as their new HC?

Seems like an odd move for Martin, but he's been pulling in good talent at Cal, and would likely make the Yellow Jackets more competitive in the ACC.

Would make NO SENSE to go from Cal to Ga Tech. Only advantage for Tech is They are in a better conference. But then that really isn't an advantage for him.

From a very good source they were targeting Bryce Drew but Vandy got to him first.

Its hard to imagine someone would pick Vandy over Gtech.

yes and no. I get what you're saying but Vandy for it's limitations is a phenomenal school school -- a gorgeous school -- and located in a pretty cool city. I mean, you do have something to sell there (not saying you don't at GT, just pointing out that I'm not sure it's a crazy choice).

It's not at all for many reasons.

I dunno, potential for an easy road to be #2 in a terrible conference, with three chances to beat UK and be #1, or play in a real league and scrap just to stay in the middle of the pack?

I could see Vanderbilt as more attractive for that reason; throw in the fact that they're a really good school and it'd be a good situation for the right coach.

Vandy is a really tough school to get kids into, I'm not saying Gtech is Carolina, but they have some history, a new arena, and are in a great state for hs bball.

GA Tech isn't that easy to get into either. It also has a very small number of majors.
It is in a recruiting hotbed in the best conference in the land.
The conference, and it's collection of opposing coaches, could be daunting to an up-and-comer. $$ could also be a factor... GA Tech will be paying for 3 head coaches next year... perhaps they couldn't outbid Vandy.

Crazy that he will somehow upgrade himself into a better conference (not totally sold on better job). He stinks at Memphis. 2 tourney wins in 7 years and has missed the last 2.

guy can recruit but not coach. Not a great hire by GT. They should definitely have gone after a lower level school coach who has overachieved. What about Ron Hunter at GSU

Georgia Tech is targeting Josh Pastner of Memphis for its head-coaching vacancy, and a deal could be done by the end of Friday, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.

Pastner has served as the Tigers’ head coach over the last seven seasons after succeeding John Calipari in 2009. During that time, he has accumulated a 167-73 record.

Memphis reached the NIT in Pastner’s first season and made the NCAA tournament in the next four. In 2013 and 2014, the program advanced to the round of 32.

The Tigers have missed the postseason each of the last two years, and this past season they finished 19-15. It was Pastner’s lowest single-season winning percentage as a head coach.

Partner, who is 38 years old, played at Arizona from 1996-2000, winning a national title in 1998. He was an assistant for the Wildcats from 2002-08 before spending one year on Calipari’s staff at Memphis.

Georgia Tech fired Brian Gregory last month after finishing 21-15 and lost in the NIT quarterfinals. The Yellow Jackets haven’t made the NCAA tournament since the 2009-10 season.

It doesn't take a good source to realize that Bryce Drew would be a hot commodity for almost all mid tier P5 schools.

Sounds like Pastner-GT is a done deal. And the rest of the ACC is quite happy.

Firing Gregory and hiring Pastner is so dumb. This guy is on the hot seat at Memphis. Gregory had this team going up this year. Their schedule early killed them in ACC play.

Pastner is not going to make them a consistent NCAA team. Georgia Tech should have kept Gregory let him sink or swim and then if he failed next year go after Mark Price. Mark Price wasn't going to bail on Charlotte after 1 year.

Whoever their coach, they are in trouble next year. Almost all of their top players are gone. Mitchell, Georges-Hunt, Jacobs, White--done.
