Interesting. The guys talked about the need to get Eddie the ball more. I don't disagree with that, makes sense because no one can reliably make plays outside JJ. That said, it makes me nervous getting the ball to Eddie on the perimeter. We did that a LOT against Pitt. Why not get him the ball when he's closer to the basket? When he's on the perimeter, he can really only do one thing... pass.

Our guards are terrible passers. They literally can’t get Eddie the ball down low. I don’t think Moore Taylor or Bell even know you’re allowed to pass.

Yeah, the passing is remedial along with the defense.

X's and O's plays to get him the ball in the paint isn't really part of our 1-trick pony pick-and-roll offense.

The only safe pass we can seem to get him with any consistency is from the side perimeter near the baseline and he has to come out from the key with back to the basket to get it. He then tries to backdown his man into the key for a spin layup or babyhook. However, most of the teams we're playing now have figured out that's our only effective pass into him and collapse a guard on him from top of the key and double him to steal the ball as he tries to muscle in (basic coaching. ) To his credit, Eddie was picking up on that more last game and passing out to a perimeter open shooter when that happens and we hit a few treys (or at least good open looks.)

Carlos can pick an occasional decent pass, but not when he's dribbling terrified that his faster mark is gonna steal the ball from him (which is 90% of the time.)

Wish JJ had better passing skills, since he's the fastest slasher, but I think he is what he is at this point.

Eddie is the best passer and he can't pass to himself.

It seems like we've lacked players that could perform a basic post entry pass so many of the 10 years. Is it really that hard? Are guys really not being taught?

Disclosure - I didn't listen to the pod, but going off what you and others wrote.

Here is my argument for putting Eddie up top and being our homeless man's Jokic ---

Currently, our high pick and roll is anemic. Not because JJ doesn't have the speed/athleticism to get a step on his defender, but because the high pick and roll is supposed to put the defense into a position where the offensive ball handler can survey the floor and find the mismatch (whether that be continue to drive, oop, skip pass to the corner, etc). So if JJ can get the angle and the runway is free, he's awesome at it. Great at floaters, finishing and finding angles off the back board.

However, if it entails finding the open guy, especially if a skip pass is called for, he can't do it that well or at all. Again, it's a lot to ask of him.

JC can't do it. Cuffe can't do it. Choppa can't do it.

So I get why bringing out Eddie to the top of the key or offset a bit to get him the ball and open up the lane for a slasher like JJ could work or finding the open three point shooter.

Also may limit offensive rebounds. Would really like this more if Donnie were playing just because for his faults, he can cook a mismatch when he has it.

Wasn't it Mintz and Edwards who had this down pretty well?

Edwards was much better on the roll than Eddie is. That is what I should have also mentioned. Eddie really can't be that guy.

Ideally he could handle at least the short roll (vs diving all the way to the basket, especially since he isn't a threat to finish an oop) and running the 4 on 3, but even that I think would be tough for him (and, to be honest, JJ making a pocket pass consistently might be rough).

That last year with Jesse he had both Judah and JGIII (the latter rrlbees mentioned in his post and Joe was better at getting the ball to Jesse than others). That team shot 36.2% from three. you could feasibly keep a defense held up on the perimeter a bit. Right now we are 31.2% and I would imagine that will tick down just a bit once we start playing this back half of the conference schedule unless Chris Bell becomes last year's Chris Bell.

I don't want to make it seem that a 17-15 team was great, but Judah and Joe, while being combos, had, imo, much more ability to make better passes than who we have now (and I'm not trying to throw shade at JJ, but he is not really even a combo at this time, he is a 2G that passes).

I don't know the answer, but I think trying more of Eddie running things up top couldn't hurt at this point. If it doesn't work, so what? I think JJ has done an admirable job for what he is capable of vs what he is asked to do vs recovering after being hurt. But JJ is a pretty limited player even though he is a solid player.

And this is obviously all outside of our defensive issues, which I don't think can be fixed at all this year.

But I'm also the guy that thought Chris Bell should be running through multiple screens and catching passes on the curl and throwing up like 8 threes a game and making like 40%. And he sits in the corner and is playing like he's being blackmailed to play basketball. I know JJ has made some really tough jumpers/three, but he really should be attacking relentlessly. He should be shooting a million FTs a game.

I dunno, every team, including us, uses the high pick and roll. But our set includes Chris sitting in the corner in case someone cheats (which is fine if he can reliably get the ball as soon as he has a crack and then makes them at a decent clip), someone setting a bad pick and hoping that JJ can get the corner it seems like.

And, as I noted, this all pales in comparison to our defense which has to be the worst I've ever seen watching Cuse basketball and that's saying something with our recent history.

Sorry for answering a question you didn't really ask. But it's frustrating to watch this offense and then be tortured by our defense.

the inability to deliver an entry pass to a post player is a problem that this program has had well before Red.

like for homeless man's Jokic.

I won't listen to this show unless and until they stop the blind AA cheerleading
