LeMoyne and FS were exhibition games, the cupcakes almost everyone in D1 at our level plays at the start of the season. One thing JB is adamant about is that, and I am quoting him, - “It takes a year for an incoming freshman to get used to playing at this level”. At the time of that statement, we were still in the Big East. Most of the time this has proven to be accurate except for an elite caliber player like Carmelo Anthony who was NBA ready after his freshman year. Specifically what I am referencing here is PPG.

The starting five may include freshmen and once we move into the regular season we’ll see quickly at the Battle 4 Atlantis on November 25 how good our younger players are. Hopefully they’ll do well. However, if JB’s opinion is true players you would believe to be *close but not really at the same level as Anthony have to adjust to this level in some way(s). If we end up surprised by someone young all the better. The following is an example of players who were *close but still needed to get their shooting and game established as freshmen. At these players level we’re talking an average of just a few PPG but perhaps still proves JB’s formula correct. Players not of the same caliber as the following take more time.

Note: I picked these players at random out of the air – no pre planning. So, it is what it is. Most of these players stayed four years so there is more playing time to examine either their ascent or descent. Points of interest are added for each player.

*Dave Bing, out of Washington, D.C. Spingarn H.S. 6’2’ 180. ’62-63 freshman team 25.7 PPG. ’63-’64 sophomore - varsity 25.5 PPG. ’64-’65 junior 23.6 PPG. 65-66 senior 28.4PPG. (still stands as the record at SU). >> Ernie Davis convinced Dave to come to SU. With Dave to build around took team from 8-13 to 22-6 NCAA contender. HOF ’80, 12 seasons NBA 20.3 PPG. First round second pick by Detroit. ROY - first guard to do it in 20 years beating out Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor. 7 time NBA All Star, #21 retired, #22 first # retired at SU. More people came to see him lead the freshman team than the varsity. I was one of them. Amazing rebounder as well. Had hops that put him above the rim and a stroke that was silky smooth. <<

*Roosevelt Bouie, out of Kendall N.Y. 6’11 235 ’76-77 10.9 PPG, ‘77-’78 10.5 PPG ‘78-’79 15.2 PPG ’80-’81 16.1 PPG >> One of the first recruits of JB and one of the most dominating centers in Syracuse history, he would combine with classmate Louis Orr to form the Louie and Bouie show and produce a four year record of 100 -18. He was the 34th pick in the 1980 draft by the Dallas Mavericks. When contract negotiations failed he went to Italy and played for thirteen seasons where he is considered a legend. Most sought after recruit in country before committing to SU. The most important recruit SU ever in SU history in terms of attracting fans to the Dome to watch his incredible play and helping to recruit players who combined to form the dynamic SU teams followed him to SU in the 80’s. >> Big East ROY, First Team All Big East all 3 years, First Team AA junior year. Announced he would forego his senior season the first player under JB to do so. Drafted 13th first round by the Nets. I was reading the interview Donna had with the three freshmen and it seemed as if they were rather naively (I know, they are freshmen) feeling the worst was behind them in terms of adjusting to college and the college game. But I suppose we can't fault them for over-confidence because we would prefer them to be that way rather than t'other! It was poignant to read Kaleb's interview where he said - or implied (can't remember) - "I wasn't ready. I had some anxiety." etc. When we're in the middle of something, we put all of our energy into getting through. Reflection comes later.

The people on your list were absolutely stellar. I wish I had been able to see some of them play.

I wonder what the more experienced players tell the newbies? It reminds me of when I was first pregnant. Everyone was so happy and optimistic and all was rainbows and puppies. When I got closer to delivering, I began to hear the cautionary words: "You know, it may sting a bit." I picture Gbinije and Cooney in a corner, looking at the freshmen, and saying, "Those poor suckers! They have no idea what's about to hit them."

For all intents and purposes, DaJuan is a freshman. We have four inexperienced but hopeful players on the team who have been waiting for this season forever. Let the games begin!

Kaleb always came across as kind of the high-strung, nervous type. I don't necessarily see that from all 3 freshman. I think Lydon has looked timid and might need more time to adjust, but Malachi strikes me as the type who doesn't get intimidated by anybody on the basketball court. He's a gamer who wants the ball in his hands, from what I've seen in high school and in the exhibition games so far. Confidence can work wonders for an athlete and I think Malachi has some to spare. And Howard seems Triche-esque in his demeanor; very even-keel and unlikely to be rattled, though he probably won't be looking at much playing time.

Off-court, who knows. But on court, I think these freshman will adjust quicker than expected, especially Malachi.

Agreed. Kaleb had much more responsibility and was just over-matched as well. Just wish we had Diagne. Yeah, Malachi looks like belongs right away. Lydon will get there. Hopefully he won't have to spend too much time at the 5 if/when things go south. I have a feeling he could be overwhelmed at practice trying to learn an extra position or two. He's a stretch 4 or a 3 like a Chandler Parsons. Howard I have no opinion on yet.

Lydon is already experiencing adversity, in the sense that Malachi has become the starter and when Lydon comes in, so far he hasn't sizzled. I'm sure he hoped for something different. Let's hope he can develop some versatility in his game. Howard is aware of the Malachi/Lydon hype and has adjusted his mind accordingly. I had the impression he is waiting in the weeds and then hopes to leap onto the court and bedazzle!
