Dino's Game 6 Press Conference for Clemson

Babers on how he assesses his team aside from wins and losses: "The biggest thing is we want to make sure they're still improving."

On leadership moving forward: "There's a certain standard everyone needs to catch up to. We can't lower our standards."

Babers said he had a "big meeting" with the senior class the other day.

Babers asked whether recruiting efforts are a factor in lack of depth this year: "We make evaluations and hopefully we're evaluating correctly. And based off those evaluations, there's personal development that goes on." Said SU needs to develop guys to compete w/ top of ACC.

Babers on being historically large underdog vs. Clemson: "You get an opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the country, whether you're injured or not and whether you're playing with all seniors or freshmen. No one expects you to win."

Babers asked about young QBs' developing: "We're trying to get Rex ready. We're trying to get Rex caught up." Babers said he saw "dear in the headlights look" from freshman QBs getting their initial team reps last week. "I'm not in a hurry to throw my little brother out there."

Babers: "There's a certain type of fight you want to see in your team. ... We need to make sure that we're fighting the right way and that we're fighting the good fight."

Babers on trend of SU OL injuries: "I think some of that is supreme being stuff. The original injuries were a lot more concussional and things like that. That hasn't been the case (now). We had some guys DQ'd from that, but this recent batch of injuries is random phenomena."

Babers said his meeting with seniors was about making the most of this year. He doesn't want to see chances go by the wayside as the team grapples with a brutal start to the season. Babers hasn't talked much about seniors potentially returning. "A lot of that goes unspoken."

Babers on the injuries coming from the lack of practice time in 2020: "You can attribute a lot of the things happening to what's been happening in 2020. You get back to the main fundamentals, tackling, breaking tackles, etc. No doubt 2020 has been a different year."

Babers on playing Clemson every year: "I think it's fortunate for us that every year we get an opportunity to play them. I don't look at that as something that's bad. I look at that as something that's good. ... We enjoy challenges like that."

Babers said WR Taj Harris apologized to the team for his behavior vs. Liberty during a meeting Sunday. There was "internal discipline," though it's unclear if his status is affected for Clemson. "A young man making a mistake. We all understand."

Babers on freshman RB Sean Tucker, who is playing through injury: "Sean is a go-daddy. He wants to go all the time." Babers reiterates that he won't put players in dangerous situations. Tucker came off hobbling early vs. Liberty, but went on to run for 100+ yards.

Babers said RB Cooper Lutz has "really been coming on" in practice the last three weeks. He blocked well against Liberty and, seemingly, could earn consistent reps going forward.

Babers on how he's handled the 1-4 start personally: "I am really trying to stay mentally, physically and spiritually sharp because I think there's going to be nothing but good coming out of this."

More Babers: "I know there are better days to come and I hopefully I'm here to see all of it."

I agree and true Frosh with deer in headlights look also discourages me. We aren't that multiple that kids should be at sea.

Freshman didn't have a Summer to get their feet wet. They're getting tossed into the fire yet this board thinks they should be under center. This was expected of them. They need some time to acclimate to the speed of the college game while understanding the playbook. Throwing them out there will destroy whatever confidence they have.

Its more the failure to produce a good second option since 2018 thats put us in this situation where it’s reasonable to want to see a new face under center. It may be beneficial for the team in the long term to give someone besides Rex a few possessions.

I'd let Rex ride it out and if there are blowouts (which I'm expecting), you then see what they can do. It's a moot point at this juncture. We knew what could and would happen if Tommy got hurt. Since Ryan Nassib, Syracuse hasn't had a durable QB for a variety of reasons.

Kids make mistakes but with Taj it is repeated mistakes. And those should have consequences. Hopefully he will be disciplined with more than just a talking to.
“A young man making a mistake” ? Dino could have said that about every game last year the way Taj showed up Tommy.

It’s obvious he needs a talking to and needs a leader to set him straight. Is that leader Dino? I hope so. If Taj starts Saturday I guess not.

On the recruiting question asked relative to consistently finishing in the bottom half of the ACC ranking wise. Just more of the same garb about how those rankings don't really matter and that it's simply fun for the fans and off season stuff, etc. Perhaps, Dino hasn't ever heard of the word outlier in relation to the Jimmy G "zero star" ranking, etc. in his repeated weak attempts to prove that argument. There is and always will be exceptions to the rule, but recruiting rankings indeed generally matter. Interesting how we typically rank at the bottom of the league in that regard and it's also where SU has mostly finished as well. This is no coincidence. Funny thing also about those 4 & 5 star/higher ranked guys...their development also continues as well at their respective school's program.

Im confused with the we’re trying to get Rex ready/caught up comments.

he’s been here for what 5 years now?
Yeah and how many times has he seen the field at QB? He switched positions to be a contributing team player. And he was out for awhile fighting cancer, getting chemo.
I think Rex did well last week for it being his first time being the starting QB at SU.

I thought Rex did great on Saturday. He was literally a back up tight end playing special teams a couple of years ago after getting moved from qb

Rex has been here for the entirety of Dino’s tenure, Dino should have him up to speed already. In no way was my post an attack on Rex. Im fully aware of the events of his time here. Dino’s comment concerned me in regards to QB development.

I have no idea what he actually meant but I think he is referring to game speed.
That takes a few games especially since Rex has had very little playing time over his tenure here.

You’re likely right. They’ve not been able to scrimmage either due to covid’s limiting of the offseason. I also think Rex has done his best, and even impressed on some long throws, in his time in. Just think it’s rough our immediate 3 deep at QB isn’t game ready or really even existent. Seems if Rex doesn’t keep us competitive, we are likely massively screwed.

Agreed
I think Rex did enough for us to win
The rest of the team didn't to step up and the defense stepped way back

I am glad he referenced the desire to see his team fight. He seemed to elude to the fact that his team lacks desire at times. Makes sense though, it is obvious to us, I would be concerned if the staff didn't see it.

[6:10] - 'There was a big fight Saturday night after our game, two guys going at it. I couldn't afford to see it but I heard great reviews about those boxers.'

What the hell is he talking about?
There's not a lot of follow-up questions in these.

Lomanchenko and Lopez fight? Apparently it was a big deal but I don't know anyone that still follows boxing.
