Donnie Freeman in the portal

I'm definitely insecure about our coaching. Gerry might be great, and I hope he is, but his record isn't. I mean, out of the 3 schools that fought for Hodgson, we ended up with the biggest question mark of a coach. And I feel like that's the nice way of putting it.

My knowledge about their nil is the same as my knowledge about anybody's nil, including ours: nothing but rumors. All I can do is compare their rumored number with our rumored nunber. And Gerry might end up being the better coach, but as of right NOW Providence made the better hire. I honestly don't see how you can think that Providence is a step down after the things you were seeing in the coaching search, mixed with the era of nil. I don't remember exactlu who said what in that crazy thread, but I think you were one of the people that said our history had no impact on our coach search.
Completely disagree, this will be fodder for the anti in house hire, Maybe that's you from Jump Street I don't know. How about this, we said no, not interested? How about this as well the mutual level of interest was predicated on his availability and current appeal, proposed skill included? How about this, significant concerns prior to any formal involvement that were only confirmed during the actual formal evaluation, with a very quick confirmation of those concerns? Lastly how about this, When we firmly moved in another direction an absolute disgusting amount of misinformation was put out there causing the ill informed to speculate? Well not how about this, That only confirmed significant concern as it relates to this individual. Extremely grateful. I am very grateful for this choice, and by the way we also looked elsewhere right? I agree with you on one assumption we better get the nil in place, I trust we are and we should have done that several years ago based upon what we were left with a huge mess. Look at other coaching searches as well, You think this is easy we did tremendously well 1A, who I trust is alpha One, Gerry Mcnamara. I trust he has a very nasty chip on his shoulder with skill humility and faith to match. If we support him we are gonna get nasty.

17/7 playing in the ACC is what will get him paid. Whether he is "worth" what he gets is a different debate.

The emotional reactions to DF's season - to be clear, not entirely unjustified - tend to cloud objectivity. Programs are going to look at his productivity in that dysfunctional offense and project that he is worth the risk once he is in their culture and system.
He played well for awhile after he returned from injury, then regressed quite dramatically as the season went on. I don't know if he was fully healthy down the stretch, but he seemed to make consistently bad decisions when games were on the line, and it wasn't fun to watch. He'll get paid, but I'm okay with another program writing the check.

GMac's a winning lottery ticket? 🤣

Hodgson might leave for the SEC (which I'd take in a heartbeat), and he might flame out. Watching Cooley flame out a Gtown is something I didn't expect. But thinking that a guy with GMac's coaching history is a better choice because an actual better choice might flame out is just insane.
I commented on one of your posts prior to this, Very easy to see now. I wonder If you are one of those who literally waits for someone to fall just to prove your point, even if they had mad success, then fell a couple of times. Point proven? Justification yes! Sort of like how Red was treated except unfortunately there were some definitive holes in a very difficult situation, for a new head coach who had to pick up a lot. He certainly wasn't afforded the ability to learn on the fly in this day and age. Anyways you can answer those questions for your own self, Here's a good analogy a message board and its information is a lot like a sport, such as Basketball. Your heart attitude and what you choose to focus on as it relates to positivity and self improvement largely rest upon your shoulders, After all it is just a game. However it certainly will be a reflection of the character in your life as you look upon a mirror. I am sure there are many much better, much worse, However certain things will not be avoided, a true reflection of what is most important, myself included Starman

He had the weird thing where he didn’t start after some practice thing and he was never the same after that. He was pretty dominant in the stretch right before it.

Tbh I wish Donnie and Nait well. I think they are both very good players (don’t hate me lol). Freeman is just soft and injury prone. Nait and Donnie’s motor lacks and Nait obviously had some turnover problems here and his shot could some work.
But tbh I think think both are victims of our inept coaching staff the last few years. George was a top PG in the ACC at freaking GT…he didn’t just all of the sudden forget how to play basketball. Donnie still looked decent even with an inept coaching staff. Hate to say it but I fully expect both those guys to go to teams next year and play alotttt better than this year. We quite literally had a coaching staff that did not know how to run or draw up an offense.

Donnie will have his pick of schools. He needs somewhere with a good coach and established program. I think he would do well somewhere like St Johns if Pitino stays.

George hate to say it but his game is suited for a place like Virginia. He would killlll it with Odom and the style of offense he runs if he followed Autry to Virginia. Don’t shoot the messenger but if George went to Virginia I could see hime being an All-league type. Just being honest. Neither of these guys are bad players. They were just put in a reallllll bad spot by our coaches

I don't get the George love - 3 seasons of college ball. 40% FG, 31% from 3 and a 2-1 assist to TO ratio.

Guy is not a winning player and put up good assists stats on bad teams because someone has to get assists.

Same reason (IMHO) Donnie's 17 and 7 numbers are skewed. Someone has to put up numbers, doesn't necessarily mean they helped with winning.

I know others wanted to move on, but I for one am disappointed that we didn't get another year with Donnie. I have no idea what his money demands are, but I always thought that with a coach that pushed him to be a Power Forward and not a Kevin Durandt style guard focused on 3 pointers, he could have blossomed. His injuries sure didn't help his career either.

Unfortunately, that's not how he sees himself as a player. He thinks he's the next Kevin Durant.

Before NIL we would all want to keep a talent like Freeman. Now days when money is spent and it doesn't produce winning its easy to say "oh well lets hire some new guys". Potential and Development are unfortunate casualties of the current system. Coaches aren't going to last by developing guys for other programs to steal. They aren't going to last without winning right away. They aren't going to last without a good system around them to supply NIL and spend it wisely on the correct players. It seems inevitable that the mid-majors will become a minor league of sorts for FR/SO that aren't top 25 NBA prospect types.

yeah, and he's not KD at all.

Even KD made his bones on his midrange game, jumping over defenders for clean looks from 10-15 feet. Of course, he also shot 40% from three in his one year at Texas, but he took 2/3 of his shots within the arc.

This is minor league baseball at this point. In and out, rooting for shirts and eating a hot dog and watching the zooperstars and not really caring about what happens in the game

Let's make this like pro sports but with no contracts, this is gonna be great
i agree...a lot...the part of me that still cares wants the team to win and get back to old ways

but theres a new and growing side that also just sees how ludicrous a lot of what is going on now is

People forget that Donnie was a late riser up recruiting boards and viewed as a dev guy. That’s exactly how his two years played out — incredibly talented but needs some seasoning. We’ve had plenty of players like that in the past (Christmas comes to mind). I think we’ll regret losing him, but budgets require tough choices.
