Finally job 1 is done

Sure, but Shafer and every other HC know they want and need bigger & faster players at every position. Babers knew that when BGSU was playing Maryland. Shafer made offers and tried to connect with kids in our regions with ideal metrics. The ones he wanted had other offers and did not give us a whiff . So, ultimately he settled with the ones he could persuade to take our offers. The difference is that Babers is getting the attention of a share of those kids with better metrics.

It really goes without saying you want bigger faster players but Shafer is on record many times basically saying he'd take under the radar guys if they were tough hardnosed football players with big hearts.

HCDB is the opposite, to the point that he even pockets scholarships instead of reaching for slow or undersized b-listers.

The Dowels, Ellison's and Hudson's of the world, who are fine players (and not b-listers) so it's not a slight on them but HCDB never would've offered them.

This is the first class in maybe 10 years that we really don't need any of these guys to step up and be a home run hitter . After years of coaching turnover and very frankly poor recruiting in some aspects we don't need these guys to bring their A game right away . They may be able to compete and may in fact be better at some poistions wherec we have current players . The thing is though they don't have to play unless they are head and shoulders better than what we have or we have deep injuries at one position .

This is where our rebound will start , this is where we will be able to start competing for bowl games every year. We simply let our young guys play when there ready not when they are needed.

Job one to bouncing back is putting bodies on the field that are ready to play . I think this class accomplishes that . Some good young talent who can build there body and minds before they have to step on the field .

Well done
Job one (and won) will be done when we start winning some damn football games! ;)

I haven't noticed that HCDB pockets scholarships. When he had roster issues, he has used several to hit the juco market or to take grad transfers. It was an effort to get immediate help. Shafer did not do much of that in 2014 or 2015.

Under Shafer, SU rolled out 200 scholarship offers every cycle, starting with the guys who had the metrics every coach would want. And, as it turned out, taking some of those big heart/shorter players was the best option he had after the others did not want to come here.

I agree, of course, that Dino wants rangier players, stouter players -- and the point is that he is able to close the deal with more of these. Some exceptions -- Riley, keeping Moe Neal in the fold (Shafer recruit, but part of Dino's 2016 class), Nykeim Johnson -- but you can see that Dino is adding stout linebackers and taller DBs. Next cycle he needs to land some of the big DTs who turned us down this round.

He has, and that is why we have landed a few after spring practices. I am all in for this. Don't get who you are after, hold on and offer someone similar or a position of need. No worries if the full allotment of scholarships are not offered after signing day(s) in my opinion.

The largest red flags we had were most of the highest rated kids had troubles getting eligibility. Whether it was grades, medical or legal. So many never made it or lasted to see the field. It seems different now.

There were still those issues this year, the difference being that for various reasons they were not allowed to sign. Having identified those issues prior to signing day allowed the staff to find replacements.

They were not allowed to sign...because if they don't qualify...a new rule affects your 85 scholie count. Most teams are not signing risky kids now.

Expect this to continue...look at the Detroit kid (the AA 4 star Center) who got in trouble...no one has signed him until he clears up his issues.

That’s what I was saying. This staff was able to find other options rather than to be stuck with lost scholarships of players that might not have made it to campus.

Yup...I predict Sampson ends up going to that shady JUCO in Mississippi. In the past we might have signed him and hope he clears up his issues by Summer Camp. I have no idea how much trouble he is in...but he could be a "pennies from heaven" late add for a school this summer if he squares away things.
