Ervin Philips to slot receiver

Agree. He's ideal for a slot back. Can still get the ball on jet sweeps.

He was never going to line up at RB and get 20 carries per game. Wouldn't hold up.

Between Ishmael, Estime, Phillips, maybe (cough) Broyld, this shouldn't be the 150 yard, one good scoring drive offense that it ended the year as.
I think you hit the nail on the head - he was never going to stand up with a lot of carries per game. Looks like a good decision to me.

My only question about this move is what kind of offense will SU run to get their best play-makers on the field at the same time? This move would indicate a lot of 4-wide with Erv/Estime/Broyld/Ishmael, wouldn't it?

It could mean that at times you bring Broyld to the backfield and use him as RB which he might be good at in limited spots. if you have those 4 out there with a RB you would have 3 RBs on the field

Don't hold your breath.

Source? How do you know what our offense will look like?!

There are clues - but I don't think anyone outside of Lester and Shafer know what the playbook will look like.

New England plays a 12 personnel. Edelman/Amendola and before them Welker seemed to do pretty well in the slot...

i thought about the board when gronk reached out and snagged that empty whoopee cushion the patriots call a football. he was a tight end in name only there.

hopefully our tight ends are really just big WR that are fast enough

Great. Is Lester installing all those routes where Edelman runs off Gronk's routes? It's a great scheme to get Edelman into space for easy 10 yard routes.

Very true but Gronk can also block like a TE. They had a good scheme working with him and A-A-ron "Killer" Hernandez and the WR could work off them. Have seen many people say that we will run a lot now that Lester changes to the 12 personnel. This is not necessarily true. 12 personnel can be very adaptive to players if used correctly.

As much as I wasn't a fan of McDonald going to pro teams for a week, it had more to do with no being a fan of the teams he went to. If Lester went to New England and studied their offense to incorporate plays/packages into his offense I would be thrilled.

Side note: I hate the NE Patriots so none of what is written above is fan, but I respect their offense so hope Lester can institute a similar one at SU. And I would be OK with slightly deflating the balls if that means we win - in the grand scheme of things I don't find this a horrible issue.

Of course no ones knows for sure, but Lester's history does not indicate he will be WR friendly. He has been a run to pass guy and I don't think that will change. I really don't care as long as he wins.
