I normally enjoy watching ESPN Game Day to begin my college football Saturday but since we blew getting Game Day for the first time ever with the Maryland debacle, it's been hard to watch them celebrating other schools and communities with such enthusiasm. Today was particularly bad because it was all about Penn State: what makes Penn State so special...this is a magical place...the fans here are better than anywhere else. I missed the beginning of it but in the hour and a half I did watch there was no mention of Paterno or Sandusky and the kids for whom Penn State is not a 'magical' place. (And yes, Bernie Fine's or Jim Brown's transgressions would not have been mentioned if Game Day had come here.)
But thinking about it further, if we'd gotten Game Day this year it would have been a fraud. Everyone was talking about how this would tell the country that "Syracuse is back". Well, we aren't 'back', except maybe to 2016. We will deserve Game Day when we prove that we can put together consecutive successful seasons and be a real threat to anyone in the conference. We haven't done that yet. Maybe in 2021. But I don't want Game Day and we wind up 3-9 or 4-8.
With that thought, i'm finally putting Game Day in the rear view mirror. For now.
