Dungey is the whole team

I think Custis made that next leap forward tonight. He looks like a gamer however the other receivers need to step up. We really miss Erv Phillips. It’s interesting the recruits that were Shafers are the ones who have contributed most so far from my view. Where are all these top notch guys ready to play? Trill Williams? Hendrix?

Babers opening statement sort of tells it all re: talent. Agree with the OP. Dungey is the team.

This is less about DeVito and more about Dungey. Don’t get it twisted. One poster compared him to Austin Wilson? Ridiculous. If you can’t look at DeVito and say “he’s got it” you don’t know what you’re looking at. DeVito, isn’t ready. But he’s got the tools.

He goes we go. Plain and simple. Everything else is irrelevant. Defense will come and go. Minimal athletes at WR, RB, and O line.

Defense looks to have some parts and pieces but at some point you have to look at the DC.

Devito? I don’t want to hear a peep until Dungey gets hurt or graduates but TD looked like Austin Wilson to me. Not saying he won’t get better but Dungey is beyond light years better than TD right now. In addition the whole team slumped when Dungey was taken out. Babers getting too cute fur his own good
Thought Custis looked pretty darn good, the O line blocked well. The D......no comment.

Dungey is a better passer than what he showed today (yesterday). The receivers as a group didn't help his numbers. He gets it done.

Realize this is orange colored glasses, first game, so many good players out there, so many games to be played. However, tough to question the case can be made that he's the best player in college football.

Agree 100%. You also can’t help but get slightly concerned that we’re still all Dungey in year 3.

Oh absolutely because better teams will do a better job of controlling Dungey running the ball and make it Custis’ life a lot more difficult as well.

The one thing I will say about Dungey from the minute he took the field 3 years ago he took over the team. As a freshman with no RS. You can’t teach that just can’t. His leadership is natural, rare breed

Well I don't know about that... Custis and Neal bother bailed Dungey out on really bad throws with one handed catches. Custis was awesome.

But let needs to go... He was targeted a ton and didn't have a single catch

I missed the P5 part as in another thread someone was talking just ACC, where yes we have the worst current starters. That doesn’t mean the guys behind them won’t be starters by year end. Why would we go 3-9 when we have one of the best players in the entire conference? Now that is silly.

Early last year everyone was complaining that our receivers were terrible and that no one was going to be able to replace AET. Not sure how we’re writing everyone off after one game.

ED is like the Crocodile Hunter, sooner or later taking all those chances is going to get you hurt.

That never happened. Ishmael and Erv had played a ton prior and made big plays. None of our WRs this year have done anything whatsoever until Custis last night.

If Austin Wilson were 5-11, 170 pounds.

I laughed when I looked up Devito's height on suathletics and he's listed at 6-2. Come on, now. Kid is tiny. Dungey looks like his daddy.

We all overreact in game threads but I think most here felt Ishmael was a really solid target and that Erv was a really nice fit in the slot. Not being able to replace AET was simply a reality -- we didn't really replace him from a big play perspective. Ishmael was great but had a 12.8 average per catch (3 yards less than Amba) and half as many TDs. Erv is playing a different roll but he was around 10 per catch and scored just 4 TDs all season. They combined for 11 TDs -- Amba had 15 by himself. that was a legit concern that didn't mean Ish and Erv weren't really solid players for us.

Then

Then people were being dumb. Those 2 alone had over 200 career catches and 19 TDs coming into last year. Imagine every player on the roster combined coming into this year doesn't get to half of that.

He is our Russell Westbrook to cross sports for a minute. His play is about the ball being in his hands run or pass most of the time. I'm not sure he could be that effective and have the impact he does if limited to a lesser role as a QB. That is for better or worse but who he is. So to some degree he dictates a lot of that being the case.

His value as an emotional leader surpasses even what he produces though. I think because he is what he is, it makes it extremely difficult to really get a complete read on other skill players sometimes. He is a blast to watch and we are lucky to have hi .

The Westbrook comparison is an interesting one b/c he is such a massive part of not only our offense but our whole team. I know it's hard to really speak to his impact on the defense and that doesn't really make sense. But that leadership intangible is real and he clearly excels in that department.

However, it's a bit different than westbrook b/c so many other guys are getting touches and opportunities. Now Dungey didn't throw the ball well, to be fair to the WRs, but Neal got 29 carries, Strickland 11 and we threw the ball 28 times (we're normally over 30). There are ample opportunities for folks to step up in that scenario.

But all the people today saying everything sucks aren’t being stupid?

Well we have no rbs or wrs that have ever accomplished anything of note or enough to at least say they aren't the worst collection of skill players in the conference.

I'd like to see the youngsters get major run to see where or WRs stand. It just seems implausible that with two years of WR recruits we don't have more ability/production than what we saw from Butler and Riley. If that is the case then so be it and it doesn't bode well for us but that just doesn't seem possible.

No!

Whomever said that isn't very bright. We had two established WRs returning. They had close to 150 combined catches the year before. This year we have two upperclassmen who haven't shown much in their first few years here. Last year they combined for just over 40 catches. Not one game, more like 2 dozen.

That is the best description of the two QB's I've seen posted. No doubt TD's throwing ability is impressive. The rest of the sputtering was freshman jitters and poor execution. I'm FAR more concerned about:

- our pass protection (mediocre for both QBs, mitigated because of ED's scrambling ability);
- our pass coverage (240 yards for Eskridge - not a good sign);
- our pass rush (Wassink was not impressive, but he connected on several chunk plays because he had time to let routes mature and watch Eskridge blow past our cover guys);
- our WR corps (a one man show begging for an infusion of young talent);
- our running game (150 yards total for all RB's. That's barely P5 level, although Neal looked decent, and our OL did open up some holes for TD's in the RZ - finally);

Their QB was pretty wild most of the game. No idea how he locked in for like 3 series.
