Just my opinion: Perhaps this is semantics, but I think the primary objective for Syracuse football and new HC Dino Babers should be to rise to the top of Eastern Football. If we can be at the top or near the top of that grouping – which includes BC, Pitt, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, Temple, UConn and even West Virginia – I think that our program can elevate itself with time and a dose of consistency.

This would solidify our identity: Syracuse plays football that is fast, fun and modern. In essence, we’d become an attractive and viable subset within the Atlantic Coast Conference, as opposed to a northern ACC outpost that is best known as a basketball school.

Installing Dino’s offense is a great start toward this end because it will differentiate us from the Eastern pack, which is (with the exception of WVU) run heavy and defensively oriented. I just think it is a bit early to focus on winning the ACC or the Atlantic or catching Clemson/FSU. Perhaps someday soon that can be the case, but not right now. Our best strategy should be to standout in our own neighborhood first.

Maybe this is the Wegmans philosophy? Thrive in your region and don’t get too greedy. By doing this, they’ve become one of the most admired companies in our country.

This philosophy does not prohibit Dino and Co. from trying to win every game or recruit in any region of the country. It simply provides a reasonable roadmap and sets attainable goals for the next 4-6 years.

Good post. Dino, his offense, the Dome all set us apart from the defensive-minded, run the football in the mud local competition. Where we really have the advantage of difference is in the Northeast and that's where we need to push it the most.

I agree with everything here.

Maybe if we get real good we can win the Lambert trophy again.

And, as I have pointed out a few times lately, Eastern football is down right now. Pitt (for one season at least) is an exception and WVU is doing alright, but they hate the B12 geography.

But the others are all struggling for one reason or another: BC (terrible offense), Penn State (Franklin stinks as a HC, 2nd-tier status in B1G East), UConn (nice season, HC is a nerd, AAC status), Maryland (financial issues, 3rd-tier status in B1G East, new defensive HC), Rutgers (we have a thread with nearly 3,000 entries that chronicles their issues).

Now some of these programs will rise, some will fall off or sink further. This is not a static situation. But, honestly, I like SU's potential more than most. We just have to be strategic and smart. We seem to have some strong leaders in place (Kent, Coyle, Dino) to navigate and that is HUGE.

To standout among Eastern Football programs is reasonable and it's been done here at SU before. It's just not easy process and it'll take some time.

I'm done with artificial ceilings on what we can be. Rolling with Dino and "Why not Syracuse?"
I do hear what you're saying, and agree in principle. That said, my post laid no such limits. I only suggested a reasonable program goal for the initial 4-6 years. If program success is to be had at SU, more than likely it will be measured regionally. If it goes beyond, well fantastic. I just think "my" milepost (regional power) gives SU the best shot at crashing your "endgame" (the national scene).

Makes sense. I probably over reacted to your post! I just get tired of the capping the program at some arbitrary number of wins or recruiting ranking.

I think Babers will shoot for the best and we'll take our spot regionally - near the top.

If SU wins 5-6 Games next year it will be a successful season
We really should have won a couple of the Games we lost this season. I think 6 wins and a bowl game is a reasonable expectation and I would be thrilled if we did better than this.

We're seeing what consistency can get you in what Ferentz is doing at Iowa.

  1. Anyone who let Cincinnati, Miami, and Louisville 'compete' for the Lambert trophy should have their heads examined. VT too, for that matter
  2. Anyone who created this chart should know how to spell 'Cincinatti' ;)

On one hand we are competing with these teams for recruits based on proximity alone but also with the ACC teams down the east coast. Competition landscape has changed drastically over the years with teams historical rivals playing in different conferences.

Was just about to respond the same way. The Lambert Trophy has become a joke. If it's about Northeast football, then keep it among northeast teams. Allowing Miami, Lousivlle, VT and Cincy in is absurd. At a time when they should have been using the trophy to lend more attention to Northeast teams, they contributed to the further dilution of the region. Just dumb.

Pretty sure teams qualified if they played something like 55% of their schedule against the Northeast.
