ACC extension shows ESPN's shrewd control over competition and expansion

Currently ACC schools get about $13 million a year but as CBS pointed out, there is also an increase in travel budget as the league expands. More importantly, barring further expansion or something unforeseen, the ACC is about tapped out in terms of television monetization and are locked into their current deal until 2026, fourteen years from now. To put that in perspective, 14 years ago Roger Maris still held the single season Home Run record and Bill Clinton was giving us a very finite explanation of what constituted as sex.

What makes it worse for the ACC is that generally speaking the short term and long term outlook for sports media rights and in particular college sports rights are very bullish with Fox and NBC ready to pounce on anything ESPN doesn't retain. Unlike the Pac 12 and the Big Ten, who have or will soon have their own networks, the ACC won't have another avenue to raise their television revenue. The Big Ten and Pac 12 have shrewdly allowed themselves the opportunity to control their own destiny as their networks can ramp up carriage fees, distribution, and advertising revenue over time.

So in otherwords, instead of hitting a home run the ACC is getting screwed?

I wonder what events in the contract trigger a renegotiation for the ACC. Similar to when Cuse and Pitt joined.

And just imagine how the Big East feels.

this is why sports writers shouldn't write about this stuff.

anyone who enters a long contract runs the risk of missing out on being able to get a better deal later but they reduce the risk of getting a worse deal later.

this guy thinks that espn signing a long deal is shrewd because he assumes that the ACC didn't get more up front than they otherwise would have.

he just assumes a long deal is shrewd for espn and not shrewd for the acc.

The only raw deal the ACC got was missing out on Rutgers. They will be the Alabama of the NE.

ACC =BE gets $ in 2012-13.

Use that as benchmark to add 25% ?

Add more teams - it lets them renegotiate again.

You assume that adding more teams won't dilute their product. There's no guarantee that adding more teams means more money for everyone. With losing SU and Pitt, imagine the Big East getting less per team than it's getting now.

NBC and Fox need programming. New BE is NFL model of 12 am starts in every time zone.
(It follows AFL cities in an uncanny way cept Buffalo and Patriots. (Buffalo and UMass down the line?))

TV sets all that matter and new BE has many.

Let bet a drink at a Cuse FB game in 2013 that BE gets paid well.(more than last time)

Lets bet a drink that the ACC per team deal is better than the BE deal and then lets bet another drink that the BE per team deal will be less than the one the BE turned down last summer.

Yes.

I can't bet on the chance that the Big East adds Tulsa, Southern Miss, and Greensboro School of Barbers.

If the ACC feels they are getting screwed they can go to arbitration.

? You see above comment was concerning : BE getting worse deal then current deal.

the acc big wigs dont come across as blind as the big east ones-
i doubt they painted themselves into a corner contract wise -

lets be grateful they didnt hire a commish as smart as forest gump-

Dear 2013 BE Members:

TV contracts are like a box of chocolates...and ours is like the box of baker's chocolates with the nuts that looks cool but tastes like crap.

Sincerely,

John M.

The contract has inflation factors built in. But the deal won't go the 14 years or whatever because it incents the ACC to expand again eventually so that they can renegotiate. At some number of years down the road, the ACC will expand to 16 to increase their deal payout.

Ultimately, as an Orange fan, all I truly care about is that going to the ACC is a huge windfall for Syracuse. Don't really care that it's only a meager increase for those teams already in the league except if said amount encourages FSU to look elsewhere.

Cheers,
Neil

based on contract as indicated maybe 'Cuse should back out of leaving the BE...:rolling:
