I need help here. Has the guy even seen the field yet? How does he not have at least 3 years of eligibility left with a red-shirt year and a medical red-shirt year?

6th year has to be granted by the NCAA and only if he had to red-shirt his freshman year because of injury.

Is that the case? I only remember the injury before last year which should be open and shut for a medical year.

Junior Year (2013): Did not play in any games. (injury during Spring ball)

Sophmore Year (2012): Played in all 13 games.

Freshman Year (2011): Did not play in any games. (coaches decision)

Looks like we're back to listing players academically.

He has 2014 and 2015 left.
So he could apply for the medical redshirt for a 6th year and also have 2016 if he chooses.

No.

You have a 5 year window of eligibility to play a max of 4 seasons. Everyone starts their college careers with a potential redshirt year in their back pocket. Only ONE. They don't have seperate "freshmen redshirts" and "medical redshirts". They're all the same.

The problem with redshirting a kid as a true freshman is that if the kid has a serious injury later in his career, he's already used up his one and only redshirt. Simmons used his in 2011.

Now the NCAA has been known to grant a player a 6th year of eligibility if he was unfortunate enough to have missed TWO seasons due to serious injuries or other extenuating circumstances. They don't grant exceptions because a player wasn't good enough to play as a true frosh.

I don't expect to see Simmons here in 2016. He will get 3 seasons worth of playing time here total, unless the NCAA changes the rules.
