Doug Gottlieb (yes another thread)

I actually do not mind Doug as much as some here do, my only question / observation:

Why is he relegated to NIT coverage? They have him on their college hoops live show and have him as an expert throughout the whole year, bringing him on for Sports Center and anything else college hoops related - but when it is the biggest time of the year for College Hoops, he is relegated to the 'other tourney'.

Just find that strange and amusing at the same time

Because of the network that he works for has the NIT. Most of America gets NCAA coverage/analysis from the CBS studio crew even though most of them know little about college ball. I think CBS is actually milking this - the network bosses realize that people will stay tuned in order to hear what stupid thing Barkley is going to say next.

He was on espn before the cuse game yesterday and was extremely fair in his preview of the Cuse game. And even closed that it could end up being a very long day for kstate. He is very opinionated but he's not 1 sided like many believe.

This is the trouble with CBS having the NCAAT contract. They have nothing but scrubs. There is no doubt that ESPN has the best College Basketball coverage. Greg Anthony is very good on CBS. Everyone else blows. Thank god they brought in Lavin for this weekend, because he saved them from total failure. Jay Wright was no where near the presence on the panel that Lavin is.

We may not love all of them all the time, but Katz, Bilas, DG, Reese, Digger, Dakich are far better than freaking Charles Barkley for gods sake.

The most one sided analyst is Hubert Davis. ACC homer. Picks every ACC team and talks them up. Always picks against Big East teams. The bias is so obvious you'd nthink the suits at ESPN would address it with him.

Just to add to my thoughts - Hubert, DG, et al. We may not like their opinions all the time, but they respect the game and are passionate about it. Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley have no respect for college basketball whatsoever. They spend all their time minimizing the sport and the programs. That is not what people want to see. They want to see a celebration of the tournament and how much it means to these kids, programs, and fanbases.

Doug plays a character that agitates people. However, he knows his stuff (especially since he gives betting reco's). That character fits in certain programs and narratives and not in others.

Sometimes I think he's telling it like it is, but sometimes he's pulling a Cowherd and just saying things to get a reaction. I find him annoying (just as I do Cowherd) when he starts that crap. Bilas only tells it like it is, nothing more nothing less and that's why I have infinitely more respect for him.

I get that, and that's why I'll turn the station when he gets in that mode. I guess I have different expectations for media based on their background. I can accept Greenburg doing it moreso than a former D1 or pro athlete for instance. I completely agree with you about Cowherd, and I stopped listening to him entirely. ESPN would benefit from giving him a cohost to tell him how stupid he sounds and that repeating the same opinion 32 different ways doesn't validate it.

He plays both sides. He may have said that but also picked KSU yesterday on one of the shows. Did you like others also miss things he said last week? Those facts were posted here. He has am agenda.
