Dino’s preference in terms of QB

ED was an outside running threat that LB's had to respect and not pinch in and helped hide a lot of OL flaws which are being exposed quite frequently this year. I have no doubt TD would be more confident in the pocket if he had time and would scan the field better and not stare as much as his #1 as he has been.

To me what hurts TD is his lack of moving and throwing accurately and with this line that is definitely not going to cut it. The Pitt QB won the SU game by moving out of pocket and hitting receivers on the sideline for first downs. SU will never be like Bama, Oklahoma or Ohio State and have a QB back there who can look for receivers for 5 seconds as almost all teams can't other than a select few.

Plus let me add I am not a huge fan of these WR's. Is it possible that TD is too cautious and won't let them win 50/50 balls? Maybe. I have no clue what TD is told to do and if he is just doing what he is told.

Its much easier to win in college with a dual threat QB. Other than the elite teams dual threat QBs are a great equalizer.
There is zero doubt that we would be at 500 or better with Eric this year.

I agree and I don’t want to keep using the “if we had Eric” thing because every college has to move on from their greats. It’s more that if we had chance amie who knows what difference it would have made. Again, I really am not trying to bash Tommy because if he had an elite OL then watch out he is deadly. Unfortunately I think for us to thrive we need a true DT qb who makes LBs hesitate, who makes RPOs actually effective because the defense does have to worry about a QB scamper. The truth is, we probably won’t ever have a top 3-4 line in the ACC year in and year out, so having a mobile QB who can make passes on the run and flush out the pocket and deliver a ball with accuracy is necessary. I have a feeling we will be seeing a DT QB commit in this class.

Get a fullback/halfback that doesn't get hand tackled at the LOS. He may not bust big plays but will move the chains and give the QB a better situation to deal with on 2nd and 3rd downs. A guy that's quick and powerful that makes good fast reads. I thought Joe Benedict could have done that job well.

If your going to have a pocket passer you better have a good oline. That's where dino went wrong.
100%. I’m on the side of being realistic where we probably won’t have a great OL always and should hedge our bets with a DT QB.

Regardless of what style if QB we have, penalties have been killing the team as well.

Lincoln Riley seems to like dual threat qb's. He took Jalen Hurts from a guy that wasn't considered a great passer to someone that is near the top of the country in every passing stat. I get it, he has all the pieces around him, but if the purest pocket passers are what's best for a passing attack, why is that Oklahoma has yet to have one under Riley? They, moreso than us, should have the oline and and skill position players to lean toward a pocket passer.

I think our offense can work with either kind of qb, but it seems like we should be able scheme a decent passing dual threat qb into good passing stats easier than we can teach a pocket guy how make defenses account for him on the ground.

Dungey's greatest contributions last season were in the redzone. He covered up a ton of inefficiency there (that and Szymt being out of this world good).

Briles' offenses were more run first than Dino's and i think he positioned the wide receivers out further, but it seemed he placed an emphasis on big strong QBs that could move. I think accuracy was a secondary consideration. I think Amie fit the bill, but i'm not sure he was truly the dual threat type some seem to be thirsting for.

I think Tommy is going to be fine long term. These are my observations of him so far (some admittedly, are more conjecture than others):
  • He has elite arm talent. Other than Lawrence, no QB we have played can spin it like he can;
  • He is a good athlete with good straight line speed, but not a lot of wiggle;
  • He has little feel for the game and really struggles with a dirty pocket. This is unfortunate because he almost never has a clean pocket. (Frankly, in college, D lines tend to be way ahead of o lines, and being in long yardage must pass situations only exacerbates things). I remember him not having a great senior year at Don Bosco and part of the excuse/reason was that his team played a very difficult schedule and he was always under duress;
  • Ryan Nassib had terrible pocket presence until his senior year with nearly no ability to buy time within the pocket. This gives me hope Devito can improve;
  • He's very slight. He doesnt have broad shoulders or hips. I dont care how weight room strong he is; he goes down on contact very easily. Hell, he's gone down 3 or 4 times after having been contacted 3-4 yards earlier (like grazed);
  • He plays like a lab rat qb. In other words, all the private coaching is evident, but he's missing the feel/ability to freestyle that all of Syracuse's best qbs have had.

This is pretty fair, IMO.

I think the solution to a lot of it is:

1. a better OL
2. expereince

Unfortunately, for this season - results won't get better, but the OL can keep improving and experience will be available for those who want it.
