Welcome to International Women's Day!

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year.[2]In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation, and love towards woration for women's economic, political, and social achievements. Started as a Socialistpolitical event, the holiday blended the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, especially those in the Soviet Bloc.[3] In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for people to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Dayand Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. Some people celebrate the day by wearing purple ribbons.

Magic in Manhattan: An Oral History (DO; Schneidman)

Tim McNamara stayed at his brother’s apartment the week before the 2006 Big East tournament, accompanying a deflated senior whose college career approached a painful end with each debilitating ache. A stress fracture in Gerry McNamara’s pelvic bone had lingered for more than half the regular season. He struggled to put his shoes on, braced himself to cough or sneeze and lied on the floor just to put socks on.

To add insult to injury, the Orange was ravaged by a combined 64 points in three consecutive losses to end the regular season, including a 39-point loss to DePaul that still stands as the worst defeat in Jim Boeheim’s 40 years as head coach.

Heading into Madison Square Garden as the No. 9 seed, Syracuse’s NCAA Tournament hopes were grim.

“If you look back and look at some of the games that led up to the tournament, we were not in games,” McNamara said. “We were not competitive in those games.”

But what transpired over the next four days wasn’t just history — the Orange became the first team to win the tournament with four wins in four days — but it transcended one player’s physical limits as he captivated a sport and city in the process. Ten years later, those that went along for the ride relived the magical run.

CHAPTER 1: THE FLOATER

Syracuse drew eighth-seeded Cincinnati on Wednesday, March 8, and the loser was all but eliminated from NCAA Tournament contention. The Orange trailed 73-71 with 6.2 seconds left when McNamara caught an inbounds pass 70 feet from the basket. Cincinnati’s Cedric McGowan rode McNamara to half court before McNamara went behind the back, split two defenders and lofted a running floater near the 3-point arc.

Poor Shooting Could be Culprit if Pitt Doesn't Receive NCAA Tournament Bid (triblive.com; DiPaola)

Before boarding a bus Monday for the trip to Washington and the ACC Tournament, Pitt forward Sheldon Jeter wasn't shy revealing what he and his teammates think about their NCAA chances.

“Our attitude for these last two games was we have to win (both) to get in the tournament,” he said.

But didn't Pitt lose those games? OK, what happens now?

“We know to get into the tournament, we have to make a deep run in this ACC Tournament,” he said.

That's asking a lot, but Jeter knows the NCAA window is closing. It could slam shut on the Panthers (20-10) and their cold-shooting hands if they can't defeat Syracuse (19-12) in their first tournament game at noon Wednesday at Verizon Center.

Jeter also referenced the three letters no Pitt fan wants to hear.

“If we don't (make a deep run), in our minds, we'll probably be in the NIT again,” he said. “I don't know how the selection committee will look at it, but that's at least what we're thinking.”

Destiny USA Proposes Building Smaller Hotel Across From Mall (PS; Moriarty)

Destiny USA is again proposing to build a hotel across the street from its giant Syracuse shopping mall, but its newest plans call for a smaller, less costly hotel than the one it designed two years ago.

The mall development company founded by Robert Congel as an offshoot of his Syracuse-based Pyramid Cos. is proposing to build a $48 million, 209-room hotel at the southeast corner of Hiawatha Boulevard and Solar streets.

In 2014, Destiny proposed a $75 million, 255-room hotel on the same site. However, it put the plans on hold in 2015 without explanation.

The size of the proposed hotel is not all that has shrunk. Two years ago, Destiny applied to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency for a 20-year property tax exemption that city officials said would be worth approximately $20 million.

This time, the company is asking the agency for a 12-year deal worth $6.84 million. The building, though not the land under it, would be exempt from property taxes for the first eight years. For the next four years, the exemption would be phased out by 20 percent a year. After that, the hotel would be fully taxable.

Syracuse will have its back against the wall vs. Pitt

Both of these teams went 9-9 in ACC play during the regular season and they'll play for a third time Wednesday at the ACC Tournament in Washington D.C.

The Panthers beat the Orange twice already this season which makes Wednesday's game incredibly important for Jim Boeheim's squad if it wants to be assured of reaching theNCAA Tournament.

Syracuse (19-12) has a neutral site win over Texas A&M on its resume as well as a road triumph over Duke, but a loss against Pitt would make for a couple of uneasy days in upstate New York leading up to Selection Sunday considering this team's overall body of work.

Another thing to keep in mind: no team in college basketball has been as effective against the Orange's 2-3 zone as the Panthers under Jamie Dixon.
