AJ Long #242!!!!!

What a huge commit he is and if we can bring in Holmes he is #75. That would be an awesome 1-2 punch!!

So pumped. First top 300 commit in a while and at the most important position!

Stupid question, but how come when I go to ESPN's college football recruiting page, I can't find the new ESPN 300 list?

I'm in California and I don't see it either.

I found the link on the r main board

Just checked back and ESPN has taken it down for some reason

He is actually #242 on the ESPN W/L (Watch List) however that usually tranfers into the 300 list they put out, with some changes, but is pretty clear. So guys, down play it all you want, this is a great pick up and to have it on this early means alot for our recruiting program.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/f...scommit/Commitments/statusuncommit/Uncommited

When listed, names appear alphabetically. Click on Grade and it will sort by points, which you can't see yet. He will be listed in the mid 200's. Projections are he will be a top 300 ESPN selection and has an outside shot at top 150 according to some.

Watch list doesn't necessarily translate to 4 star top 300 even though prob the majority do. Fwiw Jonny Miller was also ESPN watch list top 300 before rankings came out but then was not top 300 after (prob for good reason)

As a junior he led his team in his first year, as he was a transfer to the school, to an 11-1 record, threw 37 TDs with only 1 INT, lost only 1 fumble while running for an average of 7.69 yds/per carry, 669 tot/rush yds with 12 Rushing TDs. So, he accounted for 49TDs with only 2 TO's with 3200 total yards. He also completed 61.1% of his passes. In comparrison, Zach Allen completed 54.5%) and AJ played on a higher nationally ranked team than Zach, and he was a junior! I'd say we got a keeper, I don't need some stupid ESPN 300 poll to tell me that. Just a thought here....

Agree Van. BUT, perception is part of this game as you know. If recruits see other "committed" 4* players signed up, it will only build momentum. I have zero doubt, we are becoming an interesting player on the recruiting scene. If a kid doesn't like and want to play for a coach like Shafer, I would be surprised. He reminds me of Coach Mac more than anyone out there (minus the accent). The IPF, great new coaches (including Coach McDonald), ACC and a consistence presence on TV will all help truly move this program back to top 25 relevancy like it was when I graduated.

Will update my personal recruitment of two studs in 2015 playing in Georgia soon. Both want to camp at CUSE this summer..

Good times ahead!

Some of and recruiting rankings! Most of our best players have been 2 star recruits with few or any other offers. So don't assume a player is good because a recruiting service says so.

While I agree completely that Marrone's staff did a great job identifying lightly recruited kids or late bloomers and developing them into good players at the D1 level, I don't think anyone can deny that the 4 stars they did recruit, Spruill, Broyld, Ron Thompson and Wayne Morgan, were all physically ready to play the second they stepped foot on campus. Spruill started as a freshman, Broyld and Morgan both played as freshman and Thompson looked to be a significant part of the offense last year as a freshman prior to getting hurt.

Generally, the kids that are rated 4 or 5 stars by the services are those that are being hounded by the big boys and have shown on the national circuit physical attributes and development that puts them ahead of the rest. Combine that with our staff's ability to identify talent, and we should be extremely happy anytime that we land a 4 star recruit. That generally tells us that it's a recruit that is widely regarded as being able to make an immediate impact, and it's a recruit that our staff has identified through their system as being someone they want.

The key to the program being successful will always be the ability to identify diamonds in the rough and developing them. But we need to be able to recruit players that can make an immediate impact and be in the program for 4 years as well. Right now, we're supplementing our inability to land the blue chips with 5-7 JUCO's per year. I think as we are able to land more of the blue chip type recruits, our reliance on JUCO's will start to fade.

FYI AJ Long now shows as an ESPN 300 recruit and 4 star for me as well. And Nas Howard is a 3 star top 50 RB at ESPN.

The highest draft picks have been 2 star players with few or no offers. The 4 stars that have been recruited have mostly been overrated or busts Averin Collier, Lavar Lobdell, and even Marcus sales was no 4 star level player.

Mike Williams, the Jones brothers, Nassib, Pugh etc were 2 stars that turned in to major NFL prospects. I have very little faith in recruiting websites.

Stars are what they are, but isn't it exciting? It is about perception, and that is what is changing. We got alot of press with DM going to Buffalo, and now with a couple of 1st round draft prospects with Pugh and Nassib. Should both of them be picked in 1st round on the first night of the draft, that will be a huge boost for the recruiting program and something to hang your hat on! Bottom line, SU has showed they can develop players, now we get the opportunity to develop even better players! I would say that is an exciting upgrade, starts aside.

All of the guys that you mention were GROB recruits. The 4 stars GRob brought in (4 star at either Rvls or Sct) were Lobdell, Delone Carter, Andrey Baskin, Jermaine Pierce, Doug Hogue, Romale Tucker, Averin Collier, Marcus Sales, Mikhail Marinovich and Adam Rosner. Granted a pretty mixed bag, Baskin never made it, Pierce never saw the field due to injury, Tucker and Collier dropped out, Rosner and Lobdell were non-factors, Marinovich was a 3 year starter at DE, Sales had a great senior year and was the top receiving option prior to getting suspended, Carter is one of the best backs to ever play at Syracuse, is 3rd all-time in rushing and was drafted in the 4th round, and Hogue was a fantastic linebacker who got drafted in the 5th round.

10 guys over 4 years isn't much of a sample, and my comment was really geared towards the 4 stars that the Marrone staff and the current SS staff have recruited because I feel that they are better collectively at evaluating talent.

you may not care, and a lot of posters may not care, but don't doubt for a second the actual players really do care. Van got it right by saying it is all about perception. If one highly rated recruit commits it makes it easier for the next. If you have a highly rated qb, it will make it easier for some highly rated WR's to say they want to come play with him. If there are a bunch of 4 star guys it's a lot easier to join that class then it would be for a lone 4 or even 5 star kid to join a group of NR, or 2 stars. For most of these kids it is the first (and maybe the last) time these kids are being covered like this. Most of them love the attention, and the accolades that come along with it. The higher the star or the rating the more the accolades.

Sure most of us realize a 4 or 5 star kid doesn't guarantee successful career, but it definitely helps the perception of the program.

Let me know how many National Championships CUSE or anyone in the BE has with 2/3* football players vs. Bama and the SEC. Don't be that naive. Developing players vs being a gifted athlete out of high school is one issue. Winning consistently vs not, is another.

We will be a better football team with better players. Developing players above their high school rating is great coaching.

Chicken or the egg? Meaning are these athletes rated so highly and then get a Bama offer, OR do they get Bama offer and then get highly rated? Might be a mixed bag but recruiting services seem to pander (deservedly) to whichever teams has the most paying subscribers and teams are after alot of these players prior to them having high recruiting service rankings.

I like "who" we are recruiting but as always the trick is sealing the deal and getting them here I have two RBs that are on my big want list at that position Travis Lock and the new offer Ollisin.Either one is a big time addition for Scott and the program Lock has great speed but there is something about Ollisin that really intrigues me. I think he is a special kind of RB prospect for the Orangemen program. I've seen a whole lot of the big names young and old and there is something there I'm struck by/with.;)
