East West Shrine Bowl: Jan 30, 8 PM

Oronde Gadsden II, TE, Syracuse

One of the best players at the Shrine Bowl, Oronde Gadsden II showed why he is viewed as such a dynamic threat.

No matter the matchup, the Syracuse tight end was getting open. He was creating constant separation with his routes, using his frame to shield off defenders, and catching the ball through contact.

Gadsden Jr. also showed off some of his speed, using it to make himself a more open target when his quarterbacks needed him the most.

It was just another day of great receiving production for the star tight end. Gadsden is one of the best pure receiving talents at his position, if not in the entire draft. He is a trusted weapon for his quarterbacks and continues to show that he can beat any competition lined up against him.

If Gadsden replicates this production all week, he will prove once again to the wider football community that he is a valuable asset as a pure pass-catcher.

Oronde Gadsden II, Tight End – Syracuse (East Team)

The Syracuse Orange had a number of players stand out on the first day of practice. However, it’s hard not to put Oronde Gadsden II on this list. The Syracuse tight end surprised many when he weighed in at 247 pounds; and, given his quickness on the field, it’s hard to blame them.

Gadsden is a proficient route-runner who glides across the field. Yet his soft hands and awareness make him an instant receiving threat.

The tight end made multiple adjustments during practice, and is a true unicorn at the position. His blocking may take time to get up to speed at an NFL-level, but it’s hard to ignore the talent on display.

Fadil Diggs, Edge – Syracuse (East Team)

Perhaps out of nowhere, Syracuse Orange Edge Fadil Diggs showed he was a dominant force on the first day at the Shrine Bowl.

The ‘Cuse prospect showed an endless motor in Saturday’s practice, as well as a plethora of moves to attack opposing offensive linemen. Diggs was especially impressive during live reps, where he was consistently in the backfield. Shrine Bowl’s Owen Riese (AD of college scouting) named Diggs as a prospect to watch this week, and it’s hard to say he’s wrong with reps like these.

That is what Dart is all about, Diggs who played out of position all year for the team. When we lost 4 DL for the year and had to go to 3 Down Lineman, he never complained, just did what DRob needed from him and won games.

The East-West Shrine Bowl continued Sunday in Frisco, TX, with the second practice session leading up to Thursday’s game.

Here are four players who made positive impressions.

TE Oronde Gadsden II, Syracuse

The Chargers need more production from their tight ends in the passing game. Gadsden brings a wide receiver skillset to the tight end position. For his size, at 6-foot-2 and 247 pounds, he is a smooth mover with good foot quickness and explosive in and out of his routes. Gadsden caught everything thrown at him, reeling in the football with his long wingspan and strong hands. He led all tight ends nationally with 969 yards receiving.

WR Jackson Meeks, Syracuse

The wide receiver room needs some retooling this offseason. The Chargers should look to add a true No. 1 wideout, but additional depth is also a must. Meeks raised eyebrows by consistently getting open with sharpness in his routes and playing physical. He made a nice catch through a defensive pass interference penalty deep down the sideline. Meeks only had 10 catches for 131 yards during his time with Georgia, and amassed 78 catches for 1,021 yards, and seven catches in one season with Syracuse.

Did Gadsden shrink to 6’2”?

They have OG listed as 6042 in official height. I believe that is 6'4.2"?
The final number is eighths.

Height
  • Reported as a four-digit number, with the first digit representing feet, the next two representing inches, and the last representing eighths of an inch
  • For example, 6013 represents 6 feet, 1 3/8 inches

Ok, so 6'4 1/4" official height

Day 2 notes

Quarterbacks:

Kyle McCord is clearly the best quarterback here but Cam Miller made some real throws today. As I said last time, he’s overachiever vibes but just executing the easy stuff, which not everybody does during this event, he thrived.

Wide Receivers:

KeAndre Lambert-Smith deserves his flowers. He’s in that Jahan Dotson mold but he made some plays to really high point the ball. Great to see a guy like him make tough catches.

Thought Jackson Meeks had some moments. Doesn’t look slow either.

Tight End:

The Syracuse guys are standing out. This tight end is something. He’s a lump of clay and if he really figures it out… look out.

Defensive Line:

Syracuse is the theme.

Syracuse EDGE Fadil Diggs may have murdered Cam Miller if he could hit the QB in these drills. He is having a MONSTER day. #ShrineBowl

Someone tell me this isn’t all an orange colored glasses echo chamber lol. Let’s take a step back, OG was the only player that throughout his career you can be close to 100% confident was actually getting drafted. The more players drafted and of course producing in the NFL is HUGE for the program. It’s a sign that our development, strength, and conditioning program is very legit.
