Five CNY high schools will no longer schedule CBA

CBA most certainly recruits. They plucked a couple of solid hoops players out of the Syracuse City District when my son was in eighth grade. One of the players was going into ninth but reclassed back to eight at CBA. Believe me, he didn’t need to. He was already a stud. But that’s another great use of the private school system.

I admit I skimmed the article quickly, but that letter ignores the recruiting piece entirely. Can’t have a real discussion about the situation without acknowledging that fact IMO. Is CBA recruiting? I don't know. If they are, that can’t be ignored even if they had a few down years like the letter mentioned. They haven’t lost a game in 3 years and only 1 game in the last 4 years. Seems like a red flag to me that they might have a competitive advantage.

School size is largely irrelevant if you can recruit. Doesn’t guarantee success every year, but it’s a huge advantage.

You mentioning DC brought me down memory lane. Years ago, 4 time State Champion Jamesville Dewitt with Coleman/Cavanaugh came down to DeMatha and I watched the Stags absolutely wipe the floor with them. Wasn’t a close game out of the gate. DeMatha is a much smaller school than JD. That exemplified to me the difference between private and public. For as good as JD was, they aren’t touching a private school like DeMatha on their best day that makes a concerted effort to recruit kids.

I’ll be interested to find out more about this as I have family that works in the Liverpool school district I’ll be visiting this Easter weekend.
Some irony in that those JD teams had some funny business on their end with transfers. I remember one season, I think Triche's senior year, JD conveniently got Corcoran's best player as a transfer.

Part of the issue is on NYS.

They will not let anyone re-class once they are a freshman in high school.

An easy way around this? Go to a private school that does not have to follow the same guidelines.

CBA is 100% recruiting. They are a private school. They can choose who to give "scholarships" for or who they do not want to. They can decide how many scholarships they want or dont want.

Because of this, they will ALWAYS have a significant advantage over the public schools.

Demetrius Mitchell lol... Dajuan was a Fowler kid and played varsity as an 8th grader at Fowler. I don't want to blow up their whole spot but there was a wealthy family who had a kid on the team in that 09-12 era that allowed kids from other districts to live in the apartment complex they owned to technically be in the JD school district.

I was thinking of Stevie Thompson lol, so it was more players than I remembered.

Oh yes. Was talking to a buddy and he remembers Alshwan & Mickey Davis being Corcoran kids, too
That ‘04 team I think was a truly homegrown enterprise. I’m not a CNY lore expert but I went to every NYS final four growing up and would spend weeks researching the teams. The ‘04 team was one of the best team performances I ever saw among all the years I went. They had talent like Rautins but he was pretty raw. They didn’t really have any spectacular athletes aside from Shavers but he wasn’t the main focal point.

I only picked up on the transfer thing when every year JD made it there were always players that weren’t on the previous team’s roster.

That's so funny. We have a big group that went to Glens Falls every year as well. What an awesome time and cool basketball town for that weekend. A real shame money rules all.

It's very sad. Not just the money but the landscape. I went to Binghamton in 2019 and it was terrible. Glens Falls just has the charm, and it's right in the city so everything is walkable. When it returned to the Falls 4 years ago I went back down with a group of friends in 2023 and the basketball quality was shockingly bad. All the best players were in prep school. The bars/experience was still great and 2024 was a bit better quality wise, but then we just decided to put it on pause especially with it back in Binghamton.

Some really awesome memories watching the final four. Mount Vernon, Amityville, Peekskill, Niagara Falls, just some insane talent played there.
