers, Bill Raferty is one (though I’m sure others disagree)

Like a lot of folks, I was not an ideal son in my early- to mid-teenage years.

No matter how how differently we saw the world though, my dad and I could always connect on 'Cuse/college hoops and weeknight college football games. For that, I will be forever grateful to DV, JB, and MACtion (or whatever the equivalent was back in the day).
