play rain or shine? Planets have aligned for the first time ever in many many many years to allow me to get up to the quad to catch them if they indeed play on the steps of Hendricks Chapel with this weather forecast.

Does anybody know if they play rain or shine? Still one hour before game time? Thanks in advance.

When it rains, it is only brass and percussion. Woodwind instruments get damaged in the rain.

interesting. our HS band marches all instruments rain or no rain why wouldnt SU band when they are only playing for a few minutes. you don't see the Macys parade remove woodwind and they are marching for hr or more

According to AI “
“No, woodwind instruments should not be played in the rain, as moisture can damage their pads, wood, and other components, potentially causing them to swell, crack, rust, or grow mold. While some materials like modern plastic clarinets and waterproof flutes are more resistant, most traditional woodwinds are highly susceptible to water damage.Playing under a poncho can offer some protection, but the best advice is to avoid playing in the rain entirely and to thoroughly dry the instrument immediately after exposure. “

Interesting, I had never noticed nor known about these issues with the band instruments.

Eh depends on how bad the rain is and who the band is.

My mom is a clarinet player and used to do field band stuff, she [to this day!] has a separate plastic/cheaper clarinet for weather.

Definitely the real wood ones don't go out in the rain, if put away wet or cold they can crack. Some really expensive ones get kept in humidity control environments even.

The band played in some pretty miserable weather at Archbold back in the day.

Macy’s is a once in a lifetime opportunity for bands. They’ll march if it’s hailing fireballs.

Otherwise, woodwinds should not be played in the rain. They get ruined. I play sax and the rain will soak the dozens of pads on it and rot them out. Your HS band director isn’t being smart.

I get your point. It's the wood and the pads. And you can't require kids to have two instruments. Military bands, etc. can provide and repair instruments for their members. Schools generally cannot/don't.

The time kids in the band put in is insane. Hours and hours every week to put on a show. The disrespect they get from many SU fans makes my blood boil.

144% THIS.

SUMB is a 1 credit Pass/Fail course.

And it’s the hardest, most time intensive 1 freaking credit anybody will ever earn in college.

Think about how “credit hours” usually work:
A 3 credit hour course usually meets for either 2x 1.5 hour classes / week,
or 3x 1 hour classes / week.

SUMB is multiple nights / week, plus prolly 6+ hours on game day.

And not just sitting in a classroom, you’re in the Dome learning new songs and new marching formations almost every week.

And that’s not counting any potential road games and/or bowl games.

I did 2 years in SUMB.

1 year we had an away weekend where we were at Annapolis on Sat, and then played halftime at an Eagles game on Sunday.

We also played the Cherry Bowl, which was frankly miserable because:
Detroit/Pontiac in late December,
and we got blown out by the Twerps.

I was happy to read they got new uniforms. I donated probably about 10-15 years ago for new ones that they got back then. Those kids work so hard and some are from other local schools like OCC, Lemoyne etc. A friend’s daughter was in the band her 2 years at OCC before she transferred for her last 2 years at SU. I met some of the band through her. They deserve a lot of credit for all the work, time, they put in to represent SU. My son and his family marched with SU’s band as alumni when they were in San Diego for the Holiday Bowl last year.

As far as the question in the OP, my mom came to the VT game last year and we went to see the band on the quadwalk. It was cold and light rain, here's a pic I took of the band happily playing away. I imagine if it were pouring that would be a different situation both for the band and the crowd.

So what are all these bands doing that play at all these college games? They play in all kinds of rain. Do they all have backup cheaper equipment? Perhaps. or they just live with it

I know many kids playing in college pep bands and the like and they dont have multiple instruments. They also dont have fancy symphony woodwinds either,

The team walks past Hendricks 2 hours and 1 minutes before game time, and I think the band is usually out for that. Not sure. But I have seen the band play in the rain before.
They are, as are the cheerleaders. Believe the dance team is out there too.

Yeah you don't need two unless your main one is high end/wooden, and if you're into it enough to have a $4,000 or whatever instrument then you probably already have a cheap backup/hand me down/old one.
