From the St. Paul Pioneer Press on April 3 (free access - mods feel free to edit if needed):
Charley Walters: Brian Dutcher praises Gophers’ hiring of Ben Johnson

Dutcher, who has coached San Diego State to a 53-7 record the past two seasons, was among those who Gophers athletics director Mark Coyle contacted about the job that went to Ben Johnson.

Dutcher, reached by the Pioneer Press last week, said Coyle made a “great” hire in Johnson. Dutcher, 61, a Bloomington Jefferson grad, last year signed a guaranteed $7.8 million, six-year contract with San Diego State with a buyout of $6.925 million. But he required that the buyout would be just $1 million if he were to be hired by the Gophers. San Diego State obliged.

“I had a clause in my contract because it pulls at the heartstrings — it’s where my dad (Jim) coached (Gophers’ last Big Ten championship in 1982). It’s where I went to school, my wife went to school, where my three sisters went to school,” Dutcher said. “So, you know.”

Dutcher said Coyle “couldn’t have been any nicer” in expressing interest. “Mark called me … during the first round of the (NCAA) tournament and said, ‘I’d like to talk to you about the job if you’re interested. I don’t want to bother you during the tournament, and when the tournament’s over, I’ll reach back out to you,’ ” Dutcher said.

Dutcher said fine and that he would “love” to hear what Coyle had to say.

San Diego State lost to Syracuse 78-62 on the first Friday of the tournament, ending a 14-game winning streak. Coyle then telephoned Dutcher, who was back in San Diego on Saturday, and asked whether Dutcher would be interested in interviewing in front of a committee or with just Coyle, whichever would be most comfortable.

Dutcher told Coyle he would be happy to do whatever was best for Coyle, but that he wanted a couple of days at home in San Diego.
On Monday, Dutcher received a voicemail saying Minnesota had “gone down the road with someone else and found their guy,” Dutcher said.

“That’s when they hired Ben. I loved it. I heard Ben blew the (committee) away, did a great job, which is not surprising. I think it’s a great hire. He’s a great young coach that obviously loves the
school, loves the city, and I think he’ll do an outstanding job there.”

If I'm reading between the lines here, I'm guessing that Minn wanted the younger coach. And the 61 year old coach has no problem toughing it out in San Diego.

Here in Minnesota, some Gopher fans are very upset with AD Mark Coyle for not interviewing Dutcher since he is a proven winner.

Instead Coyle hired someone with no head coaching experience but has a local connection since Johnson played at MN and hopefully can keep the MN recruits from leaving to play elsewhere.

Also, MN was under intense pressure by the other bigger local newspaper to hire a black head coach since they have no minorities in any high levels.

Seemed like a Coyle kind of move, honestly.

"Hey, guy with a special carve out in your contract who has a billion ties to the school is super qualified and has heartstrings attached to the school... Want to interview? JK, we hire someone else"

Yep. vast majority of gopher hoops fans not happy with the hire. Johnson could end up being good but he'll be learning on the job - crazy hard to do in a league like the b1g

I have ties to the SDSU athletic program. It would have taken a lot to pry Dutcher out of his position at State. He has been at SDSU for a long time and his family loves San Diego. If I was the MN AD, I would shy away from hiring a 61 year old head coach with no recent ties to the Midwest. It may have been a great fit 7 years ago, but I don't think either party was sold on the current situation. Dutcher is paid well and I am sure he will enjoy the San Diego "winters" more than Minnesota.

Seems weird that Coyle wouldn't give him a couple of days back home to decompress after the season, but I guess he took it as a sign that he wasn't interested.

I guess I can understand since I'm from the mindset that no one moves from San Diego to somewhere like Minnesota or Syracuse. Wait.

You don't hire or not hire a guy based on one game. Plus sdsu.is a better job and place to live.

The idea that one game should swing a head coaching decision is kind of silly.
I completely agree.
However, Coyle requested an interview, received lots of interest and then told Dutcher that he decided to hire someone else (who was not attracting interest from another other college at the time) without waiting a few days to interview Dutcher. Strange set of events.

I should mention rumors of a lack of money (due to COVID) for a new coach hire too. Although that doesn't seem possible at a B1G school, MN did recently cut a few sports to save money that Coyle has been ripped for and it wouldn't look good to pay big time money on a new coach after cutting several sports to save far less money.

You'd have to be a moron to leave a job like SDSU for Minny.

Minny is a bad job its Northwestern with a fanbase that isn't much better in terms of fan support but has high expectations. And they care more about hockey.

I mean the origional Mark Few Dan Monson parlayed his Zags success into the Minny job and has been stuck in the Big West since.

Dutcher is filling pretty big shoes in Steve Fisher there but has met expectations.

Frankly SDSU is a better situation. Who wants to compete for 5th place in the B1G? And that would be in a good year for Minnesota.

I live in SD and its a great place to be. However, for basketball it should be considered that 8th place for Minny in the Big Ten gets you in the tourney. SDSU has to pretty much win the league and conf tourney every year to get a bid. Also, historically SDSU almost always has to travel to get a good non league game, few teams will play at Viejas Arena ( I wish Cuse would)

Not surprised Coyle acted quick. He himself only stay at his "dream job" as long as a pregnancy period.

Spoken like a guy who realizes at 61, Making over $1M a year coaching in San Diego isn't too shabby. He can grab 3 and 4 star Cali kids and win the MWC more years than not

And as someone who grew up on a farm spending hours doing barn chores.. I would far rather play 15 mins from the beach than in barn surrounded by frozen tundra half a year... But that is just me

If you schedule tough in the ooc like they usually do you don't have to win the mw to get a bid.
