Dino Babers was always willing to change defenses. Does he now take a look at Navy for answers?

Interesting read. Some serious connection with Dino there.

Not saying this is a bad hire as I bet it would be a solid improvement. The connection makes sense and he is a D.C. guy for recruiting. But, I mean I think we should be aiming for the moon here. Hiring a well known name and paying him correctly would go a long way to show the fan base that we are trying to play with the big dogs. I feel this hire would not go over well with the fan base initially. I am not sure how I feel about this. It’s like a hire that would have made sense when Babers initially showed up here. Anyone agree?

Disagree. There are maybe a dozen established good DCs in all. Most are making a ton of money at a football factory. We aren’t getting any of those guys. We need an up and coming guy and a guy with new ideas to play today’s Os. The 4-3 ineffective for a school like SU. Newberry seems like a guy we should get. Bring him and Dino’s buddy on.

Fair enough. Who is this Newberry you speak of? When you refer to Dino’s buddy you mean Norwood the DC from Navy correct?

our base defense is a 4-2-5.

Didn't Ward start playing more 4-3 base last year after the Pitt loss last year when we were run all over?

don’t remember. Do know every depth chart released is a 4-2-5 and that what we start in.

That article didn't make me think we were getting Newberry, rather we'd be getting Norwood and he'd likely be installing the defense here that the article credits to Newberry.

I don't think so. He did against BC, which is why you saw Jones so much.

But this year we have 5 DBs on the field more often that not. Two corners, two safeties and either Trill or Stritz.

We need someone who coaches an aggressive style of defense and has been successful doing it. Add in his connections to the DC area, seems like a great choice. I don’t want a glamor hire so to speak even if we could afford it, you don’t hire someone to appease the fan base, you hire someone who can help you win and then the fan base will be appeased

So the article makes is sound like Norwood has learned the system from Newberry. It seems like we should go after Newberry rather than Norwood, if we end up looking in that direction. It's not like we'd be taking the understudy of the established guy at a factory like Clemson. Going from Navy to Syracuse should be viewed as a step up for which one is more established in the system.
