European Football Summer Transfer Window

It appears that Chelsea have purchased Alejandro Garnacho from Man United for a fee around 40M.

Newcastle are warming to the idea of 60M for Nicolas Jackson. More evidence that they are resigned to losing Isak to Liverpool, and are making plans.

Chelsea has been dragging their feet on signing Xavi Simons, the Dutch winger / attacking MF from Leipzig, and now Man City are considering making a move for him. He is very much a Pep Guardiola kind of player with the ball at his feet.

Christopher Nkunku's still on the market, and Inter are the latest team credited with interest, as a substitute for Ademola Lookman. He was offered to Man United, as part of a swap deal to Leipzig, where they have interest and he was successful a few years ago. Chelsea need to get things wrapped up.

If Liverpool closes with Guess, Leon and Isak they will be on paper the hands on favourite to repeat.

I have two concerns...

Getting these guys all playing well together will take a month or two which might mean that City opens up a big lead by Christmas. I was not happy with the backline in the charity shield. Also it's not clear how Slot will fit all these guys into a starting 11 which will also lead to disruption. Right now it looks like Szobozlai and Jones are going to be backups to MacAllister and Gravenberch. Will Szobo be happy in that role?

I'm not sure Isak is the right answer and worth disrupting the entire team. Isak reminds me of an NFL diva WR who always wants the ball... can a team have both him and Salah on the pitch at the same time? Salah actually does a lot on the pitch, but he is also protecting himself on the pitch as he ages.

I know the Isak move plus the Leoni, Guehi moves are thinking forward 2 years then VVD and Salah are likely to leave. But it might put this year at risk.

City without KDB are pretty pedestrian. Kyle Walker aging out really took the steel out of that back line as well. No more free safety over the too running back to super sweeper keeper Ederson means there's now space to get in behind them.

Man for man I believe Arsenal or Chelsea to be more threatening squads vs City at this point.

Good thoughtful post. I'm not so convinced that City is going to start on fire. Rodri is hurt again, and they are incorporating new guys, too.

I think Arsenal and Chelsea are the ones likely to start the season on fire - so long as Chelsea can ge past an on-form Crystal Palace on Sunday.

It's too bad Konate won't re-sign for Liverpool, because he had some good moments during that game.

Liverpool would sign Konate for what he wants if they could trust him to stay healthy. He’s also great for one brain fart per game that create a big chance for the other team. I’m okay trading Quansah/Konate for Leoni/Guehi. Also will help Liverpool meet the home grown player quota as Leoni is young enough and Guehi is a Brit.

Liverpool need their young RB to stay healthy as they can’t have Endo playing RB… shocking how Robertson has aged the last year or two meaning they need a backup LB also.

If Liverpool can get to Halloween in first they will be hard to stop. They are still getting new guys in, but more importantly, Salah showed, this is a group of guys who are in mourning from losing a brother 6 short weeks ago.

Apparently Liverpool will go 130mm for Isak… is he worth that much?

Totally have felt the same about Reece James and Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia at Chelsea.

Ekitike just got off to a great start, but Isak would make them Champions League favorites, not just Premier League favorites.

Eze, the Crystal Palace winger, to miss the Chesea game on Sunday. Seems like a move to Tottenham is near completion.

Newcastle fans are getting angry at Alexander Isak on social media. It's really getting to the point of no return. And they do need to leave themselves enough time to buy a couple replacements, if Liverpool does come calling again.

Ederson may be moving to Galatasaray in Turkiye for 10M. That's why he was not in the lineup in the first game, as James Trafford got a clean sheet.

Newcastle close the deal on Jacob Ramsey joining from Aston Villa, and he even had a run out in the game earlier today. Big addition for Newcastle.

Forest seems to be closing on Hutchinson and the attacker from my post the other day.

Xavi Simons and Chelsea are supposedly still "a thing", despite Man City interest, but Chelsea can't sign him and register him for Champions League until Nkunku is sold.

That's why this was a swap deal for so long, but now Bayern seem to be interested, since they have 2 wingers to replace.

Nkunku would be happy to play at either, but until he's sold, Simons is in limbo.

If Newcastle sells Isak in the next 48 hours, then they have about 10 days to find a replacement before the window closes.

They could turn to Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea, Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, or maybe someone from France who they've also been looking at.

But I think Eddie Howe would prefer having at least 1 proven Premier League goal scorer.

Chelsea won't go above 30M for Garnacho of United, unless they can sell Jackson. So that one is in limbo, too.

Meanwhile, Roma offered 20M to United for Jaden Sancho. They have to get something for these guys before they can buy others.

It's a common game of chicken, as we approach the end of the window. This is when teams start to get desperate, and when big mistakes can be made.

Chelsea’s transfer strategy the last few windows has made no sense to me… I don’t understand why they have bought and inked so many players who are so similar to each other. Now they can’t get new players unless they sell ones they bought like two windows ago. Trying to compete with City and Liverpool has gone to their brains.

ManU just needs a complete overhaul so they can reset their wage bill. They are like the Mets were two seasons ago when they had a half billion payroll with a lot of high priced veterans aging out in real time. Luckily Cohen bailed them out with his billions. ManU doesn’t have that kind of money so they are stuck between rebuild and hallucinating they have a shot to qualify for the champions league.

Yeah, I have been unhappy with Chelsea's transfer activity.

The first year, when Boehley took over, he was looking to Thomas Tuechel for direction, but Tuechel didn't want to be too involved in recruitment; he just wanted to coach the gameday squad.

So that led to some crappy senior signings that didn't work out (Koulibaly, Sterling). The next year, they signed too many guys for the same positions, it's true. You can't have 35 guys in the team.

This last year, Maresca cut the squad down.

To me, the biggest problem has been that they recruit over guys before they have given them enough game time to see if they can play or not.

Lately, they seem to have settled on roles. They have moved out a lot of guys in the last 9 months. Players have a couple years together, for the most part, and their chemistry is growing, especially after winning a couple competitions.

Turning to Manchester United, I think they need 3 new players - a defending MF, a left back, and another center back. I think the attacking recruitment has been good, but the midfield is weak, and the defense is slow.

Latest transfer news -

Sebastian Haller, once a Premier League Forward at West Ham, has moved from Dortmund to Utrecht in Belgium. This guy was once called a 100M center forward.

Bournemouth purchase 19 year old winger Ben Doak from Liverpool for 25M.

After Alexander Isak broke his silence, saying he had been lied to by Newcastle management about a new deal, and he let them know a year ago. Liverpool is expected to make a UK record 130M approach for him "next week".

Next week? It's only Tuesday, and there are only 12 days left in the window. If I'm Newcastle, I want the offer now, if they're leaking it to the press.

Nottingham Forest finalize 3 attacking signings - MF James McAtee from Man City, W Omari Hutchinson from Ipswitch, and CF Arnaud Kaliamuendo from Rennes. They are looking pretty solid now in attack, but could use another defender or two.

Nottingham Forest are also said to be making progress on obtaining Douglas Luiz from Juventus. With all their other signings, this would be a beauty!

Spurs appear to have signed Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace as a replacement for James Maddison, who suffered an ACL injury.

Leeds are finalizing a move for Milan forward Noah Okafor. for 21M. Dominic Calvert-Lewin just joined Leeds on a free transfer, too.

Leipzig and Bayern are now both interested in Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku. Hopefully something happens soon, so they can close other deals that have been in limbo.

Bournemouth have signed attacking MF Amine Adli from Bayer Leverkuesen for 29M.

Leon Bailey joins Roma on loan from Aston Villa for the year. Kind of a surprise move, unless Villa is freeing up some wages to make a signing.

Another salary dump, as Leon Dorndocker, the MF, leaves Aston Villa for Real Oviedo, the newly promoted side in La Liga.

No progress for LIverpool signing Marc Guehi. Palace is holding out for 40M, but he's in the last year of his contract. Liverpool doesn't want to overpay, after all the money they've spent so far this summer.

Garnacho turns down interest from Bayern. Says he will "only go to Chelsea". Chelsea has to move Nkunku and either Nicolas Jackson, Renato Veiga, or Carney Chukwemeka in order to sign him and Xavi Simons.

Jamie Vardy may be talking to Brendan Rogers at Celtic about joining them, rather than move to MLS.

Chelsea still trying to move Renato Veiga before the window closes. They want 40M for him, and are now talking to Villareal. Previously there was interest in Italy, but those teams don't have that much money, whereas the Spanish league is probably the 2nd best, and 2nd wealthiest, in Europe.

I hate this one. Veiga is a perfect guy for their defense. But I understand from past interviews that he does not want to play left back or defensive midfield. He only wants to play center back, which is where he sees his future. To Enzo Maresca, Veiga's value is his versatility, and he feels that they have better options at center back.

West Ham is trying to get Andrey Santos from Chelsea, but Chelsea just got him; they're not selling him. And they probably don't want to loan him, either. He's been in France already. They want him in the first team.

Man City's 19 year old attacking MF Claudio Echeverri is off to Bayer Leverkuesen on a year long loan.

Yoan Wissa, CF for Brentford, was back in training today, after staging a walk-out to force through a move to Newcastle.

I can see Vardy to Celtic if we qualify for Champions League.
Need more than Adam Idah and Johnny Kenny up front.

Also makes it easy to decide what jersey to get when I win the Fantasy league this season ;)

Yes, absolutely. He would love to have one more crack at that, and Celtic under Rogers are pretty much guaranteed 2 or 3 trophies every year. It would be a nice way to cap his career.

A couple big surprises - Arsenal leaps in and snatches Eberechi Eze from Tottenham's clutches, topping their bid for the Crystal Palace winger, and getting his signature in a single day after Havertz hurts his knee, when Spurs were dicking around with this for a few weeks. How long ago did Maddison tear his ACL? SMH

Nottingham Forest gets Douglas Luiz from Juventus! He's taking his physical right now in London. Wow, that's a huge addition for them. They are going to be competing for European places again this year.

Eze Madueke Saka. Exciting English talent there.

They needed Eze way more than Madueke.

Did you notice that they just signed Trossard to an extension.

I would guess that Martinelli is on the market now.

Him Nelson Viera Zinchenko all can leave. Tbh if I need any of those players Arsenal will probably take a cut rate price.

Yeah, a bunch of the contenders have 5 guys like that they really need to move, but whose wages close off so many options.

At some point, guys have to ask themselves, "If I stay here and don't play for 2 years, just to collect this big salary, is anyone going to hire me for a new contract?"

As I mentioned in another thread, The Gunners steal Eze from Spurs in a single day, after Spurs dawdled on this deal for several weeks. You snooze you lose, Mr. Levy.

Aston Villa's 32 year old defensive back Alex Moreno leaves for Girona in Italy on a permanent deal. More depletion of Emery's squad that has to play in Europe.

Everton gets 19 year old MF Tyler Dibling from Southampton for 42M. United were interested, but lose out (after already missing on Baleba of Brighton).

Manchester United have struck out on so many goal keepers that now they're looking at Senn Lammens of Royal Antwerp in Belgium for 17M.

Andy Diouf, MF, moves from Rennes to Inter Milan for 17M.

Luis Sinisterra, the winger who just completed his first year at Bournemouth, has been loaned to a side in Brazil, Cruizero, and it looks to be permanent. What? I thought he had talent ...

Chelsea finally move on Renato Veiga to Villareal for 30M E.

Ben Godfrey, the 27 year old central defender who used to play for Everton, leaves Atalanta in Italy on a year long loan to Sheffield United, to try to help them win promotion back to the Prem.

Wrexham sign Center Back Callum Doyle, an England U-21, from Manchester City for 7.5M.

After failing to break through at Vitesse or Utrecht, Frankfurt sends Paxton Aaronson back to Colorado in MLS on loan.

Chelsea complete the sale of Carney Chukwemeka to Dortmund for 25M + add ons + a sizable sell-on clause. Chelsea are also sending South American center back Aaron Anselmino there on a year long loan.

Portueguese attacking player Renato Sanches is moving from PSG to Panathinaikos on loan. The 28 year old has stalled out, after previous stints at Benfica, Bayern Munich, and a bunch of spells on loan.

Roma are talking to Liverpool about left back Kostas Tzimikas. Roma are also showing interest in young Chelsea winger Tyrique George.

Aston Villa are supposedly in the lead to get Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea. Unai Emergy previously coached him in Spain.

Villa join Man United, Bayern and Leipzig with supposed interest in Christopher Nkunku, who has been on the market all summer with still no takers.

Borussia Munchengladbach have signed Gio Reyna. Good luck to him. I hope he gets to play. He has only started 14 times in the last 4 seasons in Germany. Last year, he has 5 starts and 21 appearances off the bench. He missed 19 games with a groin injury last season. He missed 150 days for 6 different reasons in 2022-23, and missed nearly the whole year in 2021-22 with muscle injuries.

Hope Gladbach has a better environment for Reyna than Dortmund. The physio team failed him just as much as his parent probably let him down.

I just read an article about how Gladbach intends to use him. They see him a sort a Swiss Army Knife player, to fill in on either wing, or in the number 10 spot.
Hard to believe that he's been hurt for the last 3 years, but is still only 22 years old.

3 days until the transfer deadline.

Chelsea finally sells Christopher Nkunku - to AC Milan for 35M. Hopefully this accelerates a couple other transfers that have been in limbo.

Alejandro Garnacho of United appears to be Chelsea bound, finally, for 40M. Should get announced today.
