Saw on one of the former sites that Austin Wilson may enroll early, but it's not set in stone yet.. Would be huge for both him and Zach Allen (who I believe is already set to enroll early) to get in for the Spring practice. I think it'd really play to our advantage to have these guys in the S&C circuit from Spring to Fall and digesting the playbook before we even hit fall practice. This is really their only option if they hope to start for this football team next year. I think the results of their early enrollment will allow us to choose who is more ready come fall and to redshirt the other. I'm excited for the prospects of both these recruits. Wilson appears to be modeled similarly to Nassib, whereas, Allen appears to be more like a Troy Nunes.. I think I'd take either as our starter without much complaint if they can live up to either of those..

It's going to be Loeb next season.
Many have said the same, but I never said they were going to start next season in my post. I said that I'd take either as a starter, but never really meant that it would be next season. If Loeb is more prepared to lead us to victories, I'm behind that fully. That said, he has the exact same amount of PT as these two true freshman will have at this level. So I'm not fully sold that he can handle it any better than either of these guys. Either way, I'd assume that we're not going to have the luxury of RS both these guys, so one would have to be slated as a backup.

What I find remarkable is there is no mention of a guy who has the size and athleticism of Donavan McNabb, will have a season of actually being on the field and playing in this offense, and regarded as perhaps the best athlete on the team. Can Ashton throw the ball long with accuracy, is the only thing in question? If he can, this is no longer a discussion.

I left him out on purpose. Last thing we need is another Ashton at QB thread. That's been debated many times already. I more was looking to get everyone's impression of the impact that enrolling early could have on their development prior to the fall practice. We haven't seen Ashton throw short or long yet, so as of this point, it's not even a discussion point.

It gives them a chance to get in the discussion. They will have an opportunity to show what they bring to the table.

Their lack of experience and familarity with the system is going to make it really hard for them but if no one else emerges as a strong candidate, the staff might opt to go with a young talent with more upside.

If Loeb plays well this spring, the job is his. If not...anything can happen. It should be really interesting to see what happens. Can't remember a spring where so many players will be competing for a single starting postion.

It could potentially be a 6 person contest between Loeb, Kinder, Hunt, Broyld, Allen and Wilson. I hope spring football is open again. I would love to watch these guys compete head to head.

It will not be Loeb or Broyd next year at qb. It will be Zachary.
Very, very doubtful. Loeb is going to be penciled in as #1 during spring camp, as OrangemanPD said. It's going to take quite an effort from Allen to dethrone him. If Allen is somehow genius enough to learn the playbook better than Loeb in 6 months, all the power to him but Loeb has been in the system for 4 years.

People need to temper expectations and realize that Allen isn't going to waltz in here and be a superstar. How many NFL QBs were 4 year starters (and didn't redshirt)?

He likely won't, but your question is somewhat a trick.. Generally a QB who starts day 1 is too talented to stay for Year 4!

Good catch. But the point stands, how many QBs came in and started from their first year for a BCS school.

Way too many people on schollie playing QB. We should have three at most.

Take a look at other schools, my friend. We have what, twice the number of scholarship players at QB? Sheesh.
Is there something else we don't have enough of?

We have 4 scholie QB's this year and 5 maybe 4 next.

1 QB in each recruiting class isn't too many.

I think some college coaches would disagree with you. Coach Briles at Baylor only has three QB on scholarship at a time. I believe the same is true for Coach Patterson at TCU. I know this because QB has become a topic recently as related to Casey Pachall's recent DUI/DWI arrest last week.

FSU currently has 8 QB's in the roster. 5 of them on scholarship.

I would say it's only too many if you don't have a scholarship to give out when you need one.

As for next year, who knows how many we'll have. QBs change position all the time, especially when they get recruited over.

Agreed. I'd have 5. Certainly no less than 4.

The answer to me is yes and no. No, I don't think you want 5 or 6 guys competing for a starting spot. Simply not enough snaps to go around and truly evaluate all six. But, if you have a completely vacant spot at QB and you have a history of struggling to field a competent QB, then I think you have to try and remedy that with numbers. So bringing in a QB per class and a even a couple in the occasional class is absolutely worthwhile -- the numbers game will get worked out with kids moving positions and/or transferring.

A couple points here:

1) To your second point -- I'm not sure but aren't Rivers, Brees and P. Manning three guys who started from Day 1 and stayed four years? And there are certainly freshman who do play from Day 1 like Barkley and Jimmy Clausen and Aaron Murray, if memory serves. I absolutely get and agree with your point (that it's unusual for a frosh to start from Day 1), but it's worth noting that it's not exactly unheardof.

2) On your first point, I tend to agree on the notion that Loeb is the odds on starter. What I would guess is that Loeb starts and whomever is deemed the "QB of the Future" will get some snaps and some series as the year goes along. But I would suggest that if Loeb is simply starting b/c he's experienced and a kid like Allen (or fill in the blank with another QB's name) is truly more gifted and physically ready to play, there should be some effort made to get that kid on the field. They simply don't have time to waste. I'm not saying rush a kid onto the field, but if you truly have a kid with excellent physical gifts and smarts, there should be some effort made to get him on the field.
