Feelings of Hopelessness for this Program amidst the Gaslighting

It's very hard to win when you have two ACC-caliber players (Freeman doesn't count as he hasn't played in weeks).

The portal period will be critical as the team needs almost a complete overhaul.

Always darkest before the dawn. This to shall pass. Other platitudes. Etc.

When Autry gets fired. I whole heartedly hope JAB is nowhere near making the decisions on the new hire. If he is opinion that’s it, nothing more and his opinion means no more than anyone else’s helping with the decision. He burned this program by staying 7 years too long, and he burned this program giving the keys to Autry.

I have no influence on firing the coach, but having watched this team for fifty years, and knowing a well coached team from a poorly coached team(won/loss record not part), I know this team is poorly coached.
My decision is do I want to keep spending money for season tickets. Right now I am leaning for no, still will be a tough call for me. For the first time I no longer enjoy going to the games.

Well, we had our former coach and representative of the Athletic Department come out in a public interview last week and say we don't fire a coach after 2 years at Syracuse and if he's not getting it done, after year 4 there will be discussions.

There's your official somewhere.

I think JB should be at the bottom of the list when it comes to people chosen to decide when it's time for a coach to leave.

I hope you are right on that. I like Hodgson for a number of regional connections and his CV, but we need a national search for due diligence sake after this debacle.

Once that happened, we could not work from a position of strength. It was known that guys could be taken from us. That also meant that we could be leveraged (more or less how it seems to have gone down with Lampkin). It translated into a reputation as not being a serious player in the portal for the top guys.
I feel similar. No top teams lose guys that they're not already prepared to replace. I think this aligns with JAB being against paying players - pretty vociferously - and Red not being comfortable with asking donors for money. They didn't take NIL seriously and weren't prepared. They just expected their players to return.

Now that we are well past the Boeheim family era, at least we do not have to place our hoops hopes in the sons of famous alums anymore...

Some believe Autry was not his first choice. Though he did put him in the next chair.

Do you continue to pour resources into a floundering company?

If you saw one glimmer of hope, sure. If you saw one thing that you could point to and say "look, improvement" or "look, we are really improving in this area". But does anyone really see anything like that?

We just lost to the last-place team in the ACC. But what's worse? That last-place team has as many Top 100 wins this year as Syracuse.

What does that mean? He gives AA a "stern talking to"?
IMO there are 2 options.
1- Fire Autry and bring in someone from the outside
2- Have Autry fire his entire assistant coaching staff and spend high level assistant coach money to bring in innovators who can own the offense and defense respectively

  • Fans that are set on firing Red are just very set on firing Red.
  • Fans that are divided on it [like me] are often met with resistance. We try to put some perspective on it and usually get scathing replies. Being neutral gets "with us or against us" vibes so it's much easier just to withdraw from the discussion. Indeed I'm only commenting to answer your question and am still bracing for somebody to be like "name a worse season then." I can't, I know it's bad.
  • I don't think it's fair to assume the administration is set on Red. We don't really know what they're thinking, and they're certainly not going to tell us. If you fire someone, you just do it, you don't first telegraph it publicly for a large number of reasons.

Money always has a seat at the table.

What does the old money (people who have financed the program for decades) think?

What does the potential new money (Melo and LaLa, etc...) think?

If the big money wanted Red gone, he would be gone already.

There was a moment in the game last night right before the under 8 minute timeout in the 2nd half. Where Petar threw the ball in the stands and it was caught by what I learned in the thread was Torrey Ball. He threw the ball back to the ref and the camera just caught him sitting down and he just looked pissed. Most likely he’s just into the game and was just upset with the play, but if we do by some small chance make a coaching change this off season I’m going to remember that pass.

I don't think Red is the right guy for the job, but if he truly is getting 3 million a year for 5 years my assumption is he will be back no matter what next season.

No, there aren't those types of positive signs.

If we were well coached, playing competitive basketball against good teams, but coming up short due to not having the horses, I think it would be easier to stomach giving extra time for the right personnel to come into the program.

But we're having a historically bad year via many indicators. The product on the court is atrocious. There aren't those positive signs.

kingtidge: do you have info on that and is there a thread that contains the info or was it media?

It's pretty simple to me - this program has been in a steep decline for many years now. The administrators, former coaches, current coaches, etc. have been telling us things are fine. They have lost credibility. The time has come to change direction because the bottom is in. New coach, new direction. It will cost money, but that is just the price to be paid for ignoring it too long.

I think JW's hands were tied during the last JB years. That's not the case anymore and I would imagine he is anxious to move in a new direction as well.

Back to the original point of the post. People come here for a variety of reasons. Some want to vent, some want to gloat, some want to discuss and argue different points. Some mainly want to have a sense of control over a sport that is very much off the rails right now and a SU team that is multiplying how out of control things are.

I come to these threads because for better or worse it's really just SU fans, there are not really many trolls that are here just to dump.

I think everyone here just wants Syracuse to win, they're just are alot of opinions how to get there.

I'm referring more to the general sentiment. It seems there are MANY members of the media who are convinced it can't happen. It also seems that fans are buying that line. It has to coming from somewhere.
Brent Axe is the only one that really questions his future.
It's like the media has been told Year 3 happening is written in stone, no evaluation nothing, already decided months ago.

Also for the record, I appreciate everything did for this program and what it means to Syracuse. What he did up until the last 7 years was remarkable. Little, old Syracuse, NY. In the middle of nowhere and he turned Syracuse into a basketball powerhouse. The last 7 years and turning the program over to Autry is a shame cause it’s going to overshadow his legacy a bit. JAB is a stubborn man and the last few showed it. You have to know when to walk away and he just didn’t. He obviously wanted to coach his kids and he was willing to bring the program down with it, in order to do so
