Does anyone expect our D to play Fournette like Auburn did?

We need to basically zone blitz and run blitz all game to hopefully stop him or hit him in the backfield before he gets started. I guarantee that is what our game plan will be from Bullough. We really have nothing to lose by selling out and just going man coverage on the outside, even if it is very soft and piling up on the run.

Would rather the WR's beat us than Fournette.

DE's crashing all game a as well hitting anything in front of them...hard.

If LSU has to rely on the passing game, they will get blitzed beyond belief. Their QB will not know what hits him. LSU O Line is very good, but no line can stop the blitz, especially when it occurs 60-70% of plays. Add in the crowd noise, a team with nothing to lose and a couple Syracuse bounces of the ball, it could happen...

They don't necessarily have to even stop the blitz ... their QB is quite mobile ... if we blitz and he breaks contain it could be a long afternoon.

Auburn struggled on run D against an FCS team, they are really a mess right now. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if your run D is better than Auburn's is (but that could be true and LSU could still put up big numbers on the ground).

However - I'm expecting LSU to use this opportunity to air the ball out and get Harris some experience throwing the ball for later in the season, when LSU will need to throw the ball against Ole Miss, Bama, and Texas A&M. Don't expect to see the LSU offense that played Auburn (extremely run heavy) - I think you'll see the plan from the start is going to be a lot of passing.

Fournette gained 228 yards against Auburn...so sadly, yes I do.

We've given up a lot of yards to savy, solid passers who read the field well. We've also caused a lot of TO's and get after the QB.

Our best defense will be a credible offense. Have to find a way to be able to move the chains on offense and keep their O off of the field for more than we kept CMU off of the field. If we give LSU twice as much TOP we lose by 50 -- unless we get an insane number of turnovers or ST scores. Control the ball. Take an occasional deep shot if it's there. Let the clock run and shorten the game as much as possible... And strip the ball if at all possible.

I remember the days when we could go onto an opponent's message board and brag about our players. Not that we did, but we could have.

Sigh.

Next year. The Dungey tour starts.

Expect to see a ton of morgan, chauncy, and the juco lb

Did you see some of the intentional wiffs that Auburn laid out there? Do you expect our D to do the same? Not me.

If I was Miles that's what I would do. He has a QB that needs to get some confidence and is playing a team that has given up a ton of yards in the air to, in my opinion, poor teams with average QB's. Fournette will obviously get his yards regardless. SU can pressure the QB so it could be a decent test for LSU's mobile QB to try throwing from the pocket. Miles is probably not very concerned about winning the game and will use it to work on things as you suggest. Does SU have a chance? If the defense can force a few TO's and the offense play mistake free and score TD's instead of long FG attempts then yes. the former is quite possible, the latter very unlikely with a walk-on QB who was 5th string at best less then a month ago. To really have a chance Mahoney would have to be the 2nd coming of...well...Eric Dungey. And how likely is that to happen again so soon.

If SU's corners are playing the same distance off the line, blitzing isn't going to matter unless LSU tries to go deep. You can't put 8 in the box and play 10 yards off the WR's and expect to get to the QB on the blitz. If the plan is to blitz heavy, SU needs to play press coverage and invite LSU to try and throw deep.

I'd look for them to use a lot of play-action and roll Harris out where he has the option to run or pass.

I think we need to go with a 4-4-3. Bring in the extra LB and try and load the box. We all know we are susceptible in the passing game already, so why not load to stop the run. Lets test their QB to throw it. Someone already stated one of the keys to our defense doing well, that is having an offense that can stay on the field for longer than three plays to give the defense a rest. I truly believe if our offense can give our defense some time to rest that we might be able to keep it within two to three scores and be competitive.

Respectfully disagree. I haven't ever seen a Shafer/Bullough Defense ever lay down and not play hard. I have also never seen a Shafer team not hit hard and tackle. Auburn was flat out avoiding tackling Fournette, don't see that happening here. I would never question this Defense's toughness or heart. We do need our secondary to step up and cover somebody though.

Please God, I pray they do not do what you are saying...remember Ga Tech when they decided to change the scheme = Disaster.

Keep the same scheme and personell and just get after it like the front 7 have been doing all year.

I can see the D stopping Fournette on the first few plays and seeing the Dome go nuts, would be awesome.

No doubt as I hope it's not Fournette the bowling ball and we have 11 pins for him to choose from to knock down.

What I want to see is how well we do play. It will tell me how far we have yet to go to get back into the top 25 scene like we were during the 80s & 90s. As the old Big East became more of a basketball oriented conference when VT and others left, football became secondary. Along with being a private school in the NE and subsequent bad coaching hire decisions made by our old AD, we fell hard.

Our first year in the ACC (when FSU were the NC when they beat Auburn) our game with FSU was over in my mind in the first 2 -3 minutes. They were faster and bigger almost to a man and better coached as our current football HC made his way through his first year as a head coach. Our recruiting has gotten better top to bottom and we are playing a dozen freshmen this year and are matching up much better with teams in the ACC and with our new QB (Dungey who is out this game), our offense is much better.

I am excited to see a potential #1 team in the country play us. And I want to judge for myself how much further we still have to go given perceived better recruiting and a whole lot of freshmen out there. If we play as good or better than Auburn I will be excited for our team for the rest of the year.
well said. that is exactly how I would feel if our basketball team played against yours

I think that we are going to see Ted Taylor Chauncy S and Morgan play a ton this game as they are all ok in the pass game but will bring a greater physicality to D than some of the other guys. One other thought that i have is that if we go with 4 lb's I wouldnt be surprised to see Luke A playing one of the spots

The best way to beat our D is to run a balanced, ball-control type offense using TEs down the seams and WRs underneath on the edges. We tend to do fairly well against one-dimensional offenses. Fournette is one of those backs that can pick up big chunks regardless of down and distance. If I were LSU's o-coordinator, I would mix up the runs and passes, running in traditional passing situations and throwing on running downs.

we rarely throw on first down. if you read our message boards it is one of the things we complain about constantly. and out TE's are pretty much extra offensive lineman most of the time. we sometimes forget they are even allowed to catch the ball.

trust me, this is not a knock on your defense in any way, but the only person who will stop Fournette from breaking 150 would be Les Miles.
We have heard that before...many times.

I expect our linebackers to hit like they always do – hard.

I expect to see our safeties look like bowling pins and Fontenette to look like a bowling ball.

I will be LIVID if our smurf safeties try to tackle this kid above the belt though.

I would disagree I think they are trying to make Jeter a big part of the passing game (what little passing game LSU utilizes) he is #2 with receptions and I think #2 on the team in targets. He is the only one with a TD reception as well. He is a massive target and the type that will give our secondary fits at 6'7" he is my #2 concern behind Fournette and of course Harris on the ground.

Punt block rush defense like shafer did to Rutgirls when we sacked their QB enough times to make him transfer out.

We will be rotating in and out a lot of D-lineman and in a very hot,no air movement dome Miles would be smart to rotate his o-lineman.
