Here's a question that my roommate and I were discussing last night. If current Fab Melo and current Rak Christmas were stocks and you had to invest in one of them, which would it be?

I was on the Fab side. He's a 7 footer already "in" the NBA.
 
Fab. Avoid both, though. Coleman on the other hand...
 
I guess I have to lean towards Fab JUST SLIGHTLY more because he has played bball for only 6 or 7 years.

I don't know about "slightly" -- Fab wasn't a good offensive player, but he showed that he could be an impact caliber defensive presence, and was a first round pick.

Rak does some things well, but thus far hasn't consistently approached the same level of game impact Fab demonstrated his sophomore year. I'm still hoping that he'll continue along his developmental curve and show improvement next year, but he's running out of time.
 
Rak. He is still an athletic, lengthy forward.

Fab won't do squat in the NBA, although I'm rooting for him.

How are we talking, in terms of pro careers? I'd take Fab for sure, Rak doesn't look like much of a pro to me at this point.

Could a third or fourth year Rak be as good a soph year Fab? Sure

Rak shouldn't start this year as a Jr.
 
I'll take Rak because he's still got hope for a NBA career of more than 25 games. Fab is looking like he's heading overseas after the 14-15 season.
 
If we're going as pros, I would have to take Fab. Rak is what, 6-9 225 and has no outside offensive game. (and not much of an interior one, for that matter)
 
So I have to decide if I'm gonna go poor really fast or really, really fast?
 
I'm surprised to see votes for Rak. Both came to college with a ton of potential but despite his innate ability and top-shelf athleticism, Christmas has made minimal, if any, improvement to his game. From freshman to sophomore year Fab transformed his body and game to become the BE defensive player of the year and one of the premier defensive forces in the nation. Both have miles to go to become a factor at the next level but I'll take the guy that has already shown signs of the commitment and dedication it'll take to get there. My money is on Fab all day long. But, I pray that Rak uses his junior year to prove me wrong. :)
 
Fab, and it is not even close. If Fab was not suspended for 2012 ncaa tourney, cuse would have been in a final 4, he impacted the game that much
 
That's tough, I know a lot of you talked about how dominant a force Fab was here, but in the pro setting, where I've watched him play, he looks lost and all over the place, especially on Defense. Unfortunately, not a lot of zone being played in the NBA. But I'd still take him because you can't teach 7 ft. and Rak is very passive by nature, very hard to change that.
 
Rak. If they were stocks, I'm more confident in Rak retaining his value. I think Fab peaked and has already started dropping. I wouldn't be confident in either one making me anything.

personally i would hoard my money in cash.

But if I had to pick 1? it's not even a question - its fab by a mile.

Rak may have a productive SU career by the time its all said in done - but I dont see an NBA ready big man body nor do I see a jump shot or handle.
 
Neither are investment grade. They are bbb, junk bond quality as far as the NBA is concerned. The only way to buy is a bundle of the entire Development League and hope enough pan out to cover the risk, and in the interim get paid a high interest rate or else walk away. This questions calls for creation of a junk bond fund. I expect that enough NBDL players will make it to the NBA to make the fund worthwhile. But to just bet on Fabio and XMAS - suckers bet.

I agree with you from a pro standpoint, but Rak was eligible last season, started at center, and we did make the final 4

But what you're saying is Fab is worth more right now which means he would cost more with little potential to increase his value. Rak isn't worth as much but has the opportunity, albeit small, to increase his value.

the difference b/w a 1 cent and a 2 cent stock may be 100%.

but if the stock goes to $10 - the difference was negligible.
