Dino on Packer & Durham: 8:30 Wed

Ain’t no Mountain High Enough? Who are you kidding Dino, we all know it would be “We are Family”.
Ain't No Mountain High Enough is the greatest American song ever made ...and there have been a lot of American songs made

I think Dino realizes how fortunate he is and is committed to taking advantage of a second chance to get it right.

Obviously Dino looks like he's just in a different place compared to the end of the season - he looked like he had shell shock in November. I'm really glad JW got behind him and delivered the cavalry - can't wait until the season!

Dino is one lucky guy. There are very few if any schools that would retain a coach making that much money with only one winning season out of 6. I believe the combination of the buyout, covid, Tucker, and the fact that Dino is well liked by the team and community saved his job. At this point baring a complete collapse i think he has two more years. What is going to be interesting is what happens if Dino is successful. Will he reciprocate or will he move on. The good news is that the current staff might have two possibly three guys who are head coaching material. JW made some excellent moves in a very tough spot.

Agreed, was a great interview with Dino and he always does well with those two who obviously really like Dino. I think Dino would have to string a few good seasons together to make him a viable candidate somewhere else and I do agree there are 2 guys that are probably future HC candidates on this team.

If that did happen ( success) Dino would be what early 60's? two bowl games in a row would probably secure his job pretty close to retirement and wish I was kidding. I think Dino is well liked by the people that matter and that saved his job. Hey, I like Dino too and glad he is still the coach considering how the past 2 months have gone.

My expectations are limited but I do think Dino gets two more years barring some disaster. I think it's safe to say that beck and Anae probably have 2 year deals or they wouldn't be here

I don't know why you worry so much about Dino moving on. Based on his body of work, I don't think anyone is grabbing him so fast to be a HC. If he's so good the next few years that teams start to want him, I'll be thrilled, but I don't see him running off anywhere at this point in his career.

Yep would be a good problem to have and it would take more than just one good year as we have seen that drill before

1. If his record was evaluated by w/l with no context by our AD, it would mean we have a bad AD
2. They have a good relationship
3. The lack of crazy boosters who treat our program like their own sandbox is a double edge sword - and on the good side of the ledger is “less pressure to fire a HC for dumb reasons”
4. A P5 AD who sticks with their HC and is actively supporting him - is a very good way of attracting better candidates if you need to look in the future
5. There are not a lot of guys who’ve done what Dino’s done here (10 win season, Heisman candidate, a win over #2 team) while being a good ambassador for the program and running a relatively scandal free 7 years

Again, ACC and Commish enforced this on all schools. I love it. Time to act like a big boy league (and in Syracuse's case, a big boy program)

If you notice Dino's response to Durham's comment on the Spring game (at the end of the interview), a bemused Dino says something like, "I'm glad we can do this for the ACC"
I’m a I don’t get the spring game guy. Would love to see where in the charter the commish get to dictate how to run a school’s off-season. Not saying it’s not there.

I love the Spring game, and have been almost every year. It doesn’t even have to be an actual game as far as I’m concerned, though that helps a lot. To me it’s more about just seeing who the new players are, and getting a little football fix in the Spring. It’s always more enjoyable if there’s actually a contest of some sort created, more than just catching punts or signing autographs. (My autograph seeking days are well behind me.)

I really hope we can put on a good show for the ACCN. And yes, I will be there.

It’s called exposure and the ACC Network. If you want more TV income you need additional content. The new commissioner wants more football content.

I’ve never been, how does seating work? I read that it’s free so I’m assuming folks can just sit wherever they wish?

The Dome folks always have some seats marked as available for purchase as season tix. So some people can scout out seats or sections they like and initiate their purchase. Other than that it’s usually sit wherever you like, though usually the upper deck is closed off.

There is almost always a SyracuseFan section - typically on the visitor side between the 40 and 50. I’m sure someone here will post about it. I typically try to avoid that group because the drinking and cursing is out of control, and it’s difficult to focus on the game while watching Tomcat taking furious notes.

Pre-portal, there weren’t new players

I winning season out of 6. Do you honestly think that if Dinos contract had expired after last season JW would have offered him a new contract? Lets be honest.
Dinos still here because of economic reasons.

That’s a different nuance to the equation. He’d have to be wiling to re-up him.

The extension after 2018 made sense. Not firing him after shepherding the program through COVID made sense.

We don’t need to deal in hypotheticals. He had two years left and for all the reasons I mentioned in addition to financial, he’s still our coach. Unless you’re ADJW you don’t know the breakdown of what % was financial vs trust or relationship. It’s likely a bit of everything.

Well put. Hindsight being what it is the off season results have been been excellent. Our top coaches have stayed, the new coaches are a major upgrade. We added some very talented players in critical areas and Dino seems energized.
We are heading into Spring ball in as good a shape as in any year of Dinos tenure.
Im treating this as year 1 of 2 and believe that we are finally on a good path.

I went a couple times and thought it was great. It's an opportunity for fans to see things closer than most typically can. One year I went was when fans could go on the field afterward and mingle/get autographs with the players. It's how I have a football with Freeney's, Reyes's, Ferri's, etc. autographs.

Tomcat doesn't take notes: he is amazing...he'll hold a conversation with you the whole game, yell at opposing coaches and yet spits out "War and Peace" at 5:30 am for our reading pleasure.

Yeah there were. Players that redshirted in the fall played in the following Spring Game. There was no play 4 games and redshirt rule like there has been the last few years.

How fun was it watching the game in the spring of '95?

If I have my years correct that game was a blast for a spring game. If I remember correctly Kevin Johnson played QB for some of the game and he was pretty impressive - but he wasn’t going to beat out McNabb.
