You look at the stats and think wow Purdue dominated.. But then you back and actually watch.. With 7 min to go and SU ahead the stats were about 275 to 250. the Purdue kid had 220 passing.. If told the coaches with 7 min to go he would be sitting on 220 I think they would sign up for that every time.. After that he had 3 long passes and almost 200 yds of offense in 3 drives.. Mixed in were us scoring on D. Duece dropping a pick, us missing another pick and a couple missed sacks. They also made some really nice catches with some pretty good coverage.

All the talk about our WR not beating press coverage is just not true.. we threw 30 passes.. of those at least 7 of them were to wide open players that we missed. Tucker alone was open 3-4 times. We dropped a couple as well. We also had the Alford catch they he just clipped his heel out of bounds. But the key is looking at where we were throwing and who was in the game. Jackson/Cooper probably our 2 best at beating tighter coverages didnt play much at all and when they did they made a few key catches against press. Gadsdon doesnt see much press because he is motion alot of comes out of bunch sets. Alford/Jones saw some tighter coverages but they also run routes against it that are not really designed to get wide open.. even so Alford probably should have had 3 catches and Jones 2. Tucker was the key missing him when pen so much. we turned 20-30 for 300+ into 13/30 for 185.. That wont happen every game where we dont see much pressure.

It was also clear Shrader took off too soon in the first half multiple times.. He missed some throws and missed some reads.. The next 2 last drive of the first half he Tucker on an uncovered swing pass and never even looked at him and based on the coverage that has to be the first read. We ended up with a FG. Thats probably 3-4 TDs lost to wide open passing plays.. Hopefully Shrader is feeling better and they have time to work on the plays that want to run this week.

Blocking from the TEs was horrible most of the game and that caused a few plays to break down.

Even more impressed with the play design after seeing even more plays brake open that we just didnt hit. You can see why Virginia made so many plays last yr when add in WRs that are really good.,

if the TV guys were right about Purdue corners being really good you can see why we moved things around to attack the 3-4th corner and the safeties.

I agree. Also, I agree with Dino, this was a damn good team we beat!

We had opportunities on offense. But I feel like we've talked about missed opportunities so much over rhe years after people break down the film. We need to start cleaning up the little things that will take advantage of those opportunties.

The first 2 games, the O did take advantage of the majority of their opportunities.

This last game, they didn’t.

Purdue had a hand in that.

But also likely the team illness, Shrader’s in particular, contributed largely to those many misses.

Here’s hoping all of that gets resolved during this week, and we come out on Friday nite playing as well or better than we did against Llvll.

Yeah. I saw guys open all game. We need a dual threat te. Imagine if we had the Williams kid in this offense years ago

I think some people believe the offense was iffy during the game because Sean couldn't move the ball. Not his fault, the whole Boiler D was keying on him, so the offense opened up other ways, the sign of an efficient offense.

I missed that there was illness. That can certainly throw things off.

Thank you. Some forget about this part. They think the offense just makes mistakes. They dont think of the defense making the right call, taking away something the offense wanted or defensive players making great plays. Nothing is guaranteed when you run plays.
Agreed. We saw that with the run game for sure. To be fair though, upperdeck was pointing out the spots where the defense gave us something and we just didn't hit it, the underthrow to Tucker for example. Of course if people are sick, that'll throw a bunch of stuff off.

Purdue is a very good team. Thought they executed a good gameplan on both sides of the ball. At the end of the season, this will be one of the better wins the team has.

And we SHOULD have beaten them by 20. Plays were there as OP stated... We just didn't make them.

The good news? A stinker offensively like this in prior years would have been a guaranteed L with D being absolutely gassed by 4th quarter. Both O and D rallied hard in the 4th instead, the fight in this team is remarkable

Good post. You stated many of the same things I saw happening as I watched.

who is Williams?

Imagine if we had Chris Gedney.

Imagine if we had Chris Gedney.

Heck - imagine if we had Sir Beckett of Wales?

In 2012 - he had 35 catches (in 13 games, so just shy of 3/game) for 389 yarfs and 2 TD's.

That said - he was shorter (6'3") and only about 10 lbs heavier than Gadsden.
So OGII as our pass-catching "TE" is on a pace to decimate those #'s.

Don't forget the WVU killer ... Nick Provo.
