Stephen Bailey:
Syracuse HC Dino Babers starting his Week 1 presser. Gives his best to former Ohio coach Frank Solich, “a walking book of knowledge.”
Babers said QB Tommy DeVito got better during fall camp. “I think the big thing is just his pocket presence, knowing where people are.” Also said getting rid of the ball quickly.
No OL specifics from Babers, but said the feel is certainly different this year compared to last. Freshman Kalan Ellis has done well to position himself as a key reserve.
Babers on Ohio’s run game: “They remind me of old Nebraska without the option.” Early test for SU’s front six.
Babers on Ben Labrosse and Jason Simmons: “I think they’re both going to play before all is said and done.”
Babers on starting a freshman punter in James Williams. “There’s nothing spookier than a freshman in his first game.”
Babers said DT McKinley Williams hasn’t been cleared yet. He has confidence in the d-line going into Ohio whether “Bear” is ready or not.
Babers is asked about conditioning of Dakota Davis and McKinley Williams. “We’ve been doing some special stuff with them.” Said the curve is steeper for OL since they don’t rotate normally.
