While there is much discussion regarding our own attendance problems; as I watch games night after night, attendance is a problem everywhere not the SEC, the big house, or Oregon. GT has a 60-70% filled stadium tonight on primetime against a conference foe. I blame it on cost of attendance, beautiful flat screen tvs, and a brew being 20 feet away in your frig. This is also impacting the NFL. Unfortunately, its a better experience for some, though I will always prefer my experience and view from section 115 in the dome.

It's not really a problem because television revenue is at an all-time high. Attendance is not that important to the bottom line. Stadiums are just large television studios.

Let's see, $30/tkt times 40,000 is $1.2 mm per game, plus concessions, etc. 5 games is $6 mm plus concessions, etc., or 25% or so of what we get from the ACC. I would call that reasonably important opportunity revenue.

I agree, attendance is imperative for revenue

all the more reason to make the game experience more fun and make you miss less of what you enjoy at home.. highlights, scores, etc. and give you things you cant get at home, better half time shows, give aways, etc..

I agree upperdeck, but the convenience of being home watching your 55 inch hd tv with a beer at your fingertips in the comfort of your own mancave is a great argument over 3 hrs of traffic, overpriced food and drink, and being able to see any other current game is tough to argue with. I personally love the on campus gameday environment and experience.

This is where the dome upgrade can help tremendously. I know that the possibility of losing tailgating space around the dome is bad for some fans, a lot of which visit this board (myself included). But I guess I envision an environment more like some of the newer sports complexes like PNC Park/Heinz Field or Great American Ballpark.

Mixed use buildings around the dome, with garage or below grade parking, would allow the university to get the highest and best use out of the land around the dome, while maintaining ample parking for game days. Ideally, if a hotel is part of the dome upgrade, underground or garage parking attached to the dome so you could park and get inside without even having to walk in the rain.

Wide concourses, various improved concessions, gathering areas, and flat panel TV's throughout the interior of the dome with the availability of other games (or scores at least) would encourage people to get there early and socialize. It also gives casual fans who may not be diehard Cuse fans other stuff to do inside the stadium. A blend of the "at-home" experience of multiple games and easily available good food/drinks, combined with the social part of in-person attendance is what will get fence sitters to come to games.

Is it the "traditional college experience?" No. But I think, based on my experience at numerous baseball and football stadiums in the last 10 years, it's what a lot of people want out of game day. It's about more than just the game. Maybe the game is a minor part of it for some of them. I've seen a lot of people at Heinz Field, PNC Park, Great American Ballpark, M&T Bank Stadium, etc. milling around the concourses eating Primanti Bros. or Boog's BBQ and watching the game on TV with a bunch of friends. To me, that's okay as long they are there and having fun. At least they chose to come to the stadium instead of sitting at home in front of their TV.

What most people over 40 consider the traditional gameday experience is probably over, other than at the football factories. SU is competing with pro sports and ESPN for entertainment dollars. There needs to be more to the experience to compete with every game being on TV. The opportunity to do that is in front of SU if they do it right. People make day trips to Destiny. Make the Dome more fun before, during, and after the game (even beyond winning football games), and more people will come on a regular basis.

Syr95 interesting points and most are valid but I think you still need the traditional college sights. I'm all for wider concourses but I stop short of making a FB game like a trip to the mall.

Doesn't the visiting team receive a 6 figure paycheck for showing up?

I think that's only certain (not all) non-conference opponents, but others may know more. In any event, the same may hold true in reverse on the road.

No doubt, HD television has hampered attendance at almost all sporting events.
But when SU football does begin to win again, the fans will come out.

A good correlation is the KC Royals, who had one winning season in 18 years from 1995-2012. But they were good in 2013, very good in 2014, and World Series Champs in 2015. They ranked 22nd to 29th in MLB attendance every year the last 20 years, until THIS YEAR, when they jumped to 10th. They have a nice facility (Kauffman Stadium) that was redone about 10 years ago for $250MM. Now it is one of the top 10-12 places to see a ballgame. So, as you can see, the Royals share some similarities to SU (solid/not stellar histories, market size=small, revamped home facility, 15+ years of poor on-field results).

But the true test will be can the Royals management help keep the fans coming even when they aren't in first place or World Series favorites. Because that level prosperity does not come often, unless you are a crown-jewel franchise like the Yankees, Patriot or even Packers.

SU will get it's winning mojo back someday, and by then, hopefully our new AD will have enhanced/perfected the in-game experience at the (newly remodeled) Dome. Because, as much as I love SU football, we are very likely to have a more 4-7 win seasons than 9-12 win campaigns. Winning helps. It IS the most important factor. But it is NOT the only factor.

OP, you need to add Nebraska to your list. They just sold out like their one billionth consecutive time.

For you and for me, that's true. If we want the students and people under 30 to come to games, I think a lot of them want it to be like a trip to the mall. Things have changed, for better or for worse.

It would be different if SU could consistently win 9+ games a year. That has really never been the case though and in today's college landscape, and playing in the ACC, I think its even less likely to happen in the future.

They are the only show in town, people in Nebraska's lives revolve around Cornhusker football.

This. See the Cleveland Indians, for an example of when the on-field performance drops off for an extended period. Even in seasons when they are competitive now, they don't draw very well.

15 years of almost continuous suck has shed the casual, the bandwagon and the economy has done the rest with high paying jobs leaving the area. Winning will cure the disease...but I fear 40-45k is the new 50k.

i think they just need to figure out how to get 30K of good bball seats and get the fball back to 40K. what are at for season ticket sales for bball?

So here is my experience this week... I meet with a group of customers of mine who work for a large firm in CNY. I have my "Syracuse" badge lanyard on, and we discuss that yes, I am an alum and while I also live in NJ, I have season tickets. They all chuckle and say that they can't even give away tickets to the luxury box that the firm owns. That's been my experience for the last 3+ years working with these guys. I try and make note of the local connection (SU) and have been just about laughed at every time. They appreciate the dedication, but barely even acknowledge that the football team exists. To me it is evidence that SU football is becoming irrelevant in CNY and is quite upsetting.

I mean literally nothing else to do

That's very disheartening to hear but unfortunately I'm not surprised. The good news is if they do a killer job on the Dome Reno, spend money on coaches and begin to compete in the ACC everybody will get right back on this train like they never left.

But in the meantime I hope you're taking advantage of that empty luxury box!

Hey, any chance if I make it up there next year, you can get those seats for me? :D

Attendance is hugely important for an exciting atmosphere. Unfortunately we're at a time in history when real human interactions are devalued against electronic interactions. Facebook and Twitter are up, bowling leagues and church attendance are down. Even the teen pregnancy rate is down, thanks to our electronic silos.

Nothing I can do with that box... Ethics rules and all.
