Don't take MTSU lightly like SDS overlooked FGCU

Really sick of scrubs on the bench drawing attention to themselves with these stupid acts. Most of the nation knows Monmouth for how it's scrubs act on the bench, not for how the team plays. Ridiculous. It has little to do with celebrating the team's success, and much to do with playing for the cameras.

Glad our guys don't do this. I doubt Boeheim would go for that.

Um, you do know that guy was their starting guard, right?
(correction - he came off the bench, but did indeed play in every game, scored 11 against SDSU)

PS - the majority of this stuff happened against GEORGETOWN. :D

(although the .gif above was from SDSU)

If you're not on board with that, then I don't know what to tell ya. :noidea:

It's a game. They are kids.

I go to FGCU and went to many games back then and do now. None of those guys in this gif were starters.

And to the original poster... when you're in your second season of being eligible to play in D1 tournaments and you shock the basketball world like these guys did, you're allowed to celebrate a little. What Monmouth does is completely different.

I assumed he was because he had his warmup off. Still it triggered my thoughts and regardless of that being a perfect example or not, the point stands.

Kids have always played college hoops. Being "kids" doesn't excuse anything here.

Look, I have no problem with most things: I enjoyed the Fab Five's antics. From our own perspective I loved John Wallace's yapping, loved Devendorf...the difference is those guys did it on the court and it was part of what gave them an edge.

I'm taking issue with scrubs who don't even get into the game drawing attention to themselves with elaborate and ridiculous celebrations that have little to do with cheering on their teammates and are more about getting some attention for themselves. It's dumb and selfish, and actually very corny. If your warmup doesn't come off, you have no business doing all that. I'll add the Dayton scrubs standing up and talking crap to Cooney after he fouled the shooter, while their team trailed by 20 with 4-5 minutes to go as another example of scrubs not knowing how to act.

Don't you remember McNabb and crew on the bench during the 96 run?

Not really. I remember them copying the thing from Major League after made FT's. Either they were significantly more low key and team focused about it, or maybe the cameras just paid less attention to them.

I'm sort of on-board with this. There are times when it's funny, and awesome, but it seems very choreographed now and practiced. It's sort of lame. It seems less like an emotional response (which is awesome) and more about, now it's our time to shine! We're going to do a dance! Like they're cheerleaders just waiting for their version of a timeout - if that makes sense.

With Monmouth, I literally have no idea what they're doing most of the time. They're all falling down, jumping over each other, catching a fish, throwing it back, and then boarding a plane? On a made free throw? What is that. It's stupid. Again, there are plenty of times it's great, but usually when it seems genuine (whether it is or not). I'm sure they're happy and all, but it's about as fantastic as those lame Maryland "flash mobs."

I do laugh at the fisting one still. lol

They were often the focus of the cameras. They had a couple of "routines".

OK, my bad.
I knew he actually played, and scored 11 points against SDSU - so he's not a scrub, was more my point.

Totally agree with your last point too.
NOBODY expected what they did - which wasn't *just* upset those teams, but do it in a NBA Jam ooops and 3's fiesta that was some of the most entertaining tournament hoops I've ever watched.

IF your warmup doesn't come off - WHAT ELSE IS THERE??
You're a cheerleader. Period.
Root for the team, as hard as you can.

You want them to stand still and politely golf-clap or something?
(actually, THAT would be hysterical for the bench to do. :D)

Were you around in 1996? Our bench players (including McNabb) had some very unique celebrations.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill for these kids and they're enjoying it. What's wrong with that?

Wasn't one of the routines that rhythmic leg crossing?

If the guys that are actually playing are fine with this stuff (and I would assume they are or it wouldn't happen), I don't see any reason why I would care.

I thought I said this already, but.....this garbage looks and feels less like it has very little to do with rooting for your team and genuine emotion and more like "look at me"! You're a bench scrub, root for your team and stop trying to get on camera with stupid choreographed routines.

Yeah, I think the divide is the choreography. I don't feel like Monmouth is in the game, they are just waiting for a basket so they can have a dance party. They miss half of the next play because the routine takes 10 seconds to complete. I don't particularly mind either way, I just think Monmouth is a plague, and benches in general seem to be getting more and more like them. I don't find it overly bothersome at the moment. Just seems to be heading that way.

Has anyone watched a Monmouth game? I've only seen a few, but the announcers spend too much time trying to decipher what the bench is doing. It's annoying. One out of every five times they can guess the routine - most make no sense. I'm throwing a bomb to a guy who is going to catch it, hand it off, we're all going to get blown up, get up, leap-frog someone else, throw the bomb back that already exploded, and then start a lawn mower!!!!! I don't think they really care they made a three.

It is strange though, because I love when the benches are involved...hopping around. So, who knows...just know I dislike Monmouth.

You sound fun.

Screwing around on the bench, in the dugout, on the sidelines is a fundamental, time-honored aspect of all sports (you would know if you ever played). Stupid handshakes, chants, choreographed bits -- they're all part of the bonding process. By they way, these "bench scrubs" (another term only used by non-athletes) aren't getting a free ride and devote a lot of time and energy to the program. God forbid the camera catch them having fun for 20 seconds over the course of the game. I hate to break it to you, but it's a very telling and sad sign when other people enjoying themselves bothers you.

Also, the exclamation point goes inside the quotes if it's part of the quotation.

Amazing how offended you got and how personally you took this. I don't like it. Why would you get all up in your feelings about that?

Since you did though...I don't think I like you either.

I wasn't offended in the least. Apparently your reading comprehension is as poor as your writing ability. Don't confuse someone putting your dull, tired argument to bed with someone being "offended."

1. Amazing how personal you took this. I don't like the celebrations. Why would that upset you?

2. I've played sports my whole life, and "scrubs" was always a common term for, well..."scrubs". Terrible attempt at making a point. Maybe you were always a bench scrub and were offended? If so, I don't apologize. Get over it.

3. I don't like the celebrations. They're stupid. SMH at you trying to read so deeply into that. "You sound fun".

4. Oh, so you're "that guy" too? Wow, you really got all up in your feelings here. LMAO!

5. I still don't like the stupid celebrations. Just my opinion. Try not to cry this time.

Christophe didnt start but he was legit. He transferred to Chaminade (how about that?! FGCU to Hawaii) and you may remember the game he scored about 40 in the maui invitational. IIRC, he had a really bad back and could barely move by then.

This is when Christope turned into the drunk pirate.

Doubling down on being wrong isn't helping your case. But keep trying! Desperately falling all over yourself to say I took something "personally" when you are the only one making personal comments isn't helping yourself.

No, you never played sports (and stumbling around a YMCA gym doesn't count). And no "scrubs" is not how bench players are referred to in any level of sports by anyone who plays. Don't say things that are easily disproven. (Or prove me wrong, find me three instances online of players or coaches referring to the bench players as scrubs.)

Here's a tip if you want to sound like you know what you're talking about: Don't assume someone who disagrees with you is "upset" or "crying." You realize that makes you look weak, yes? All that does is make it sound like you have no faith in your argument because you can't discuss it like a rational human. (And all the LMAOs and SMHs in the world aren't helping you.)

I don't mind that you don't like celebrations. I get the impression maybe you got left out of a lot of them as a kid. Sounds like that scarred you.

Your first line of your first post made it about me. Didn't read this one beyond your first two lines. I don't like stupid celebrations by the bench scrubs. Get off my nuts and get over it, weirdo.
