Florida State 2-10

One of 1st rules I learned playing sports……… don’t disrespect your opponent. Win with grace. If you are truly a competitor and you lose a game, especially a high profile, long rivalry type game, and the visiting winners plant a flag in the middle of the field………you’re begging for a punch in the face.

Meh, I really don't care about the flag planting or the "brawls" that ensued. It's dumb rivalry stuff.

If this happened back in the 60s people would wax nostalgic about it, have a good laugh, and then call today's players entitled pansies.

But now it must be stopped! Think of the children!

Really? You don't think Dick Butkus would have kicked the living s$$t out of somebody that did that? I respectfully disagree with your 60's comment.

I’m saying that IF Dick Butkus did that it would now be considered part of his legend. And that people today would be laughing about that time Butkus punched a guy for trying to plant a flag.

But today it’s PROBLEM that must be ADDRESSED with severe FINES.

People like to crow about how soft todays players are, but when they fight it’s the freaking end of the world.

Apples and Oranges, imo.
Acting like an ahole and rubbing an opponents face in it after you beat them, has nothing to do with toughness or being soft- its about being a dbag, period.
And, it also elicits a viceral reaction that's unpredictable. Imagine a scenario where fans get involved and it becomes even more dangerous. The cops were using pepper spray, ffs. That's not harmless "kids will be kids" isht, it's a totally unnecessary escalation just for the sake of being an idiot. JMHO

You know what else used to happen in the 60s? Firemen turning fire hoses on peaceful civil rights protesters. You good with that too?

“It would have been OK in the 60s” is quite possibly the worst defense you could have come up with.

Can't plant the flag if it's artificial turf

Man, does everyone miss points around here?

I'll be clearer since my rhetorical flourish was lost... I was commenting on how hypocritical people are about their reaction to fights.

Talk about a fight from 'back in the day' and it's all chuckles and grins. "Oh that time Bird clotheslined Rambis, what a tough SOB, that's when basketball was a man's game!"

Talk about a fight that happened yesterday and it's pearl clutching about the decline of western civilization. "Those guys shoved each other over a flag, there should be million dollar fines and jail time!"

To your point -- read this a long time ago...the anecdotes in there are pretty funny and absurd. Guys biting each other, poking in the eyes. Just normal trench behavior. The fights stand out now because they happen after the game is over and everything is normally so monitored.

Yup. I used to listen to Mike & Mike in the morning, and Golic would talk about guys grabbing nuts in the pile, fights in the locker room, etc. It was always played for comedy.

"The Seminoles’ nosedive from 13-1 and the brink of the College Football Playoff to 2-10 is the second-largest drop in wins ever. Only 2011-12 Southern Miss (which cratered from 12-2 in 2011 to 0-12 after a coaching change) was worse. Florida State joined 1954 Illinois and 1956 Notre Dame and Maryland as the lone teams to begin the season ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll and fail to win at least three games."

Boo and also Hoo;

"The complications from those classes — Norvell’s first two — lay deeper than mediocre rankings of 22nd and 23rd in the 247Sports Composite. Some of the early recruiting misses at the root of the problem stem from unfortunate circumstances: Norvell was FSU’s third coach in four seasons and inherited a program that was 18-20 over the previous three years. The pandemic hit three months into his tenure; COVID-19 restrictions hamstrung his staff’s ability to build relationships in a new state. And as the Seminoles rebuilt slowly through Norvell’s first two losing seasons, they couldn’t sell new-coach buzz, like Florida’s Billy Napier and Miami’s Mario Cristobal.

Those two classes were responsible for only seven regular starters this season. Of the 15 blue-chip (four- or five-star) prospects FSU signed those cycles, just five were still on the roster.

The misses created a void on the field and, crucially, in the locker room. Inevitable attrition meant Florida State needed new alphas after Travis, Jared Verse, Braden Fiske and Trey Benson headed to the NFL. But FSU’s roster had only 28 scholarship players who were on the team for at least three seasons.

“There was no one to pass that torch to,” said a source involved with the team’s roster management."

Some great "stats" for an "esteemed team that carries its conference.". From the outside it looks like Alford should return every penny he has been paid to date, treble it, and walk away or be charged with fraud. Norvell should be fired and let him collect his buyout from a broke AD (broke, not a billion dollars in debt, they aren't Rutgers!).

More:

"And when the Seminoles could finally sell major success last cycle after back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins, they still underachieved. Months after finishing sixth in the final AP poll, Florida State had to cancel a junior day; coaches couldn’t get enough people to campus.

Florida State was among four teams that won at least 23 games in 2022-23 and didn’t change coaches last recruiting cycle. The other three programs’ 2024 classes finished first (Georgia), third (Oregon) and fifth (Ohio State) in the 247Sports Composite.

FSU was 12th." :confused::(

We were the only team to lose to Illinois in 1954. We beat Maryland in 1956. And Notre Dame's Paul Hornung somehow won the Heisman Trophy over Jim Brown, (and several other more deserving candidates), despite being a QB for a 2-8 team with 3TD passes and 13 interceptions.

You’re full of crap; that WAS NOT what you were commenting on. You want to say people are hypocritical? I totally agree. I’ve stated on this board that the average person is a moron with the memory of a housefly - I have no issue adding hypocrite to that.

What you actually said was that you personally don’t care about fights. Which is what I responded to, because it’s an idiotic position.

Did they vote for the Heisman before the season?

Agreed on Alford. The first rots from the head.

W/L shouldn't be the only metric you look at when deciding to spend 10s of millions of dollars.

I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but even as a casual fan it was obvious that a lot of their success in '23 was transient. Too much came down to one or two plays by JT.

Funny your talking about Butkus... as I was watching Magnum PI 80s reruns when I grew up only a day ago...
