On one hand, we lost. On the other, we played @#3 Clemson and very much looked like we belonged.

If one ignires preseason rankings, I think it’s hard to say that a 4-1 team that went the distance vs. the #3 team in the country in their house isn’t a T25 team.

I think we stay in place.. beat Pitt and we are ranked.

The only time I can remember getting bumped up after a loss was the Miami game where we were 2 yards short of the end zone.

Best guess: Up marginally. Not ranked.

And here a bad penalty or a 4th down stop away

Would some funky losses from lower ranked teams make a difference? Probably stupid question, I’d just love some kind of outcome from today.

I think the narrative from the sports pundits starts changing this week, but not sure it will be enough to get us into the Top 25. I do believe, like Orangefoo, if we win @Pitt next we finally return to the Top 25.

Cheers,
Neil

Less votes. AP writers will look at it as a loss were we knocked their phenom QB out and kept it close against a 3rd stringer.

Just beating Pitt won’t do it. Need to beat UNC as well. Hoping the team can keep it up for next week and avoid the letdown.

We're pretty far apart in the 2 polls. 28 vs 36.

Coaches where we're 28. You'll see Duke or VT drop, BYU likely drop. But Colorado, NC State probably leap us. So not far to go.

AP we're 36, there's just too much to overcome there with a loss. Have to beat Pitt and maybe UNC and NC State, unless there are a lot of other losses.

We are going to get more votes.
That team played Clemson tough on their field.
If we go down the AP poll is even more worthless.
That game will get the eyes of the committee and we will be deemed a good team.

Are we one of the 25 best teams in the country? Yes.

Will the AP or Coaches Poll reflect that? Not after this week. The result of a loss is almost always a drop in the polls, no matter how close. There were 10 teams ahead of us in the AP, and some of them have already won.

Beat Pitt we probably get into the top 25. Beat Pitt and UNC, we are a lock.

People ask "When do we know we're back?"
Answer: When we stop taking a loss as a moral victory.

Except in his post game presser Dino downplayed any moral victory.

Good. He should. They played to win, not to feel good about themselves. Obviously when you take this loss with context, there is a lot to like, and it shows we are a legit player who can hang with anyone, anywhere. My point was that when we were a perennial power, all we did was look at wins, and losses. We never had "moral Victories."

I’d agree about “moral victories,” except with the caveat that being ranked matters to me. Part of it is a confidence thing, part of it is a fan thing, part of it amid a recruiting thing, and part of it is a national narrative thing.

Moral victories are ways fans spin tough losses. It is what it is. When we stop having moral victories, then we have truly turned the corner.

Axe said it well. Moral victories/losses dont get you in the top 25. Need a big win vs pitt or consecutives

I think we are a top 25 team. The problem is that our resume doesn't show it. We've beaten nobody that is good. I think we beat Pitt, and are still on the outside looking in. Then during our bye week, we'll slip a bit further down as teams leap frog us. If we come back and knock off UNC, then I think we're in, or right on the brink.
The bottom line is, that it really doesn't matter a ton. Our team is what it is, and if we're a top 25 team, we should beat pitt and UNC

Fringe teams ahead of us lost or are losing

We will know tomorrow at 2 where we stand
