Dino and the new La Familia

Just my opinion. There is no way Beck and Long are in control of shaping the staff. That would be cutting Dino off at the knees. If he doesn’t have full authority to hire his own staff he may as well get a head start to the unemployment line.
Again, just my opinion. Not to discredit anything your friend has stated.
He tried that and we had 1 good year.

I agree with that. And maybe Dino has asked for their input on new hires. I just don’t think the head coach gives autonomy to his coordinators to hire staff. If anything it’s a collective effort as it should be. But ultimately Dino makes the final say.
In the corporate world as the CEO, you might sign off on a hire within a certain department, but I can promise you that if my COO wants to hire someone for an open position, I can't remember a time the hire wasn't approved. Same with Tech, HR, Accounting any other direct hire. The individuals that were held responsible for the performance of their department made the hiring decisions.

+1 to this. If I have had open headcount it was up to me to hire someone and my manager wasn’t even a part of the interview process. And I am nowhere near c-suite.

Trust me. Rocky isnt deferring to Dino on who he wants to hire. Ok hes going to pass it by him but for the most part this is Rockys hire.
Beck because hes new maybe Dino is more involved but not much.
If anything Dino might ask his coordinators to interview someone but he sure as heck isn't dictating who they hire.

from and X’s and O’s Viewpoint that makes a lot of sense.

From a recruiting viewpoint not so sure. Dino has been here almost 8 years now, I would hope he knows what works what doesn’t on the recruiting front. The two coordinators have been here 1 year COMBINED. Not sure I would leave 2-3 defensive hires solely up to a 72 year guy from New Mexico for recruiting purposes only I’m saying here. Hopefully they can recruit the portal!

then again, maybe just flip it on it’s head, it’s not like we have a ton of success the last 20 years at any level.

Agree. These are crucial hires for Dino.

We have needed to upgrade our recruiting since he arrived.

We have lost some good recruiters and they need to be replaced. Rocky’s system has been in place for a couple of years. The players know it well. The remaining defensive staff know it well. It isn’t important to bring in some guys Rocky has worked with in the past to fill out the defensive staff. We have people who know it.

The priority has to be getting good recruiters who have contacts in our prime recruiting areas. We have a chance to upgrade recruiting substantially when Schmidt was replaced and didn’t really do it. Hoping Farmer might be able to leverage his connections in Texas and Oklahoma to get us a couple of players from those areas but it is unlikely. If we are lucky, maybe we can get a OL transfer or two from Tulsa or Texas Tech that liked him and want to play for him. But he is unlikely to make a big impact receruiting.

So Dino has to be strategic with his hires. I think we really need someone who has recruited NJ/NYC extensively for years to fill out of the spots. And someone who has recruited Florida for years to fill another spot.

Rocky is not going to help here. He should be part of the Interview process for the defensive coach(es) we hire but he can’t be the guy making the calls here. The same applies to Jason Beck,

I don't know this for sure but looking at his Twitter we may have a new Special Teams Coordinator and TE Coach.

He was the Special Teams Quality Control on the directory before and has been on staff since September 2022.

Does that mean Liggy is gone?

Great find. So coupling ST and TE and he was quality control before that. Might it be fair to guess that would be a lower dollar investment therefore allowing a much larger dollar investment for a "recruiter" coach maybe?
So that leaves Safety, LBs and maybe Corners if Chip departs?

Don't get ahead of things. This is just a Twitter bio...who knows.

I would love to see one coach take Secondary as a whole and one coach take LB so Rocky Long doesn't have to coach a position. Only needs to game plan etc.

Don't get ahead? Where's the fun in that CL? ;) I kid, I kid. Yeah nothing is official until it's official.

Or maybe just hire nobody and save those funds for NIL. It’s about the bag as much as the coach.

Dino hired Martin Gilbert and others who couldnt find a hs in Jersey with a tour guide.

FWIW:

Will Rodriguez was involved in contacting Jack Stonehouse, and recruited Stonehouse when he was at UCLA.

"It was coach Will Rodriquez and he reached out," Stonehouse said.

Rodriguez was Assistant Coach (Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends) at Azusa Pacific.

Rodriguez brings over a decade of NFL experience to the collegiate level after serving 11 years with the Los Angeles Rams, including the last six as special teams analyst. With the Rams, he worked under John Fassel, assisting one of the most creative minds in the pro game for a special teams unit which consistently ranks among the top teams in the NFL in special teams.

During his time with the Rams, Rodriguez worked alongside Fassel to re-tool the kicking game with Pro Bowlers Greg Zuerlein, a kicker who played at the Division II level collegiately with Missouri Western, and four-time Pro Bowl punter Johnny Hekker out of Oregon State. In 2016, the Rams special teams unit set NFL records for punts downed inside the 20 (51) and single-season net punting average (46.0).

In his personnel role, Rodriguez scouted college football’s kick coverage players, while also grading all top specialists and returners.

Agree with this. I’m still not quite sure Dino understands the Northeast or refuses to. We continue to go to his well, which often means coaches from out west/texas, etc. I don’t care how good you “coach ‘em up”, we need the raw materials. That means getting better players, period. And that means understanding and mining our recruiting base.

I was encouraged this year when it looked like things were picking up in NJ/PA, but I don’t think we’ve seen real results there. For SU to really scratch our way back, we need to somehow reignite our NJ/PA chops with NYC Metro & Fla thrown in.

You can take the Dino out of the west but you cant take the West out of the Dino.

It should be noted that Dino hired Chip West with one of his more recent hires. We were getting nothing out of Virginia and Dino realized this and acted on it, hiring a guy with a reputation for having very good contacts in that state.

I think he better understands today that a good staff contains a mix of top development coaches and top recruiter coaches. And I think he knows he needs to get help to recruit Florida and the metro NYC/NJ areas.

Let’s see what happens. I have cautious optimism we are going to like what he does here.

You don't think you can win 6-8 games a year because a bunch of goof balls on the internet with alterior motives don't rate our classes high enough? I don't think if we are ranked 38th versus 57th there is much of a difference due to someones opinion outside the program. I think the portal has basically rendered HS recruiting as only part of the equation as well.

If Beck has a great season we will most like go to a bowl and Dino gets an extension and Beck moves on to bigger and better at some point I don't understand why many feel like Dino could get fired and then Beck would be hired as the next HC?, most internal hires are because the HC moves on to bigger and better. I highly doubt Rocky's defense will be the reason we don't win next year either. I just don't see this happening unless Dino retires in 3-4 years and does some TV which he would be great at but that's a lifetime in the coaching profession

Like Wisconsin thinking their DC would replace their fired coach? Very rare
Preach, Miami is a perennial top 10 recruiting rank and are garbage year after year!

I think at this point, we can all just agree that Dino doesn't view regional recruiting or the idea of pipelines as a priority.

There were 39 players on the 2022 bowl season from NY, PA, NJ, MA, CT and adding Canada. We also just added what you could argue were the two best graduating recruits from NY in Perry and Goddard and TE Clement who is supposed to be very athletic.

I hope so Tom. Something about the definition of insanity that doesn't make me comfortable:)
