Why does the season as a whole feel like an extension of our game trends?

Start out looking ok (say get an early stop and some points) but stumble shortly after and start looking awful. Head into the midway point/halftime in a subpar manner, and as we head into the second half of the year/game we finally start putting things together...only to fall short in the end.
