everyone needs to watch the lester video

you dont watch enough games then.

Maybe you're right. I literally had to google "one read offense" and I found this:

http://smartfootball.com/quarterbacking/did-cam-newton-play-in-a-one-read-passing-offense-at-auburn

What I learned is that maybe Drew Allen can't even make the correct read when there's only one to make (I mean, he's thrown SIX INT's in TWO games!). Also, if we are running a "one read" offense, why wouldn't we go with the best athlete at QB since the last option in the offense is for the QB to take off running?

Drew Allen is terrible. He can't throw the ball over the o-line. When he manages to get the ball over it's right into coverage. He complains constantly too. He's not a leader.

One against Penn State was a tunnel vision INT. Two against NW were tunnel vision INTs. He's on quite a roll.
And yet, "If Allen makes the same improvement from week 1 to 2 in week 3/4 we will be ok down the road."

Ugh.

Please tell me more about the complaining thing. Not being being a wise guy just wondering what you have heard.

did the Cal fans complain this much when they threw 2 Ints for TD against NW week 1?

6 INT's in 2 games! More than half way to the total amount of INT's thrown all of last season. You don't think there's a reason to complain?

If he makes the same improvement AND cleans up the huge, horrible (coach said repeatedly that it was unacceptable) INT - he'll throw for 600 yards completing 90%. So yeah, I think we'd be ok. Even with a few batted balls and an INT.

I'm not saying he will - but for a second - let's consider what this board would look like if he doesn't throw the 3 mistakes (excluding the great play from the NW player)? If you took 2 touchdowns off the board and added some points for us? What if his line is 66%, 2 TD's and 400 yards?

You have to be open to this possibility. I KNOW for a fact people here were ripping on Nassib last year until the 6 wins in 7 run. After starting off 0-2 vs quality opponents.

IF he throws multiple picks vs Wagner and Hunt plays well (both reads, throws AND freelancing) - then you make the switch.

I honestly think the coaches are taking exactly the right tack.

yes. if he plays poorly this week then its probably time to let Hunt run the offense against Tulane then decide for Clemson off the bye. But if he plays better this week and continues it vs Tulane he needs to stay the starter. Its too soon to jump ship. 4 Ints is too many. but the tip balls are a function of play calling more than people here want to admit.. Brady got several tipped vs the bills and he is 6'5. If you run those patterns its going to happen. And I dont think playing well this week is the real answer. He needs to show against Tulane as well.

Very well said

I agree.

I think the worst part of Allen's picks vs. Northwestern was that three of the four occurred on first down. It's one thing when int's are thrown on 3rd and long from mid-field and you're forcing one which becomes equivalent to a punt. It's another when you're feeling pretty good putting a good drive together and then --

I expect Allen to show a TON of improvement from week 2 to week 3/4. One read WRs are going to be much more open, and there should also be a running game to help too.

It's weeks 6 thru 9 that I'm worried about (not including byes). We throw 2-3 INTs per game in those 4 games, and we'll end up 1-3 at best. And be guaranteed 7 losses. Which could make the Drew Allen experiment a colossal waste of time.

I also don't think Hunt is a quick fix to this either, so I don't envy the coaches trying to deal with this one.

Tim Lester is the voice of reason -- and so important to our success this season. Has to help Allen and Hunt keep up their confidence, correct the flaws, deal with the competitive situation as they strive to get better. People point to schemes and play-calling (McDonald), but Lester is equally the guy. I like his background.

I could care less about Allen. He is a one and done guy and if he isn't superman (he isn't) then give the experience to Hunt. Shafer has made the right decision to give both time vs Wagner and hopefully also against Tulane. If Allen stinks the dome up against Clempson he can send in Hunt with some confidence.

Full disclosure - I hate these one year wonders - they just set back the development of players with potential like Hunt.

For sure. They were back breakers. I thought the picks after scoring drives and a hold from our D were the worst.

But like I said - if those don't happen? Might be a totally different deal. I'm hoping he gets past it, makes the right reads, settles down and just plays.

I also hope McDonald can get the running game going again. Need some positive momentum there too. Take the heat off whoever the QB is.

We are going to learn very little from this game. I mean come on. It is Wagner. 2500 students This game will teach us nothing. Does it really matter if JB and Cuse put up 150 against Nazareth?

It matters to Jeff Van Gundy

The key here is the word "we" - as in the board? As fans? I suspect we have a harder time learning anything from these games because we're not on the inside, watching the tape, seeing if players are where they are supposed to be, seeing how well things get communicated.

The staff and players will be using these next two games to clean up, get better at the little things - and maybe figure out how much to trust Drew, Estime, Ashton, etc.
