SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse field hockey team capped off its home regular season slate with a 4-0 victory against Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Sunday's contest marked the final regular season home game for seniors
Lauren Brooks,
Kati Nearhouse, and
Jordan Page.
"I haven't thought about it because it is not over," head coach
Ange Bradley said of her senior class. "I just want to stay present and keep extending the life of the 2014 season as much as we can."
Syracuse (12-4) continued its prowess on the defensive end of the pitch for the second straight game. The Orange has not allowed a goal in the past 140:29 minutes of play. In addition, SU has not yielded a penalty corner in its last two games.
Against Bucknell (10-5), Syracuse tallied two goals in the opening 13 minutes of play and never looked back. On Senior Day, Brooks corralled a pass into the shooting circle from Page. Brooks went top shelf to give the Orange a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Four minutes later, freshman forward
Lies Lagerweij completed the penalty corner set piece, with assists going to Page and freshman midfielder
Lieke Visser.
Following the halftime break, SU hit the gas pedal and scored two goals in the first four minutes of action in the second half. Lagerweij registered her second goal of the contest, off another penalty corner, in the 48th minute. Junior midfielder
Alyssa Manley and Visser were credited with assists on the play. Junior forward
Emma Russell concluded the offensive output for the day, emerging from a scrum in front of net to give Syracuse a 4-0 lead in the 49th minute.
The Syracuse defense had the visiting Bison under wraps for the entirety of the match. Bucknell recorded two shots, both coming within two minutes of each other. Only one shot drew the attention of junior goalkeeper
Jess Jecko, who teamed sophomore goalkeeper
Rebecca Congel for the team's fourth shutout of 2014.
Bucknell junior goalkeeper Shannon Keen was tested throughout the game for the Bison. Keen recorded seven saves on the day for the opposition.
The Syracuse field hockey team will conclude the regular season on Saturday at Massachusetts. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
