Syracuse at Duke
Saturday, April 19, 2025 | 2:00 p.m.

TV: ACC Network | Chris Cotter, Quint Kessenich
Radio: TK99 (99.5 FM) / WAER (88.3 FM)

This game really looks like a mismatch in Cuse favor. Duke has yet to beat any top 10 teams - best wins are Richmond and Michigan and they just squeaked thru those games. I'm looking for Cuse to really run up the score which is great - I really don't like Duke

It certainly looks like Duke should most likely beat UVA the week after and therefore get the final spot in the ACC tourney. Hard to believe, but it looks like UVA will miss the tourney and end their season in April.

I think SU is cleary the better team but the question is can you get a 60 min perfromance out of them or close to that. The concern in this type of game is two fold.

1. SU plays a similar game to what they did vs UNC last year. A lead but sloppy and the game turns into a rock fight and the 2nd half is either hanging on for dear life or in a back forth battle.

2. You get a redux from Harvard and Gate, SU gets up a good amount and then just gets disinterested and starts turning it over, taking bad shots, penalties etc.

I worry more about scenario 2 playing out on Sat though I could see a rock fight as well as Duke's D is pretty good when it's on and SU has shown a complete inability to limit penalties.

If Hiltz is healthy ( don't believe his injury is serious) and McCool rebounds as we expect him to I think SU is a heavy favorite as I noted but SU hasn't exactly shined on the road on this year save for Utah. I don't expect a ND repeat but would be a nice sign if SU could build a decent 1st half lead and then just trades goals in the 2nd half. I do think SU matches up pretty well defensively with Duke and Duke while solid at the specialty spots doesn't have a Naso this year.

Does there seem to be a good chance Thomson is back on Saturday or still to early in the week to know? I'm intrigued how they will incorporate him into the offense, seems logical that it would be at midfield unless they opt to rotate him and Anderson some?

The big question for me is how Syracuse defends Andrew McAdory. In the ACC tournament last year, Duke moved him to attack and Syracuse had absolutely no answers as he finished with five goals. They could not match his speed and they seemed totally unprepared for him being at attack. Now this year is different as Syracuse won't have to contend with guys like Brennan O'Neil, Dyson Williams and Josh Zawada. But I am not sure which defender could match him feet for feet.

It looks like last week he lined up at attack against UNC, but I think Duke has tried different combos at attack seemingly every game (mostly because the offense is struggling). I am guessing Riley Figuerias will match up with Duke's leading scorer (by a fair bit) in Eric Malever. And while Kucynszcki and Caccamo have been solid in defense, they aren't really known for their speed. Syracuse will have to prepare for multiple lineups Duke could throw out there.

I didn't see the game but when you look at the stats from Saturday, the only significant discrepancy was saves. McCool has been fantastic in all but two games - but when he's off Gait needs to make a switch immediately because if he's not seeing the ball well by the second quarter, it doesn't seem he's going to flip a switch.

If we had beaten Cornell and one against Duke or UNC, I felt like we could potentially could avoid Army...I'd rather play the 2022 Maryland squad than Army at home Sunday evening in the opening round.

Just prepare yourself for Army now, it's gonna be the matchup barring something crazy or one of the two schools not making it. SU will win enough to get a seed and Army will pull an Army and lose in the conf tournament and will get sent to the Dome. Even if Army wins out at this point they will likely make them the 8 seed and send SU to West Point (assuming SU doesn't win the ACC tourney). They will do everything possible to make this matchup happen.

Only two real scenarios where SU and ARmy aren't matched up. If both teams win out they probably wont be matched up but even then it's still a possibility. Army loses in the conf tourney early again and there's an upset in the B10 or Ivy tourney and they get bumped out.

I just really want no part of Army on Sunday night. Again.

Feel like there is a general tail between our legs attitude about the team after one game. We just crushed ND folks. Our confidence should not be in the toilet after losing to Cornell. It’s hard to win every game. Can’t let the haters and trolls control the narrative with this team. Now apparently Mr. Foy on his podcast is also buying into the idea that we can’t play outside of the cozy dome. Screw that. We will take it to Duke this weekend and prove these idiots wrong.

Why are we scared of a team that lost to BU and barely beat Navy last week?? This army cowardice has to stop. We can beat anyone, including Army.

I don't think anyone is scared of Army, despite our recent struggles against them SU has historically dominated the matchup. That said they are not a great matchup for Syracuse and there a team I think most would prefer to avoid until at least the quarters.

In their three game win streak against us, one was a close game where we had some golden opportunities to close it out, and the previous two were two cuse teams that had some serious flaws in general. I just think we do not have enough evidence there to say it is a bad matchup. Personally I am more scared of having to play Harvard again early.

I recommend anything Mr. Foy says about Syracuse be taken with a grain of salt (pun intended). If you look at his comments over the last few years he's generally not been a fan of our team. This year he went so far as to rate us #2 pre-season but when we stumbled against Maryland and Harvard he acted like a petulant child who didn't get his way and downgraded us to #13 for multiple weeks when IL's media poll had us about 7 or 8. I think the fear we have, and it isn't just about potentially playing Army, is that we don't know which team is going to come out of the locker room and play on any given game day. And if it's good (e.g., Notre Dame game) will it be for four quarters. I listened to a lot of the Cornell game on the radio feed and Kyle Fetterly consistently wondered where the effort was; that the Cornell team was out efforting us throughout the game. While the stats didn't show that, the stats don't show when we're beaten to the backup on our missed shot.

Some slightly off placements in the pols in a wide open year like this is whatever. I just hate the narrative that it is the outdoor conditions that explain these losses. Our worst game by far this season is still Harvard in the cozy 70 degree dome. Last year we lost two games in the cozy dome to MD and Army, and did not get a high quality win until we played Hopkins in the pouring rain. It is just total nonsense. Our two outdoor rainy games were against the #1 and #3 team in the nation. Isn't that a much better explanation for the losses than the fact that it was raining??

Every team is inconsistent. It is not a phenomenon unique to Cuse. How did MD fans feel losing to Michigan and Rutgers? Or ND after the Cuse game? Or Duke getting blown out by Denver? It is damn hard to play consistently quality lacrosse for 4 quarters against top teams week in and week out. In recent games we have had more good quarters than bad. I was frustrated by the Cornell game but it seems like people are acting like that is how we always play and disregarding our good performances this season.

I’m hoping they go back to having the players focus on playing. Less player interviews and more focus on lax.
