I just checked out SU’s faceoff and goalie stats on the ncaa site and Varello is ranked 54th in division I FO winning percentage (47.4%) and Madonna is ranked 60th in save percentage (45.5%).

Colgate’s FO guy Collin Orr is ranked 13th in win percentage (59.6%). Against guys who are in the top 25 of that FO% list that he’s faced so far (8), Varello’s only success came against UVA’s Schwenk in their first encounter.

As for Madonna, he's only saved 50% or more of the shots on goal in 3 of the 13 games he's started. I know part of that can be attributed to the defense leaving him to hang out to dry but still…

Maybe Desko can give guys like Nick Martin and Drake Porter some significant playing time against Colgate? I know it’s wishful thinking and probably won’t happen if the score's tight but I'd like to see what Martin can do against a pretty decent FO specialist like Orr for at least a half of a game. Same thing for Porter, Klan, or whoever else they put in cage.

The face off stats need to improve. I think the issue is more about winning the ensuing ground ball than winning the draw.

As for goalie stats: I compared Madonna's stats to the other ACC goalie stats and there are a few things that really stand out. (I was able to get the exact amount of shots faced for each goalie except Duke. They don't keep that stat, so I took the total number of shots faced and subtracted the saves made by the back up goalies in mop-up duty.)

Player / Games Played / Saves / Goals Allowed / Shots Faced / ShotsGame / Save % / Strength of Schedule /Min Played

D. Madonna(SYR) 14 126 149 488 35 .458 2 820:21
D. Fowler(DK) 15 126 109 441 29 .536 16 783:02
A. Rode(UVA) 14 127 128 420 30 .498 7 675:55
A. Bassil(UNC) 8 66 64 214 27 .511 10 348:02
J. Pezzula(UNC) 12 54 69 200 17 .439 10 388:18
M. Schmidt(UND) 14 103 108 370 26 .488 3 788:11

A couple things stand out.
1) He has seen a lot of shots. Opposing teams average 35 shots a game against him. That stat is somewhat skewed by the Albany game where they put 50 total shots up, but that's still a lot of shots.

2) The strength of schedule he played against was very tough. The closest S0S was Matt Schmidt, who played 32 less minutes and faced 118 fewer shots. Note that Schmidt's save pctg is .488, compared to Madonna who has a .458 save pctg with 32 more minutes played and 118 more total shots faced.

Overall, given the situations he has been put in, I think he has played very well during the regular season. Even with the UVA game getting any from him, it never got out of hand, he made some excellent saves and the team was still in a position to win that game. A lot of people jumped on the hate wagon after that game because he only had 5 saves. UVA absolutely destroyed the net, getting a lot of room and time shots that should have been contested. Sure, he probably wants a couple back, and there were a few he probably should have stopped, but there were plenty of other reasons they lost: first time GBs, poor shot selection, poor defense, poor face off performance, etc. People just blamed him because it's easier to blame the goalie.

After his showing today I think it's safe to say he rebounded nicely from that game and hopefully the team has everything squared away, should they be fortunate enough to go dancing tomorrow.

i only got to see three or four games out here in nm. i really like lax, but i am not a student of the game.

nonetheless, i can recognize rationalization. we could have easily won two to three more games if we were even average at face offs and in the net.

worst part of our goaltending was not even the save percentage, but the failure to make the big game turning saves in the second half of the season. only one or two of those in a game would be huge.

that failure was accompanied by letting in an occaisional easy one. not saying the d was great, but the goalie has been subpar.

The fogo issue has not been more about winning more ensuing ground balls as most fogo losses this season have not been about the gb in play but simply snagged or redirected by opposing fogo. Reason why Martin had been relatively effective in his brief showings is that he mucked it up to be a 50-50 scrum for himself and our wings . Few teams will employ that as their main face-off strategy though perhaps we should consider if we face Ierlan or Baptiste in NCAAs. Varello gets constantly critiqued but remember that he also faces a tough schedule. Not many easy matchups to skew the percentages .While his results have varied, he's also had some good games that have helped us win to little mention. He has quick hands and perhaps his winning percentages climb similar to his brother as he gains more experience and strength . Too little seen or known about Phaup, Garlow or incoming recruit Washington but seems clear that Varello will return as our primary. With Delisle graduating, I could see another fogo transferring in to lengthen bench.

Goalies run hot and cold and also have their strengths and weaknesses. Can't look at stats and derive absolutes. All season Madonna has shown a knack for making some spectacular saves around the crease, some which have saved games. Think Powell cited that he has a weak hole on some outside shots but that holds true for any goalie . He did not see the ball well in second Virginia and I question whether it being a outside night game with lighting had something . His passing was good, who will ever forget that beauty to Simmons, though his outlets tended to be more hesitant and shortened with personnel changes. I think he had some of his best saves in clutch moments late in tight games , thought he was a gamer who had a real good season stats be damned .

Ground balls on FO are definitely a problem but I also believe that Varello really needs to improve his upper body strength and stamina. He seems to get pushed around an awful lot and seems to tire in the 4th. Hit the weights and aerobic.

Keep it real about issues.. Wing play has been better than in recent years. Williams created his wins with little help from wings . Ill take our chances whenever the ball is on ground with any fogo and actually in play especially since Dearth has been the ss on wings. Varello will get stronger as will most of our team

i think it's a legitimate concern. the "i'll take our chances whenever " numbers aren't pretty as enumerated above..

i think the speedy jared fernandez was showing promise on the face off ground balls before his injury. had our numbers up.

"I would kind of describe myself as a pest, and kind of ferocious, I guess you could say. Kind of all over the place. Really just trying to do my job on the field and fill in. Just competing out there,'' he said. "I've always been kind of a shorter guy. So for me, just being able to be a little bit more aggressive and getting on people's hands, kind of annoying them, I guess you could say, that's something I like to do on the field. Sometimes people overlook you.'' JF.
