From the Duke Basketball Report (Feb.6):

Syracuse brings a lot to the league, but for all that, they’re not family. Wake and State are. We’ll even claim UNC.
We’d rather play State and Wake twice than Syracuse once.

For all the positives of joining the ACC, especially financially, don't think this is going to be a picnic -- at least for the next 25 years. SU is going from being a revered founding member of our current conference to a step-child. These guys still don't consider Georgia Tech a real member and they joined 30 years ago.

They're obviously scared of us.

They'd rather play State and Wake twice instead of us once? Yeah, that's a no brainer. Of course they'd rather rack up 4 wins over 1 loss.

FWIW, I watched the end of the Miami/Duke game last night, and the only thing I really took away from the game is the fact that Duke has the worst looking female study body in history. Not one good looking girl in the bunch. I feel bad for the guys at Duke. It's no wonder that their Lax players had to hire hookers for their parties.

Great I'm sure hearing the NC State fans whine about our "obnoxious" fans really warmed there hearts about us.

Sounds like A weak ploy to weaken those that they fear.
Sorry guys we have heard that weak BS before.

What the heck are they talking about with this "family" BS. Would we consider our current conference foes like UCONN, Georgetown, Pitt, and WVU FAMILY?! While we might have some respect for these programs, they are our rivals...our enemies. Guess what Duke...we're coming to Cameron Indoor for thanksgiving dinner next year, and we're not family. We're gonna eat your turkey, insult your wife, kick your cat, and then piss in your washing machine. Loser ivy league posers!!

I hate Duke!!!

Family is Southern thing in this regard.

Do not for one second discount the "DAMN YANKEE" factor. The fact that so many yankees live in the land of Dixie now is gonna burn their a$$es for 20 years. That is the family they are referring too, one which Syracuse can never join. Neither can BC, hey look who they made as our rivals....

What they don't understand, is feel the only good thing that ever came out of Duke was Ron Paul, other that that, I've loathed them for years. I could give a rats ass what they think. Wait till I go to Cameron half in the tank as Coleman and Noel throw in dunk after dunk.

SU is going from being a revered founding member of our current conference to a step-child.

The suits in Providence don't treat SU as a revered founding member. Program building on the backs of the football and now lax teams. Crappy basketball home schedules so SU can fill other arenas on weekend road trips.

One little problem with their family premis, I'm pretty sure if you ask Wake, NC State, or NC fans, they hate Duke just as much or more than we do. Duke is not loved in or out of their "family".

To use a tired term... heck of a dysfunctional family.

When we start winning conference titles will they consider us "family"? The stepchild doesn't usually finish first

I'm fine with not being family. I'd rather be more of a neighbor like Samuel L. Jackson in Lakeview Terrace.

What does family mean in this case?

If any ACC 'family' member lost 100 ACC games in a row, would Duke help them because they are 'family'? Of course not.

We're not joining the ACC to hang out at a barbeque twice a year and talk about old times. We're joining because they will pay us $15M a year and our BE 'family' will only pay us $6M.

Doesn't make sense since we get their ACC money AND stay a regional superpower far away from NC. We are going to be the top dog in the Northeast if UCONN continues to slide and BC stays irrelevant.

We'll still get our top recruits and we still have our fans. Who cares what people in North Carolina think? We don't recruit there, nor do we need them to think of us in some special way.

You can bet that we will recruit more in this region in the near future.

Good post Madbiker. Yes, we are the down east Yankee Orange, going to play in the red-neck Bible belt league.

Further, we will be placed on the future schedule of the remaining BE teams about as often as BC, UM and VT have been scheduled by us after they left BE in 2004. Who can name one BE team that has ever scheduled one these guys after they left?

I hope it all works out.

They're preemptively giving themselves a reason to dislike us since we are their northern equivalent in terms of education but in athletics we do everything better than they. Hoops, Football, Lax, etc.

They're having trouble selling out their hoops games in a tiny venue... yeah guess who's fan base will be filling every seat that they can't and be much louder in the process?

FWIW I would rather them not like us. They are Georgetown South to me.

I remember watching a Boston College Duke game the year they went into the ACC. Eight close calls in a row went Duke's way. It was the ACC's way of welcoming them into the league.

Syracuse is going to get that same treatment and maybe a bit worse since BC while not a bad basketball program back then was no where near the threat Cuse will be to the ACC status quo. Get ready for it.

Thank goodness that they feel that way - who would want to be related to a Dukie (other than maybe a Mountaineer) ????

Win. And nothing else will matter. Go in and dominate that conference is the answer.

44cuse

If we become their Daddy, will we be family?

That is just such a load of BS!! As far as the fanbase in N. Carolina is concerned, Duke hates Carolina, Carolina hates Duke and NC State hates both Duke and Carolina. As far as Wake is concerned, well they are like an odd family member. The ACC schools situated in the Triangle think everything is about them. Swofford and the ACC changed the scheduling to increase attendance. Increase $$$$.

I love it when NY'ers call southerners rednecks or trailer trash. Upstate NY is just as full of both. The only difference is the accent.

You're dead on. The fans of these schools hate each other as much as we 'Cuse fans hate G'town.

Can you imagine any Orange fan calling G'town family...completely ridiculous.
