Does addition of Alton Robinson change the DL outlook this season?

It's still possible that we could add Isaiah Johnson from JUCO. He's listed as 2017.

Both. I read somewhere that he liked us quite a bit and his tape is impressive.
Was under the impression he was a 2018 guy. Not sure why he would still be shopping programs now if he were a 2017.

Ilooked him up on the recruiting sites and couldn't find him. So I looked under 2017 and there he was. I think that Robinson is an indication that Dino isn't done yet.

Nearly positive we are done and that he is a 2018

Yup, sad, kid seems a bit soft. Has had opportunity

By the Pitt game? These 20 yo kids are machines. Assuming he was keeping in decent shape and waiting for an opportunity, and that opportunity is here and now; cant imagine it taking more than 2-3 weeks to get in football shape and understand the scheme. Love the pickup, much needed.
I don't think he was talking about being in shape. I think he was referring to getting up to speed in our defense. The kid missed all of preseason camp.

Doesn't make sense to have Elmore spend the whole preseason at FB and then throw him in at DT. They recruited him to help an anemic running game and help keep ED clean.

And he's Alton Robinson's teammate. Same JUCO.

And you're right he's listed as class of 2017 on every recruiting site.
Ok then. The only rational explanation is that Tucker really is holding this whole thing up by insisting that the kid was disqualified years ago.

I make nightly sacrifices to appease the football gods and bar Slayton from injury.

Did Johnson suffer an injury of some sort as a JUCO?

ETA: after a wee bit of digging around, I discovered that he suffered an ACL injury and missed all of last year.

We had a kid a couple of years ago (before Steven came to SU) that was DQed for concussions, was a DT by name of Isaiah Johnson, that's what the "joke" is in reference too.

Boy, he was gonna be a good one, too. Remember his diving pick vs wake?!

Ideal depth at DT would be 2 5th years, backed by 2 juniors, and a couple of all league candidates in the mix. We don't have that.

But what we have at DT is better than in 2015 and 2016, and what we have at DE is better than what we had in 2016. That is true not only at DL but through out the D.

This better than 2016 thought is what matters I'm not sure if its true at DT with the loss of Clark but if we are slightly better on D and play the offensive system substantially better then we have a fighting chance.

We may be in some high scoring games which is ok if we are high scoring.

Agreed. And it is important to remember that Rome isn't built in a day. This offseason [and through the class of 2018], the coaching staff has substantially improved the QB, OL, WR, RB, DE, LB, CB, and S positions. And arguably TE, although depth is a concern there.

DT is clearly a huge area need. I would expect that to be a MAJOR focus of our recruiting between now and February, and wouldn't be surprised if they dip into the JUCO ranks to bolster short term while giving high school prospects time to round into form.

Conversely, at DE I expect them not to go JUCO anymore, unless there is somebody out there who is a stud we can reel in. By my count, Coleman / Black / Berry / Robinson / Pickard [who I believe already redshirted] are all sophomores with three years of eligibility left. Jonathan is a true frosh, as is Ellis. Morton probably redshirts. So, they can probably roll with that nucleus for the next 2-3 seasons, which would make bringing in somebody to play immediately less important--I think they'll focus on HS prospects at DE in the class of 2018.

But back to your point--I think we can expect the D to improve somewhat, primarily due to: [1] experience / the players understanding their assignments, [2] better depth at several positional units, and [3] better size / athleticism / depth in the secondary. If the offense makes the 2nd year jump that Babers has described, then we're in business. And the D will continue to get better in year 3, year 4, etc. with the personnel the coaching staff is loading into the pipeline -- especially when we iron out the issues at DT.

Did they pick Robinson up via the waver list? Seems like a quality last second pick up and for a much needed position as well. This staff works hard and looks everywhere.

I think it's safe to say the addition has helped ;) Seriously though, how great did this end up working out for us? Random, out of no where pick up, who ends up being one of our best lineman. If this kid continues to work hard and keep himself out of trouble, skies the limit.

Can't agree enough. Absolute Fuccillo addition.

Hopefully doesn't follow the SU DL tradition of making foolish life mistakes. This is one tradition I want stopped ASAP.
