Peter Carey said he's learned more about playing center under Onuaku at Siena than he learned during his entire time at SU under Allen Griffin. That is a devastating indictment on Griff as well as Autry. Statements like that about the coaching staff in conjunction with what we're seeing as a product on the court only further the conclusion that recruits will not want to come here if their chance of being developed here for the NBA is poor.

The coaching staff needs to be nuked. This ridiculous keep-it-in-the-family hiring practice is no different than nepotism. The only difference is in this case its not genetic. There should have been a national search for a coach. Autry never proved himself, and to be honest, GMac in hindsight probably would have been 1000x better if they wanted to keep it in the family. The talent evaluation for portal talent alone is horrifying. Going to be a long winter, in the words of Autry, "ya know"?

Well, from his results so far he still hasn’t learned much. Maybe it’s talent.

Not hiring a big man to coach big men has and will always be the most perplexing decision this program (Jim Boeheim) has ever made. It never made sense to anybody, yet never changed. If Red is fine with continuing that, and it appears he is, then he’s doing himself absolutely zero favors.

I didn't want to hear this.

GMAC has never proved it either.

I find it ironic that you are critical of the alumni hires (Red and Grif) but in the same comment reference two other alumni as being better coaches.
The two alums were forwards. For whatever reason we haven't added a former big man to the staff.

Gerry added two to Siena.

Red could have given Arinze the spot that went to Dakota Leffews former coach. I'm sure he'd have been thrilled if he had been.

I find it ironic that the actual alumni who  should have been hired here as a position coach were not (Onuaku). More irony is how Griffin is a former guard here teaching bigs and Onuaku isn't here, lol. Whether or not Carey lights it up straight away is not the point. You really got me there chief.

Love GMac... But they are 4-4. I wouldn't say that he is better yet.

Like others have said, they won 4 games last year but also they’ve been underdogs every game. At least the first 7, I didn’t look at their last game.

On one hand I understand the infatuation with in-house hires. Who doesn't love Gmac and Arinze? But Syracuse basketball has not been a well oiled machine for a decade. Why would you keep promoting executives in a struggling company and expecting anything different?

I've been saying this for a while. I don't think he's a good coach at all. Boeheim was a good coach he just wore out his welcome being old and fussy.

I wouldn't have been comfortable with GMac either, and given the choice would have probably picked Red. That being said, I've only watched a couple of Siena games this year, but they seem to play A LOT harder and demonstrate accountability. Obviously they are bereft of talent and it's tough to make a direct comparison, but the way the players comport themselves is night and day vs. SU. Maybe JB was right about GMac. Time will tell.

It has been mentioned many times that one of JB's blind spots was not hiring a big man to recruit and coach bigs.

I was 50/50 on the Red/Gmac thing. That said, since things seem to have gotten a lot worse after Gmac left, I do often wonder how much he was holding together last year.

His career would be toast if he was on this staff. So good for him jumping while he still could.

Gerry has quite a bit of work to do to be in consideration for our job in the future but who knows.

All the coaches had a tough year last year including Gerry and he wasn’t thrilled about the situation but there was no where for him to go last year. Also, may be unpopular opinion here, but Gerry really likes Gerry and he had a little bit of JB in him the older he got if ya catch my drift

I think we need a little bit more JB in the program. Couldn’t care less about ego. All big-time coaches have it. Look no further than our former rival and the winner of each of the last two national championships and their head coach.

I was 100/0/0 on the outside hire/Red/GMac thing.
