The Summer Club World Cup means that this summer's transfer window is opening sooner than expected, then closing, then reopening. Chaos.

Confirmed deals / hot rumors (not wild speculation) so far:
  • Liam Delap, center forward - Ipswitch to Chelsea
  • Matheus Cunha - Wolves to Man United
  • Man City closing in on Rayan Ait-Nouri, a Joao Cancelo style left back for Pep, from Wolves
  • Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen to Liverpool?
  • Kevin DeBruyne to Napoli?
  • Benjamin Sesko (Leipzig) in advanced talks with Arsenal to become their new #9
  • Chelsea also closing on Hugo Ekitike, another #9 (in the Alexander Isak mold), from Frankfurt
  • Liverpool's backup GK to Brentford
  • Looks like Emi Martinez will be allow to leave by Aston Villa this summer

And recent transfer rumors from EPSN FC and other reputable sources:

Spurs fire Ange Postecoglu today, after Spurs 17th place finish, despite winning the Europa League and qualifying for Champions League. Top choice would be Thomas Frank from Bournemouth, IMO.

Chelsea looking to get Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as Villa missed out on Champions League. Villa want a lot, but Chelsea willing to offer Joao Felix and Axel Disasi (both of whom Unai Emery likes) to reduce the price.

Man United back with an improved bid for Brian Mbeumo. He's a big talent, but may have over-achieved a bit on expected goals last year.

Liverpool looking to add more creativity to their attack, chasing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. He will be very expensive, probably the costliest move of the summer.

Newcastle needs to strengthen on the wings, and in defense, and now that they've made Champions League, they have some money to spend after a couple years of very little transfer activity to freshen up the team. Looking at Anthony Elanga of Forest, also trying to get Guehi, the central defender from Palace. Chelsea want him too.

AC Milan look to cash in on Rafael Leao, a Portuguese international. Asking price is 70M. He plays on the same team as Pulisic, so I have seen a lot of him. He's another one of these athletic wingers who can kick the ball 20 yards downfield and get around the defender. But when it comes to end product, he's like a Joao Felix or Andre Garnacho type of player. Lots of sizzle, but no steak.

Atletico Madrid has jumped to the front of the line to sign US midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who had a good year at Real Betis in La Liga.

Arsenal might want to buy Kepa, after he had a very solid season at Bournemouth. That would be a great financial boost to finally get him off the books at Chelsea.

It will be interesting to see which players who go deep into the Club World Cup will wind up making moves to Europe at the end of the summer.

Somehow I left out Arsenal, who are having quite a summer.

So far, Martin Zubimendi, the defensive midfielder that Liverpool tried to sign last year. He's very skillful and robust.

They are also adding another defensive midfielder, the guy from Brentford, Christian Norgaard. He's very solid and Premier League proven. This means they can afford to play Declan Rice further forward near Odegaard in the front of the midfield. They are deep in midfield now.

They look close to signing Victor Gyorkes from Sporting Lisbon, but Sporting are being stubborn about the valuation. Manchester United would like to take advantage, but if Arsenal can't make a deal work, then United won't be able to, because they are under much tighter financial restrictions.

Arsenal acquired Kepa from Chelsea for a pittance to be their backup goalkeeper. He had a good year for Bournemouth last year and is well suited to the role and might even win a trophy next year.

They seem to be making a mistake in buying Noni Madueke, if they plan to use him on the left. He played 85% of his time for Chelsea on the other side, and was ineffectual on the left in his final few games. Eze from Crystal Palace is a much better choice.

If they want someone electric for LW, go get Rodrygo from Real Madrid. He's available, and he is fantastic. Real has no room for him with Vini and Mbappe ahead of him in that position.

OK, I've waited a week to post again to this thread. I hope that's ok.

Liverpool has joined Newcastle in the chase for Hugo Ekitike. His team in Germany turned down a 70M pound offer from Newcastle.

Arsenal, which had a great start to the window, has stalled out on Eberechi Eze, a left winger from Crystal Palace, and Viktor Gyorkes of Sporting Lisbon. Chelsea has supposedly made inquiries of Eze's camp.

Marcus Rashford is among many looking for a way out of Manchester United. Latest interest is from Bayern. Rashford would like a move to Barcelona, but they are so strapped financially, that there is no guarantee they can register players before the season starts. That's why they couldn't close on Nico Williams of Athletic.

Malik Tillman cashes in on his excellent summer and signed with Bayer Leverkusen. Good move for him.

Rogrygo is on his way out from Real Madrid. Arsenal expressed tepid interest. Chelsea has kicked the tires. Now Liverpool are showing interest, as they figure out Luis Diaz's future.

People are still looking at Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, including Newcastle, Liverpool and Chelsea. I'm thinking he'll make a move but it's going to be toward the end of the window.

US International Johnny Cardoso has moved from Real Betis to Athletico Madrid.

Patrick Agmeyang has signed with Derby County of the English Championship league.

Leipzig's 22 year old young center forward Benjamin Sesko is pricing himself out of a move, and just turned down interest from Saudi Arabia.

Chelsea looking to do some more business. Jorrell Hato, a young left back from Ajax is on their radar as cover for Spanish Jesus, Marc Cucurella at left back.

Chelsea has signed a young left winger (for too much money) - Jamie Gittens from Dortmund. But they are looking for a more senior guy, too - they are looking at Ebereze Eche of Crystal Palance, Garnacho from United (God, no! He's terrible.) and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, who would probably be the best choice.

Chelsea is looking at goal keepers. Sanchez is a top rated shot stopper but makes so many mistakes at the back in distribution. Mike Maignon of AC Milan has been the subject of a bid that was rejected. They're looking at other guys who are not "sure things" in my opinion.

If they buy anybody, my choice would be Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, the German who currently sits on the bench at Barcelona, and who wants to start for Germany in the upcoming World Cup.

Man City did well early in the window, and are sitting on their powder for now. I think they still need a fullback and a central defender.

Spurs have done well so far in the offseason, signing Mohammed Kudus, who took a step backward last year at West Ham, but is a real talent, IMO. They are also after Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham but have been loudly accused of tampering by Forest, so this move may be in doubt.

Athletico Madrid were trying to steal away Spurs' important central defender, Christian Romero, but AM have backed off. Spurs certainly hope to keep him alongside Mickey Van De Ven in their central defense. They also signed a young Center Back from Japan.

Arsenal spends the money and gets their banger up front to play the number 9, Viktor Gyorkes.

Liverpool is probably going to be the next big Premier League team to sign a number 9. Darwin Nunez isn't going to cut it for them as their full-time guy (with Cody Gakpar and Luis Diaz in reserve).

As an avid footie myself, I appreciate you providing these updates!

Seconded. Thanks for compiling all these, Matt.

I really only pay attention to the Premier League, so the transfer that has stood out a ton to me is Elanga from NForest to Newcastle.
Should be first choice but could battle for minutes with Jacob Murphy.

I don't have the stats, but I feel like half of Chris Wood's goals this past season were on assists from Elanga.
So imagining Elanga, Anthony Gordon, and a healthy Lewis Hall supplying Isak, who is quicker and can better create his own shot than Wood imo, has huge potential for NU.

I agree, Elanga is a good get for Newcastle. Shame it took them so long to get it over the line. I read something the other day, like they only feel they can do one deal at a time, because of financial fair play concerns, but geez, they have oil money. They want Guehi to bolster their defense, they want Ekitike to provide cover and competition for Isak. They need another guy in midfield after selling Sean Longstaff. They are self-sabotaging.

I’m just happy that Moise Kean is not going anywhere.

Sounds like he's on higher wages, and his release clause just went poof a couple days ago, right? Congrats! He's a very good player.

I wish I liked Italian soccer more. I always watch Pulisic's games, and enjoy seeing a good Italian team in Champions or Europa League. Lots of really good coaches, too. But I just can't drawn into it for some reason.

Striker market = the dominoes are falling.

Liverpool gets Ekiteke from Germany.
Gyorkes is taking his physical for Arsenal. Arsenal out on Rodrygo.

Ollie Palmer is pitching himself to Manchester United, as moves for Mbeumo and even Yoane Wissa seem uncertain.
Marcus Rashford might be going to Juventus.

Isak won't leave and Newscastle won't sell anyone with Champions League on tap this year. But will they sign anyone? It seems like it's so hard for them. I just don't get it. Newcastle has great fans, a big stadium, Saudi owners. They still don't seem like they're trying.

Chelsea making a big push for Morgan Rogers to start at LW. I was pulling for Ter Stegen as the new GK, but I just read that he might have back surgery. So, nope, I guess not.

Spurs seem to be falling adrift.
Aston Villa need to do something, too.

I am somewhat unique in that my first taste of soccer was when I moved to Italy back in the late 70s so I have been following Serie A for almost 50 years.

If I were in your shoes, ie. an American who discovered soccer a decade or two ago I would likely also be a Prem fan.

The Prem is a much better league than Serie A and is much more enjoyable to watch. The game is much faster, free-flowing and the players are, in general, more skilled and more athletic.

I watch Serie A because I am a Fiorentina fan.

Sounds like he's on higher wages, and his release clause just went poof a couple days ago, right? Congrats! He's a very good player.
Smart move by him. Assuming he stays healthy and productive, he will be a shoo-in for the National team if they make the World Cup.

Then he can move next year when it does not matter quite as much.
