Do Not Be Surprised if Devito Trots Out to Start...

Like I said last night, we haven't seen the last of #13.

After the 3rd Q TD on our first drive, we had about 25 yards the rest of the game. Teams are going to dare Shrader to beat them with his arm over and over again.

No reason why DeVito can't hand off to Tucker, even run some RPO and maybe keep the D honest defending the pass.

Don't mean to sound so negative after a win, just not sure how often what we saw last night is a winning formula. We were inches from blowing a 2 TD lead and losing. Maybe I just need to adjust to the idea that defense and running the ball alone can win games for this particular SU team, but in today's college football you almost always need more.

It's a shame that Tommy struggles so much with situational awareness and finding 2nd/3rd/4th targets. Because the way the OL played last night, the way Tucker runs, a lot of it could come together.

Tommy HAS legs, Shredders are just much better and he’s a much stronger guy

I think the big issue is that TD, while capable,, doesn't seem to like to run, which really limits the effectiveness of the RRO. He also would have taken some sacks last night that GS was able to avoid. The pass protect still isn't very good and we saw last night in the 4th how difficult it is when the defense knows Tucker is getting the handoff.
I think we might see TD/GS splitting starts based on the strengths and weaknesses of our weekly opponent.

I'm fine with that as long as DB knows when to replace someone that is ineffective. I was pretty disappointed when the announcers mentioned boos when GS lost his helmet and TD came in briefly.

This is right. The basement and ceiling are lower/higher with Tommy. I’ll take the win, but we’re going to need both.

Is Tommy banged up? Could be wrong but why did Dino burn a timeout just to keep Shrader in the game after his helmet came off? Why not just let Tommy run a play to save the timeout? That was weird. And it was obvious Liberty was stacking the box to stop the run so why not put Tommy in to at least threaten pass which opens up the run?

Sitting in the Dome, I interpreted those boos as directed toward the refs who seemed reluctant to look at it for targeting.

When did the helmet come off? Was it late in the first have? I forget. He may not have seen a reason to save a TO if it was late in the half.

I'm not sure threatening the pass opens the run if the defense feels comfortable blitzing the house because they think they can get home against a QB that isn't evasive.

That's good. I had stepped out of the room, so I wasn't able to catch the context.

I think this is exactly it and I said something similar in another thread (maybe this thread, can't remember). If Dino is looking at the schedule and trying to strategize the best way to get to a job-saving 6 wins and a bowl he has two choices. Tommy might get him more than 6 wins or he could theoretically lose all but one or two or the remaining games. GS is unlikely to get us more than 6 wins but perhaps Dino feels he is more likely to get us to 6. As you say, Tommy has the higher/lower ceiling but maybe Dino is rolling the dice on the guy whom he thinks can give him a better chance of ending up in the middle with a 3-5 finish over the next 8 games. It isn't exactly how I want our coach to be thinking, and I am probably creating something that doesn't actually exist, but it might be factoring into his decision.

I’m hoping Dino took that TO to make a point that his QB was hit illegally and the refs should review it to be sure.

His clock management is so goofy that I’d be fine if that’s why.

Certainly hope it’s not due to an injury for Tommy. Gonna definitely need him at some point this year.

At first glance the hit looked like he led with helmet so I’m 95% sure the timeout was to make sure refs looked at it. On instant replay you could see it was a clean hit.

I think people are going to have to get used to the fact that we have seen the last of Tommy Devito.

I think one thing not said yet is that defenses were stacking the box against TD too. It’s not like defenses didn’t know what we did well. Defenses haven’t acted as scared of TD’s arm as the mythical figure it’s become on this board. Defenses were loading the box and blitzing a lot before GS ever stepped foot in a game. If anything, Liberty didn’t blitz nearly as much as they might have, like Rutgers did against TD.

If FSU stacks the box and run blitzes like Liberty did the last 20 min Tommy will be in next week by halftime.

some of the best plays Shrader had last night were because the box was so stacked he had to use his size to make those runs.. the box would not be the same with a threat of a pass series after series..

We also need to remember, next season when Tommy is gone (there’s no way he comes back to Cuse for his senior year IMO) Shrader is the guy.

Maybe Dino is already prepping for next season LOL

I don’t think this is 100%. If Shrader can’t threaten with the passing game, that will put enough pressure on the staff to play someone who can

FSU’s players are also faster and stronger then liberty’s

Ehhhhhh not so sure about that.

Liberty has a good chunk of top end transfers that they brought in.

FSU is still reeling from previous HCs poor recruiting.

next years FSU class is a different breed, they are currently ranked 6th
Not going to dig into weights and stuff but from 2017-2021 FSU recruiting has been between 11th-22nd nationally. It may not be the peak of their rankings but it’s something we would do unspeakable things dor
