DO: Burn The Boats

Yeah I admit, that the history of the phrase is problematic and probably shouldn't have been used. I think it's a good step to apologize and not wear the shirts again.
Isn’t it a reference to the silmarillion?

Ridiculous, it's a concept that didn’t start with Cortez

Problematic, nope. I find thinking they should ditch the shirts and apologize problematic

"As Indigenous alumni of SU, we urge that this matter be addressed immediately. Any use of the phrase “burn the boats” should cease. The entire men’s program staff should be mandated to attend cultural competency trainings. Above all, the program and Odierna should issue a public apology and Odierna should be held accountable for his poor lapse in judgement."

They should schedule Nick Saban and Deebo Sweeney with coach O. lol
My response would start with go ..,….,

Eh I have done more research and tend to agree with you now, as for ditching the short and apologizing, that was more so me wanting them to just move on before this causes more issues, I have no strong opinion on the shirts.

Cortes died 478 years ago...Odierna was apparently alive then so he should've known better.

All year long people have been talking about how offended they were by these shirts. The chatter has been relentless so I'm glad it came to a head.

I'm going to go hug my emotional support stuffed animal and retreat to a safe space on the nearest local college campus to get over this. I'm devastated. Please keep in mind to use my preferred pro-nouns if you respond to this (those/these).

My view - given the historic connection of lacrosse and Syracuse University to the Indigenous community, if there is any in that community who are offended by the phrase and the t-shirts we should respect that and not use them. It is not up to others to judge whether or not some should be offended. Just respect that they are.

That’s aggressive. They acknowledged what they did and stopped. They learned a lesson. When did honest apologies stop being enough? Why do we need these Maoist struggle sessions?

100% agree with this. Well put.

I thought the use of the phrase on shirts was a bit corny because as others have said, it's overused at this point. Would have preferred something more unique or esoteric. But the historical similarities between the Onondaga and Aztecs are the same as the similarities between vikings and the ancient Hittite empire, which is to say, there are no similarities at all. I have plenty thoughts which I'll keep to myself, but if this was going to be a distraction then whatever, better to just end it quick so the team doesn't get dogged by external factors. Last thing this team needs is a local media campaign getting in their heads, even if they did nothing wrong.

What if someone is offended by the offense they have taken? Who becomes the arbiter deciding what offense is most injurious?

No to all of that.

Is this serious? Really ? Come on this is just plain crazy n stupid. Clear very clear what they ment with shirts n wasn’t to offend anyone was to motivate themslves. Ment no disrespect what so ever. This should not even be a big deal why making it constantly talking bout it. Anyone can feel offended by anything doesn’t make it right or wrong. How someone feels from seeing words on a shirt is their problem specially if they take out of context to feel offended.
