Donnie Freeman in the portal

Some of you guys are funny bagging on this kid. Freeman has skills and NBA potential but he played for a terrible staff who made kids worse. As long as Freeman buys into to being coached hard he'll be a star. He should go to UConn if he wants to win and be coached up.

Had he not been injury prone i would fully wager he gets paid to come back. It’s not bagging- He missed half of last year and 1/3 of this year and was gimpy on and off all year as well.

Yep he is clearly talented and yeah Red and staff sucked but he has missed a ton of games. If he is a top 15 portal guy, based on various rankings, that is with the asterisk that he can stay on the court

Pure ability has never been a problem for Donnie. Knowing how to use that ability, attitude, and motor have always been the issue. He still has to learn how to finish around the basket. For his size and athletic ability he took a lot of fade aways, awkward shots, and outside of transition couldn’t put the ball on the floor and take it to the hoop. Before NIL I would have loved to see him stay and develop. If he developed a game like CJ Fair with his size and ability, Donnie would be a NBA all star.

Boeheim blamed the players, not the coaches.

If UConn (which is probably the best program in college basketball right now) wants Donnie, that just reinforces my belief that SU fans who want to get rid of him have lost their minds.
if this kid needs another man (coach) to beg him to play hard and doesn't have the testicle fortitude to work hard naturally...then he can pack rocks. He sucks. I saw it in person.

The simple truth is he doesn't want to be here and nothing else really matters in relation to that fact. Also all fans have pretty much lost their minds.

Syracuse had its chance with Donnie. First, I think he wants a change of scenery and was at Syracuse for Autry. Dude should’ve been in the NBA now if things went to plan. GMAC has his own plan. So what if he brought Donnie back? What about Sadiq White? It makes no sense from a roster construction standpoint to have both. Donnie probably has a slightly higher ceiling overall, but Sadiq White is clearly the better fit for GMAC and what needed to happen happened. Good luck to Donnie and the next coach in getting Donnie to really break out beyond delivering a nice individual stat sheet. Seems like a good person, so genuinely rooting for it to happen. But I or no one should lose a second of sleep because you should’ve accepted the day Autry was out that he would be gone.

It’s all in whatever stats you want to cherry pick. He has been injured for significant time both years and has never beaten a Q1 team. Hes def not physical and not a leader.

If you’re UConn though you obviously feel fine about developing talent and he won’t be asked to be a leader a they’ll surround him with other physical guys to toughen him up.

They obviously think with more talent around him he will be maximized. He unequivocally cannot carry a team At least he did not ours. We massively regressed defensively when he came back, No? I also think he is a tremendously good kid who tried in a very hard situation. Think if we had a lead dog who would bark at him and tell him where to go It would have been much better. He would have been a very good second or third option if we had that. if he plays the way he did last year, however is on a very good team he will be no more than that. I wish him well you could tell he honestly cared.

I don’t know about Autry, but I’m sure via Luke Murray that Hurley has been hitting up Brendan Straughn to get the run down on Donnie. Hurley even with 2 national championships and a 3rd championship game appearance has never had a player with the ceiling that Donnie has (he’s not even close to reaching it) and he has had some amazing players that him and his staff has developed. Stephon Castle was a top 10 guy, but Donnie was an unfinished Power Forward in the top 10. Like if they get him to breakout, he looks like a genius. If not, he better have backup plans to mitigate the damage (I’m sure he is thinking of those with every other move he is planning). Also just interesting timing for Hurley, he doesn’t just lose Luke Murray, but Alex Karban which has been the glue guy of the resurgence for UConn. He already has a great legacy, but I think he knows the next 4 years are even more important, even if he doesn’t replicate the same level of success, but a few final fours or big east championships, will go along way with how people will revere him in history and these last 4 years weren’t just a lightning in a bottle time with an all time assistant coach and players.

I would disagree about Donnie having a higher ceiling than any of Hurleys guys. Castle, Klingan, Reed, off the top of my head. Probably Mullens, and I would take Karaban over Donnie 10 times out of 10.

Donnie is a very nice college player, he lacks elite shooting for the stretch 4 he wants to be. Hes not a great finisher at the rim, and lacks aggressiveness, especially the offensive end. He seems like a good kid. He was our best player because he’s pretty good at a lot of things, but just not great at anything. I just don’t think he has that dog in him that a guy with his skill set needs to make at the next level.

One final note. we flat out lost the BC game because he missed the front end of a one and one with a few seconds on the clock that would’ve given us a four point lead. In two other games, he had multiple bad turnovers in the last five minutes of the game that contributed significantly to the loss. Had a very bad habit of turning his back his defender and getting stripped by a secondary defender or making a lazy or ill advised pass for an easy 2 the other way.

If we could keep him, great because he’s a talent. But probably not worth the investment, and White is going to be looking for 25 minutes a game and he and Donnie cannot coexist at that position.

Good grief
