Welcome to Crab Stuffed Flounder Day!

Wow, talk about your specific food holidays! Just for the record, there is no National Crab Day (though I bet there may be one in Maryland; anyone know of any such days there?). There is also no National Flounder Day. Yet, you put these two seafood creatures together–more aptly, stuff one with the meat of another–and you have February 18’s delicious day.

And while it’s a relatively well-known way to serve flounder–or a lot of other white meat fishes like tilapia or cod–it’s not so easy to find this particular dish on a New York City menu, let alone the “best” of the crop! Still, I found a restaurant–because there’s always some place in New York that’ll serve you what you need, no matter what it is!–that makes a mean crab-stuffed flounder. The Ponty Bistro in the heart of Gramercy makes such a dish: baked instead of pan-fried, the flounder stays evenly cooked while the crab stuffing is warm yet crisp. The restaurant itself is gorgeously cozy, with a menu that will rival its more famous (and more swanky) neighbors. Definitely worth a look-see, if you’re going to be celebrating this very odd and specific food day :)

UL Bullies Syracuse Inside in Ugly Loss (TNIAAM; Gilberg)

Heading into Wednesday night's matchup, Syracuse had won eight of its past nine games and looked like one of the hottest teams in the country, while Louisville had lost two of their past three since announcing their self-imposed postseason ban as a result of an alleged recruiting scandal. However, the roles appeared to be reversed during Syracuse's crushing 72-58 defeat, as it was the Orange who looked like the team with nothing to play for, getting outscored 50-20 in the paint.

Despite looking lost offensively during last year's meeting, losing 69-59, Louisville had no trouble this time around against Syracuse's 2-3 zone, easily using their decisive size advantage to work their way inside. In addition to their 30-point edge in the paint, the Cardinals also dominated the Orange on the glass, out-rebounding Syracuse 41-30.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim told reporters after the game that it was the disparity in rebounds which led to Louisville's decisive edge in the paint.

"A lot of offensive rebounds, our interior defense isn't great," Boeheim said. "We forced them to take a little bit tougher shots in the first half, and they missed that in-between shot. In the second half they really still missed it, but they got it back and that was probably the difference."

Pitino: Onuaku Only Scratching Surface (courier-journal.com; Greer)

Back-to-back losses have a way of bringing up some uncomfortable subjects for basketball teams, especially when they happen in the days after a school announces a self-imposed postseason ban amid an NCAA investigation.

For Louisville, two second-half stumbles, one at Duke and one at Notre Dame, prompted questions about how much the hard reality of having no ACC or NCAA tournaments to play for was weighing on the 2015-16 Cards.

In a 72-58 thumping of Syracuse on Wednesday night, U of L (20-6, 9-4 ACC) snapped out of its funk and fought back against the growing narrative that the self-imposed sanctions had sullied their motivation.

No one loomed larger in Louisville's bounce-back win than 6-foot-10 sophomore Chinanu Onuaku, who recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds, and he added four assists for good measure.

It was his best game since the North Carolina win a little more than two weeks ago. It was the kind of performance that reminded everyone just how good Onuaku can be.

Ludden's Mika Adams-Woods Scrambles for a Loose Ball with WG's Malik Zachery

Ludden Nips West Genny in Wild Battle Featuring Two D1 Prospects (PS; Webb)

Mika Adams-Woods called it a statement game.

The Bishop Ludden High School boys basketball team can best call it, survival.

The Gaelic Knights spent the final minute of their Section III Class AA quarterfinal opener on the ropes, ready for West Genesee to deliver the final, brutal knockout blow. The Wildcats attempted one swing after another after another. But the big one just never connected. And when Jack Bova's 3-pointer at the buzzer banged off the rim, Ludden had finally survived.

Final score - Bishop Ludden 51, West Genesee 50.

The Gaelic Knights advance to play Henninger in the semifinals on Saturday at Onondaga Community College. West Genesee ends its season 13-8.

"Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, I guess," said Ludden coach Pat Donnelly. "Both teams had so many chances. To our credit, we never gave that lead up. We survive and advance."

Adams-Woods finished with 25 points including a nearly three-quarters court shot at the end of the third quarter. But Adams-Woods did not score in the fourth quarter. In fact, he spent the final 9.5 seconds on the bench after drawing a technical foul (and fouling out of the game). Bova made both technical free throws to draw West Genesee within 51-50.
